It is possible for a native backlight driver to load while
acpi_video_register is running, which may lead to
acpi_video_unregister_backlight being called while acpi_video_register
is running and the 2 racing against eachother.
The register_count variable protects against this, but not in a thread
safe manner, this commit adds locking to make this thread safe.

When builtin there is no guarantee in which order module_init functions
are run, so acpi_video_register() may get called from the i915 driver
(if it is also builtin) before acpi_video_init() gets called, resulting
in the dmi quirks not yet being parsed.
This commit moves the dmi_check_system() call to acpi_video_register(),
so that we can be sure the dmi quirks have always been applied before
probing.

Move the unregistering of the acpi backlight interface on registering of a

it needlessly complicates the code.

Make acpi_video_set_dmi_backlight_type() call
acpi_video_unregister_backlight() when the new dmi quirk results in
the desired backlight interface being of a type other then
acpi_backlight_video.
This avoid the need for the second if in the following construction
which is currently found in many platform/x86 drivers:
if (prefer_vendor_quirk)
acpi_video_dmi_promote_vendor();
if (!acpi_video_backlight_support())
acpi_video_unregister_backlight()
This second if-block will be removed from the platform drivers as part
of their conversion to the new backlight interface selection API.

Currently we have 2 kernel commandline options + dmi-quirks in 3 places all
interacting (in interesting ways) to select which which backlight interface
to use. On the commandline we've acpi_backlight=[video|vendor] and
video.use_native_backlight=[0|1]. DMI quirks we have in
acpi/video-detect.c, acpi/video.c and drivers/platform/x86/*.c .
This commit is the first step to cleaning this up, replacing the 2 cmdline
options with just acpi_backlight=[video|vendor|native|none], and adds a
new API to video_detect.c to reflect this.
Follow up commits will also move other related code, like unregistering the
acpi_video backlight interface if it was registered before other drivers
which take priority over it are loaded, to video_detect.c where this
logic really belongs.

This is a preparation patch for the backlight interface selection logic
cleanup, there are 2 reasons to not always build the video_detect code
into the kernel:
1) In order for the video_detect.c to also deal with / select native
backlight interfaces on win8 systems, instead of doing this in video.c
where it does not belong, video_detect.c needs to call into the backlight
class code. Which cannot be done if it is builtin and the blacklight class
is not.
2) Currently all the platform/x86 drivers which have quirks to prefer
the vendor driver over acpi-video call acpi_video_unregister_backlight()
to remove the acpi-video backlight interface, this logic really belongs
in video_detect.c, which will cause video_detect.c to depend on symbols of
video.c and video.c already depends on video_detect.c symbols, so they
really need to be a single module.
Note that this commits make 2 changes so as to maintain 100% kernel
commandline compatibility:
1) The __setup call for the acpi_backlight= handling is moved to
acpi/util.c as __setup may only be used by code which is alwasy builtin
2) video.c is renamed to acpi_video.c so that it can be combined with
video_detect.c into video.ko
This commit also makes changes to drivers/platform/x86/Kconfig to ensure
that drivers which use acpi_video_backlight_support() from video_detect.c,
will not be built-in when acpi_video is not built in. This also changes
some "select" uses to "depends on" to avoid dependency loops.

Commit b9a5e5e18f "ACPI / init: Fix the ordering of
acpi_reserve_resources()" overlooked the fact that the memory
and/or I/O regions reserved by acpi_reserve_resources() may
conflict with those reserved by the PNP "system" driver.
If that conflict actually takes place, it causes the reservations
made by the "system" driver to fail while before commit b9a5e5e18f
all reservations made by it and by acpi_reserve_resources() would be
successful. In turn, that allows the resources that haven't been
reserved by the "system" driver to be used by others (e.g. PCI) which
sometimes leads to functional problems (up to and including boot
failures).
To fix that issue, introduce a common resource reservation routine,
acpi_reserve_region(), to be used by both acpi_reserve_resources()
and the "system" driver, that will track all resources reserved by
it and avoid making conflicting requests.

This patch implements support for ACPI _CCA object, which is introduced in
ACPIv5.1, can be used for specifying device DMA coherency attribute.
The parsing logic traverses device namespace to parse coherency
information, and stores it in acpi_device_flags. Then uses it to call
arch_setup_dma_ops() when creating each device enumerated in DSDT
during ACPI scan.
This patch also introduces acpi_dma_is_coherent(), which provides
an interface for device drivers to check the coherency information
similarly to the of_dma_is_coherent().

When the QR_EC transaction fails, the EC_FLAGS_QUERY_PENDING flag prevents
the event handling work queue from being scheduled again.
Though there shouldn't be failed QR_EC transactions, and this gap was
efficiently used for catching and learning the SCI_EVT clearing timing
compliance issues, we need to fix this as we are not fully compatible
with all platforms/Windows to handle SCI_EVT clearing timing correctly.
Fixing this gives the EC driver the chances to recover from a state machine
failure.
So this patch fixes this issue. When nr_pending_queries drops to 0, it
clears EC_FLAGS_QUERY_PENDING at the proper position for different modes in
order to ensure that the SCI_EVT handling can proceed.
In order to be clearer for future ec_event_clearing modes, all checks in
this patch are written in the inclusive style, not the exclusive style.

It is reported that on several platforms, EC firmware will not respond
non-expected QR_EC (see EC_FLAGS_QUERY_HANDSHAKE, only write QR_EC when
SCI_EVT is set).
Unfortunately, ACPI specification doesn't define when the SCI_EVT should be
cleared by the firmware, thus the original implementation queued up second
QR_EC right after writing QR_EC command and before reading the returned
event value as at that time the SCI_EVT is ensured not cleared. This
behavior is also based on the assumption that the firmware should be able
to return 0x00 to indicate "no outstanding event". This behavior did fix
issues on Samsung platforms where the spurious query value of 0x00 is
supported and didn't break platforms in my test queue.
But recently, specific Acer, Asus, Lenovo platforms keep on blaming this
change.
This patch changes the behavior to re-check the SCI_EVT a bit later and
removes EC_FLAGS_QUERY_HANDSHAKE quirks, hoping this is the Windows
compliant EC driver behavior.
In order to be robust to the possible regressions, instead of removing the
quirk directly, this patch keeps the quirk code, removes the quirk users
and keeps old behavior for Samsung platforms.

We've been suffering from the uncertainty of the SCI_EVT clearing timing.
This patch implements 3 of 4 possible modes to handle SCI_EVT clearing
variations. The old behavior is kept in this patch.
Status: QR_EC is re-checked as early as possible after checking previous
SCI_EVT. This always leads to 2 QR_EC transactions per SCI_EVT
indication and the target may implement event queue which returns
0x00 indicating "no outstanding event".
This is proven to be a conflict against Windows behavior, but is
still kept in this patch to make the EC driver robust to the
possible regressions that may occur on Samsung platforms.
Query: QR_EC is re-checked after the target has handled the QR_EC query
request command pushed by the host.
Event: QR_EC is re-checked after the target has noticed the query event
response data pulled by the host.
This timing is not determined by any IRQs, so we may need to use a
guard period in this mode, which may explain the existence of the
ec_guard() code used by the old EC driver where the re-check timing
is implemented in the similar way as this mode.
Method: QR_EC is re-checked as late as possible after completing the _Qxx
evaluation. The target may implement SCI_EVT like a level triggered
interrupt.
It is proven on kernel bugzilla 94411 that, Windows will have all
_Qxx evaluations parallelized. Thus unless required by further
evidences, we needn't implement this mode as it is a conflict of
the _Qxx parallelism requirement.
Note that, according to the reports, there are platforms that cannot be
handled using the "Status" mode without enabling the
EC_FLAGS_QUERY_HANDSHAKE quirk. But they can be handled with the other
modes according to the tests (kernel bugzilla 97381).
The following log entry can be used to confirm the differences of the 3
modes as it should appear at the different positions for the 3 modes:
Command(QR_EC) unblocked
Status: appearing after
EC_SC(W) = 0x84
Query: appearing after
EC_DATA(R) = 0xXX
where XX is the event number used to determine _QXX
Event: appearing after first
EC_SC(R) = 0xX0 SCI_EVT=x BURST=0 CMD=0 IBF=0 OBF=0
that is next to the following log entry:
Command(QR_EC) completed by hardware

During the period that a work queue is scheduled (queued up for run) but
hasn't been run, second schedule_work() could fail. This may not lead to
the loss of queries because QR_EC is always ensured to be submitted after
the work queue has been in the running state.
The event handling work queue can be changed into the loop style to allow
us to control the code in a more flexible way:
1. Makes it possible to add event=0x00 termination condition in the loop.
2. Increases the thoughput of the QR_EC transactions as the 2nd+ QR_EC
transactions may be handled in the same work item used for the 1st QR_EC
transaction, thus the delay caused by the 2nd+ work item scheduling can
be eliminated.
Except the logging message changes and the throughput improvement, this
patch is just a funcitonal no-op.

This commit allows these systems to work by going through all the usual

interface.
This commit also adds a quirk enabling this parameter on Toshiba Portege
R830 systems which are known to be affected by this.

Commit 73f7d1ca32 "ACPI / init: Run acpi_early_init() before
timekeeping_init()" moved the ACPI subsystem initialization,
including the ACPI mode enabling, to an earlier point in the
initialization sequence, to allow the timekeeping subsystem
use ACPI early. Unfortunately, that resulted in boot regressions
on some systems and the early ACPI initialization was moved toward
its original position in the kernel initialization code by commit
c4e1acbb35 "ACPI / init: Invoke early ACPI initialization later".
However, that turns out to be insufficient, as boot is still broken
on the Tyan S8812 mainboard.
To fix that issue, split the ACPI early initialization code into
two pieces so the majority of it still located in acpi_early_init()
and the part switching over the platform into the ACPI mode goes into
a new function, acpi_subsystem_init(), executed at the original early
ACPI initialization spot.
That fixes the Tyan S8812 boot problem, but still allows ACPI
tables to be loaded earlier which is useful to the EFI code in
efi_enter_virtual_mode().

The PCIe specification, rev 3.0, section 2.2.8.1, contains the following
implementation note:
Virtual Wire Mapping for INTx Interrupts From ARI Devices
The implied Device Number for an ARI Device is 0. When ARI-aware
software (including BIOS and operating system) enables ARI Forwarding in
the Downstream Port immediately above an ARI Device in order to access
its Extended Functions, software must comprehend that the Downstream Port
will use Device Number 0 for the virtual wire mappings of INTx interrupts
coming from all Functions of the ARI Device. If non-ARI-aware software
attempts to determine the virtual wire mappings for Extended Functions,
it can come up with incorrect mappings by examining the traditional
Device Number field and finding it to be non-0.
We account for this in pci_swizzle_interrupt_pin(), but it looks like we
miss it here, looking for a _PRT entry with a slot matching the ARI device

According to Section 7.2 of ACPI 6.0, power resources should
always be enabled and disabled in order given by the "resourceorder"
field of the corresponding Power Resource objects: "Power Resource
levels are enabled from low values to high values and are disabled
from high values to low values."
However, this is not what happens during system resume, because
in that case the enabling/disabling is carried out in the power
resource registration order which may not reflect the ordering
required by the platform.
For this reason, make the ordering of the global list of all
power resources in the system (used by the system resume code)
reflect the one given by the "resourceorder" attributes of the
Power Resource objects in the ACPI namespace and modify
acpi_resume_power_resources() to walk the list in the reverse
order when turning off the power resources that had been off
before the system was suspended.

The ACPI 6 specification has made some changes in the device power
management area. In particular:
* The D3hot power state is now supposed to be always available
(instead of D3cold) and D3cold is only regarded as valid if the
_PR3 object is present for the given device.
* The required ordering of transitions into power states deeper than
D0 is now such that for a transition into state Dx the _PSx method
is supposed to be executed first, if present, and the states of
the power resources the device depends on are supposed to be
changed after that.
* It is now explicitly forbidden to transition devices from
lower-power (deeper) into higher-power (shallower) power states
other than D0.
Those changes have been made so the specification reflects the
Windows' device power management code that the vast majority of
systems using ACPI is validated against.
To avoid artificial differences in ACPI device power management
between Windows and Linux, modify the ACPI device power management
code to follow the new specification. Add comments explaining the
code flow in some unclear places.
This only may affect some real corner cases in which the OS behavior
expected by the firmware is different from the Windows one, but that's
quite unlikely. The transition ordering change affects transitions
to D1 and D2 which are rarely used (if at all) and into D3hot and
D3cold for devices actually having _PR3, but those are likely to
be validated against Windows anyway. The other changes may affect
code calling acpi_device_get_power() or acpi_device_update_power()
where ACPI_STATE_D3_HOT may be returned instead of ACPI_STATE_D3_COLD
(that's why the ACPI fan driver needs to be updated too) and since
transitions into ACPI_STATE_D3_HOT may remove power now, it is better
to avoid this one in acpi_pm_device_sleep_state() if the "no power
off" PM QoS flag is set.
The only existing user of acpi_device_can_poweroff() really cares
about the case when _PR3 is present, so the change in that function
should not cause any problems to happen too.
A plus is that PCI_D3hot can be mapped to ACPI_STATE_D3_HOT
now and the compatibility with older systems should be covered
automatically.
In any case, if any real problems result from this, it still will
be better to follow the Windows' behavior (which now is reflected
by the specification too) in general and handle the cases when it
doesn't work via quirks.

validate ECDT for Clevo laptops:
Commit: 777cb38295
Subject: ACPI / EC: Add msi quirk for Clevo W350etq
All udelay()/msleep() quirks for MSI/Quanta/Clevo seem to be the wrong
fixes generated without fixing the EC driver race issues.
And even if it is not wrong, the guarding can be covered by the following
commits in wait polling mode:
Commit: 9e295ac14d
Subject: ACPI / EC: Reduce ec_poll() by referencing the last register access timestamp.
Commit: commit in the same series
Subject: ACPI / EC: Fix and clean up register access guarding logics.
The only case that is not covered is the inter-transaction guarding. And
there is no evidence that we need the inter-transaction guarding upon
reading the noted bug entries.
So it is time to remove the quirks and let the users to try again. If there
is a regression, the only thing we need to do is to restore the
inter-transaction guarding for the reported platforms.

We have 2 polling modes in the EC driver:
1. busy polling: originally used for the MSI quirks. udelay() is used to
perform register access guarding.
2. wait polling: normal code path uses wait_event_timeout() and it can be
woken up as soon as the transaction is completed in the interrupt mode.
It also contains the register acces guarding logic in case the interrupt
doesn't arrive and the EC driver is about to advance the transaction in
task context (the polling mode).
The wait polling is useful for interrupt mode to allow other tasks to use
the CPU during the wait.
But for the polling mode, the busy polling takes less time than the wait
polling, because if no interrupt arrives, the wait polling has to wait the
minimal HZ interval.
We have a new use case for using the busy polling mode. Some GPIO drivers
initialize PIN configuration which cause a GPIO multiplexed EC GPE to be
disabled out of the GPE register's control. Busy polling mode is useful
here as it takes less time than the wait polling. But the guarding logic
prevents it from responding even faster. We should spinning around the EC
status rather than spinning around the nop execution lasted a determined
period.
This patch introduces 2 module params for the polling mode switch and the
guard time, so that users can use the busy polling mode without the
guarding in case the guarding is not necessary. This is an example to use
the 2 module params for this purpose:
acpi.ec_busy_polling acpi.ec_polling_guard=0
We've tested the patch on a test platform. The platform suffers from such
kind of the GPIO PIN issue. The GPIO driver resets all PIN configuration
and after that, EC interrupt cannot arrive because of the multiplexing.
Then the platform suffers from a long delay carried out by the
wait_event_timeout() as all further EC transactions will run in the polling
mode. We switched the EC driver to use the busy polling mechanism instead
of the wait timeout polling mechanism and the delay is still high:

[ 44.417548] call PNP0C0B:00+ returned 0 after 131323 usecs
And this patch can significantly reduce the delay:

In the polling mode, EC driver shouldn't access the EC registers too
frequently. Though this statement is concluded from the non-root caused
bugs (see links below), we've maintained the register access guarding
logics in the current EC driver. The guarding logics can be found here and
there, makes it hard to root cause real timing issues. This patch collects
the guarding logics into one single function so that all hidden logics
related to this can be seen clearly.
The current guarding related code also has several issues:
1. Per-transaction timestamp prevents inter-transaction guarding from being
implemented in the same place. We have an inter-transaction udelay() in
acpi_ec_transaction_unblocked(), this logic can be merged into ec_poll()
if we can use per-device timestamp. This patch completes such merge to
form a new ec_guard() function and collects all guarding related hidden
logics in it.
One hidden logic is: there is no inter-transaction guarding performed
for non MSI quirk (wait polling mode), this patch skips
inter-transaction guarding before wait_event_timeout() for the wait
polling mode to reveal the hidden logic.
The other hidden logic is: there is msleep() inter-transaction guarding
performed when the GPE storming is observed. As after merging this
commit:
Commit: e1d4d90fc0
Subject: ACPI / EC: Refine command storm prevention support
EC_FLAGS_COMMAND_STORM is ensured to be cleared after invoking
acpi_ec_transaction_unlocked(), the msleep() guard logic will never
happen now. Since no one complains such change, this logic is likely
added during the old times where the EC race issues are not fixed and
the bugs are false root-caused to the timing issue. This patch simply
removes the out-dated logic. We can restore it by stop skipping
inter-transaction guarding for wait polling mode.
Two different delay values are defined for msleep() and udelay() while
they are merged in this patch to 550us.
2. time_after() causes additional delay in the polling mode (can only be
observed in noirq suspend/resume processes where polling mode is always
used) before advance_transaction() is invoked ("wait polling" log is
added before wait_event_timeout()). We can see 2 wait_event_timeout()
invocations. This is because time_after() ensures a ">" validation while
we only need a ">=" validation here:

This is to cover heriarchies of device objects where the kernel
is only supposed to use a struct device representation for the
topmost one and the others represent, for example, functional
blocks of a composite device.

Currently you can specify the weight of the cooling device in the device
tree but that information is not populated to the
thermal_bind_params where the fair share governor expects it to
be. The of thermal zone device doesn't have a thermal_bind_params
structure and arguably it's better to pass the weight inside the
thermal_instance as it is specific to the bind of a cooling device to a
thermal zone parameter.
Core thermal code is fixed to populate the weight in the instance from
the thermal_bind_params, so platform code that was passing the weight
inside the thermal_bind_params continue to work seamlessly.
While we are at it, create a default value for the weight parameter for
those thermal zones that currently don't define it and remove the
hardcoded default in of-thermal.

Commit eec15edbb0 (ACPI / PNP: use device ID list for PNPACPI device
enumeration) changed the way how ACPI devices are enumerated and when
they are added to the PNP bus.
However, it broke the sound card support on (at least) a vintage
IBM ThinkPad 600E: with said commit applied, two of the necessary
"CSC01xx" devices are not added to the PNP bus and hence can not be
found during the initialization of the "snd-cs4236" module. As a
consequence, loading "snd-cs4236" causes null pointer exceptions.
The attached patch fixes the problem end re-enables sound on the
IBM ThinkPad 600E.

An IO port or MMIO resource assigned to a PCI host bridge may be
consumed by the host bridge itself or available to its child
bus/devices. The ACPI specification defines a bit (Producer/Consumer)
to tell whether the resource is consumed by the host bridge itself,
but firmware hasn't used that bit consistently, so we can't rely on it.
Before commit 593669c2ac ("x86/PCI/ACPI: Use common ACPI resource
interfaces to simplify implementation"), arch/x86/pci/acpi.c ignored
all IO port resources defined by acpi_resource_io and
acpi_resource_fixed_io to filter out IO ports consumed by the host
bridge itself.
Commit 593669c2ac ("x86/PCI/ACPI: Use common ACPI resource interfaces
to simplify implementation") started accepting all IO port and MMIO
resources, which caused a regression that IO port resources consumed
by the host bridge itself became available to its child devices.
Then commit 63f1789ec7 ("x86/PCI/ACPI: Ignore resources consumed by
host bridge itself") ignored resources consumed by the host bridge
itself by checking the IORESOURCE_WINDOW flag, which accidently removed
MMIO resources defined by acpi_resource_memory24, acpi_resource_memory32
and acpi_resource_fixed_memory32.
On x86 and IA64 platforms, all IO port and MMIO resources are assumed
to be available to child bus/devices except one special case:
IO port [0xCF8-0xCFF] is consumed by the host bridge itself
to access PCI configuration space.
So explicitly filter out PCI CFG IO ports[0xCF8-0xCFF]. This solution
will also ease the way to consolidate ACPI PCI host bridge common code
from x86, ia64 and ARM64.

ACPI for arm64 has been in development for a while now and hardware
has been available that can boot with either FDT or ACPI tables. This
has been made possible by both changes to the ACPI spec to cater for
ARM-based machines (known as "hardware-reduced" in ACPI parlance) but
also a Linaro-driven effort to get this supported on top of the Linux
kernel. This pull request is the result of that work.
These changes allow us to initialise the CPUs, interrupt controller,
and timers via ACPI tables, with memory information and cmdline coming
from EFI. We don't support a hybrid ACPI/FDT scheme. Of course,
there is still plenty of work to do (a serial console would be nice!)
but I expect that to happen on a per-driver basis after this core
series has been merged.
Anyway, the diff stat here is fairly horrible, but splitting this up
and merging it via all the different subsystems would have been
extremely painful. Instead, we've got all the relevant Acks in place
and I've not seen anything other than trivial (Kconfig) conflicts in
-next (for completeness, I've included my resolution below). Nearly
half of the insertions fall under Documentation/.
So, we'll see how this goes. Right now, it all depends on EXPERT and
I fully expect people to use FDT by default for the immediate future"

If the special PRP0001 device ID is present in the given device's list
of ACPI/PNP IDs and the device has a valid "compatible" property in
the _DSD, it should be enumerated using the default mechanism,
unless some scan handlers match the IDs preceding PRP0001 in the
device's list of ACPI/PNP IDs. In addition to that, no scan handlers
matching the IDs following PRP0001 in that list should be attached
to the device.
To make that happen, define a scan handler that will match PRP0001
and trigger the default enumeration for the matching devices if the
"compatible" property is present for them.
Since that requires the check for platform_id and device->handler
to be removed from acpi_default_enumeration(), move the fallback
invocation of acpi_default_enumeration() to acpi_bus_attach()
(after it's checked if there's a matching ACPI driver for the
device), which is a better place to call it, and do the platform_id
check in there too (device->handler is guaranteed to be unset at
the point where the function is looking for a matching ACPI driver).

Pull power management and ACPI updates from Rafael Wysocki:
"These are mostly fixes and cleanups all over, although there are a few
items that sort of fall into the new feature category.
First off, we have new callbacks for PM domains that should help us to
handle some issues related to device initialization in a better way.
There also is some consolidation in the unified device properties API
area allowing us to use that inferface for accessing data coming from
platform initialization code in addition to firmware-provided data.
We have some new device/CPU IDs in a few drivers, support for new
chips and a new cpufreq driver too.

It is reported that ACPI interrupts do not work any more on
Dell Latitude D600 after commit c50f13c672 (ACPICA: Save
current masks of enabled GPEs after enable register writes).
The problem turns out to be related to the fact that the
enable_mask and enable_for_run GPE bit masks are not in
sync (in the absence of any system suspend/resume events)
for at least one GPE register on that machine.
Address this problem by writing the enable_for_run mask into
enable_mask as soon as enable_for_run is updated instead of
doing that only after the subsequent register write has
succeeded. For consistency, update acpi_hw_gpe_enable_write()
to store the bit mask to be written into the GPE register
in enable_mask unconditionally before the write.
Since the ACPI_GPE_SAVE_MASK flag is not necessary any more after
that, drop it along with the symbols depending on it.

ACPICA commit 6853da4c0a99b49d62d6c58d22956cd6ff5759a9
The following commit has fixed local printf issue in width.prec:
Commit: 3589b8b8af
Subject: ACPICA: Utilities: Fix local printf issue.
But this commit only resets width/precision/quialifier to fix the reported
issue and doesn't fix other states issues. So now we still can see breakage
in format types and integer bases.
This patch resets format type/base states for local printf to fix this
issue. Lv Zheng.

ACPICA commit 7af00219681ab35ebe57d64a9189fd04a5a026d8
Windows uses a value of 2, and has no plans to ever change this. So, _REV is
essentially useless for its primary purpose.
Worse, some BIOS vendors have used the difference in _REV values between
Windows and ACPICA to indicate which one is running.
It has been decided by the ACPI community to deprecate this method, and return
1 for ACPI 1.0 (32-bit integers) and 2 for ACPI 2.0 and greater (both 32-bit
and 64-bit integers.
ACPICA is changed to reflect this.

ACPICA commit d115fe2ffdab449d6107d58580c5afd0a81d65fe
This change adds the basic low-level infrastructure for the External
AML opcode. The interpreter will simply ignore this op, as the op
is intended for use by the disassembler only.
Note that External() opcode is useful for disassembler, interpreter
can simply ignore it and still return exceptions for unknown control
methods so the kernel part only includes the grammar definition of
External() opcode in order to ignore it but doesn't interpret it.

ACPICA commit 6eb364d790dd103bd4990f808e0095a421c437cb
acpi_tb_store_table() implements a logic that is only correct to iasl. So it
won't be used by any other utilities except iasl. This function is
complained by the kernel users as an unused function. The best choice to
stop releasing it to the Linux kernel should be moving it to adisasm.c.
ACPI table manager can use both struct acpi_table_desc (direct referencing)
and table index (indirect referencing) as the descriptor to the table, so
acpi_tb_get_next_root_index() is extended to return both of them to allow
maximum usability from the callers. NOTE that indirect referencing is a
design result to meet the boot stage static allocation requirement for the
table descriptors.
This is a linuxized acpi_tb_store_table() removing result, there should be
no functional changes introduced to the Linux kernel by this patch except
the additonal kernel unused argument for acpi_tb_get_next_root_index()
(renamed to acpi_tb_get_next_root_index()). This argument is used in the
ACPICA upstream.

ACPICA commit e25d791e4b3d5b9f4ead298269610cb05f89749a
There is a facility in Linux, developers can obtain GPE and fixed event
status via /sys/firmware/interrupts/. This is implemented using
acpi_get_event_status() and acpi_get_gpe_status(). Recently while debugging some
GPE race issues, it is found that the facility is lacking in the ability to
obtain real hardware register values, the confusing information makes
debugging difficult.
This patch modifies acpi_get_gpe_status() to return EN register values to fix
this gap. Then flags returned from acpi_get_event_status() and
acpi_get_gpe_status() are also cleaned up to reflect this change.
The old ACPI_EVENT_FLAG_SET is carefully kept to avoid regressions. It can
be deleted after we can make sure all its references are removed from OSPM
code. Lv Zheng.

ACPICA commit 154f6d074dd38d6ebc0467ad454454e6c5c9ecdf

Known issues:
1. Cleanup of "(ACPI_PHYSICAL_ADDRRESS) x" for a table field
For the conversions around the table fields, it is better to fix it with
alignment also fixed. So this patch doesn't modify such code. There

ACPICA commit 7d9fd64397d7c38899d3dc497525f6e6b044e0e3
OSPMs like Linux expect an acpi_physical_address returning value from
acpi_find_root_pointer(). This triggers warnings if sizeof (acpi_size) doesn't
equal to sizeof (acpi_physical_address):
drivers/acpi/osl.c:275:3: warning: passing argument 1 of 'acpi_find_root_pointer' from incompatible pointer type [enabled by default]

Currently, the ACPI modalias creation covers two mutually exclusive
cases: If the PRP0001 device ID is present in the device's list of
ACPI/PNP IDs and the "compatible" property is present in _DSD, the
created modalias will follow the OF rules of modalias creation.
Otherwise, ACPI rules are used.
However, that is not really desirable, because the presence of PRP0001
in the list of device IDs generally does not preclude using other
ACPI/PNP IDs with that device and those other IDs may be of higher
priority. In those cases, the other IDs should take preference over
PRP0001 and therefore they also should be present in the modalias.
For this reason, rework the modalias creation for ACPI so that it
shows both the ACPI-style and OF-style modalias strings if the
device has a non-empty list of ACPI/PNP IDs (other than PRP0001)
and a valid "compatible" property at the same time.

If the special PRP0001 device ID is present in a device's _CID list,
it should not prevent any ACPI/PNP IDs preceding it in the device's
list of identifiers from being matched first. That is, only if none
of the IDs preceding PRP0001 in the device's PNP/ACPI IDs list
matches the IDs recognized by the driver, the driver's list of
"compatible" IDs should be matched against the device's "compatible"
property, if present.
In addition to that, drivers can provide both acpi_match_table and
of_match_table at the same time and the of_compatible matching
should be used in that case too if PRP0001 is present in the
device's list of identifiers.
To make that happen, rework acpi_driver_match_device() to do the
"compatible" property check in addition to matching the driver's
list of ACPI IDs against the device's one.

While looking through the (ab)use of the clockevents_notify()
function I stumbled over the following gem in the acpi_pad code:
if (lapic_detected_unstable && !lapic_marked_unstable) {
/* LAPIC could halt in idle, so notify users */
for_each_online_cpu(i)
clockevents_notify(CLOCK_EVT_NOTIFY_BROADCAST_ON, &i);
lapic_marked_unstable = 1;
}
This code calls on the cpu which detects the lapic unstable
condition first clockevents_notify() to tell the core code that
the broadcast should be enabled on all online cpus. Brilliant
stuff that as it notifies the core code a num_online_cpus()
times that the broadcast should be enabled on the current cpu.
This probably has never been noticed because that code got never
tested with NOHZ=n and HIGHRES_TIMER=n or it just worked by
chance because one of the other mechanisms told the core in the
right way that the local apic timer is wreckaged.
Sigh, this is:
- The 4th incarnation of idle drivers which has their own mechanism
to detect and deal with X86_FEATURE_ARAT.
- The 2nd incarnation of fake idle mechanisms with a different set of
brainmelting bugs.
- Has been merged against an explicit NAK of the scheduler
maintainer with the promise to improve it over time.
- Another example of featuritis driven trainwreck engineering.
- Another pointless waste of my time.
Fix this nonsense by removing that lapic detection and
notification logic and simply call into the clockevents code
unconditonally. The ARAT feature is marked in the lapic
clockevent already so the core code will just ignore the
requests and return.

On some machines(E,G Mircosoft surface 3), ACPI battery depends on
the EC operation region and it has _DEP method which contains EC.
Current code doesn't support such devices whose dep_unmet will be
not be decreased after EC opregion handler being installed. This
blocks battery device to be attached with its driver. This patch
is to fix the issue.

Currently, in suspend-to-idle, wakeup GPE for PCI devices are
handled properly because acpi_pci_sleep_wake() invokes acpi_enable_gpe()
to enable the wakeup GPE directly. But for the other wakeup-capable
devices in ACPI bus, acpi_enable_wakeup_devices() should be invoked
to update enable_for_wake mask in gpe_register_info structure, thus
acpi_enable_all_wakeup_gpes() can enable the wakeup GPE referred in
_PRW methods. And acpi_disable_wakeup_devices() will be called
before disable_irq_wake() in acpi_freeze_restore() to restore the mask.
This patch fixes a power button wakeup problem on Surface Pro 3,
on which platform power button uses EC to deliver event
(EC GPE is referred in _PRW).
Note: enabling EC GPE during freeze state may bring some risks
because EC events are expected to fire more frequently than others.
Thus it may bring the system out of freeze state unnecessarily.
(We already have comments about this in bugzilla)

The code deployed to implement GSI linux IRQ numbers mapping on arm64 turns
out to be generic enough so that it can be moved to ACPI core code along
with its respective config option ACPI_GENERIC_GSI selectable on
architectures that can reuse the same code.
Current ACPI IRQ mapping code is not integrated in the kernel IRQ domain
infrastructure, in particular there is no way to look-up the
IRQ domain associated with a particular interrupt controller, so this
first version of GSI generic code carries out the GSI<->IRQ mapping relying
on the IRQ default domain which is supposed to be always set on a
specific architecture in case the domain structure passed to
irq_create/find_mapping() functions is missing.
This patch moves the arm64 acpi functions that implement the gsi mappings:
acpi_gsi_to_irq()
acpi_register_gsi()
acpi_unregister_gsi()
to ACPI core code. Since the generic GSI<->domain mapping is based on IRQ
domains, it can be extended as soon as a way to map an interrupt
controller to an IRQ domain is implemented for ACPI in the IRQ domain
layer.
x86 and ia64 code for GSI mappings cannot rely on the generic GSI
layer at present for legacy reasons, so they do not select the
ACPI_GENERIC_GSI config options and keep relying on their arch
specific GSI mapping layer.

Introduce ACPI_IRQ_MODEL_GIC which is needed for ARM64 as GIC is

CPU hardware ID (phys_id) is defined as u32 in structure acpi_processor,
but phys_id is used as int in acpi processor driver, so it will lead to
some inconsistence for the drivers.
Furthermore, to cater for ACPI arch ports that implement 64 bits CPU
ids a generic CPU physical id type is required.
So introduce typedef u32 phys_cpuid_t in a common file, and introduce
a macro PHYS_CPUID_INVALID as (phys_cpuid_t)(-1) if it's not defined
by other archs, this will solve the inconsistence in acpi processor driver,
and will prepare for the ACPI on ARM64 for the 64 bit CPU hardware ID
in the following patch.

ACPI 5.1 does not currently support S states for ARM64 hardware but
ACPI code will call acpi_target_system_state() and acpi_sleep_init()
for device power management, so introduce
CONFIG_ACPI_SYSTEM_POWER_STATES_SUPPORT and select it for x86 and
ia64 only to make sleep functions available, and also introduce stub
function to allow other drivers to function until S states are defined
for ARM64.
It will be no functional change for x86 and IA64.

For a normal 8 cpu sockets system, it will up to 240 cpu threads (Xeon E7
v2 family for now), and we need 240 entries for local apic or local x2apic
in MADT table, so it will be much verbose information printed with a slow
uart console when system booted, this will be even worse with large system
with 16/32 cpu sockets.
This patch just use pr_debug() instead of pr_info() for ioapic/iosapic,
local apic/x2apic/sapic structures when scanning the MADT table to remove
those verbose information, but leave other structures unchanged.

The Lenovo Ideapad Z570 (which is an Acer in disguise like some other Ideapads)
has a broken acpi_video interface, this was fixed in commmit a11d342fb8
("ACPI / video: force vendor backlight on Lenovo Ideapad Z570").
Which stops acpi_video from registering a backlight interface, but this is
only a partial fix, because for people who have the ideapad-laptop module
installed that module will now register a backlight interface, which also
does not work, so we need to use the native intel_backlight interface.
The Lenovo Ideapad 570 is a pre-win8 laptop / too old for the acpi-video code
to automatically prefer the native backlight interface, so add a quirk for it.
This commit also removes the previous incomplete fix.

The native backlight behavior (so not registering both the acpi-video
and the vendor backlight driver) can be useful on some non win8 machines
too, so change the behavior of the video.use_native_backlight=1 or 0
kernel cmdline option to be: if user has set video.use_native_backlight=1
or 0, use that no matter if it is a win8 system or not. Also, we will
put some known systems into the DMI table to make them either use native
backlight interface or not, and the use_native_backlight_dmi is used to
reflect that.

Commit b4b55cda58 (Refine the way to release PCI IRQ resources)
introduced a regression in the PCI IRQ resource management by causing
the IRQ resource of a device, established when pci_enabled_device()
is called on a fully disabled device, to be released when the driver
is unbound from the device, regardless of the enable_cnt.
This leads to the situation that an ill-behaved driver can now make a
device unusable to subsequent drivers by an imbalance in their use of
pci_enable/disable_device(). That is a serious problem for secondary
drivers like vfio-pci, which are innocent of the transgressions of
the previous driver.
Since the solution of this problem is not immediate and requires
further discussion, revert commit b4b55cda58 and the issue it was
supposed to address (a bug related to xen-pciback) will be taken
care of in a different way going forward.

Now that the ACPI companions of devices are represented by pointers
to struct fwnode_handle, it is not quite efficient to check whether
or not an ACPI companion of a device is present by evaluating the
ACPI_COMPANION() macro.
For this reason, introduce a special static inline routine for that,
has_acpi_companion(), and update the code to use it where applicable.

Now that we have struct fwnode_handle, we can use that to point to
ACPI companions from struct device objects instead of pointing to
struct acpi_device directly.
There are two benefits from that. First, the somewhat ugly and
hackish struct acpi_dev_node can be dropped and, second, the same
struct fwnode_handle pointer can be used in the future to point
to other (non-ACPI) firmware device node types.

Change the ownership of power_supply structure from each driver
implementing the class to the power supply core.
The patch changes power_supply_register() function thus all drivers
implementing power supply class are adjusted.
Each driver provides the implementation of power supply. However it
should not be the owner of power supply class instance because it is
exposed by core to other subsystems with power_supply_get_by_name().
These other subsystems have no knowledge when the driver will unregister
the power supply. This leads to several issues when driver is unbound -
mostly because user of power supply accesses freed memory.
Instead let the core own the instance of struct 'power_supply'. Other
users of this power supply will still access valid memory because it
will be freed when device reference count reaches 0. Currently this
means "it will leak" but power_supply_put() call in next patches will
solve it.
This solves invalid memory references in following race condition
scenario:
Thread 1: charger manager
Thread 2: power supply driver, used by charger manager
THREAD 1 (charger manager) THREAD 2 (power supply driver)
========================== ==============================
psy = power_supply_get_by_name()
Driver unbind, .remove
power_supply_unregister()
Device fully removed
psy->get_property()
The 'get_property' call is executed in invalid context because the driver was
unbound and struct 'power_supply' memory was freed.
This could be observed easily with charger manager driver (here compiled
with max17040 fuel gauge):
$ cat /sys/devices/virtual/power_supply/cm-battery/capacity &
$ echo "1-0036" > /sys/bus/i2c/drivers/max17040/unbind

Add new structure 'power_supply_config' for holding run-time
initialization data like of_node, supplies and private driver data.
The power_supply_register() function is changed so all power supply
drivers need updating.
When registering the power supply this new 'power_supply_config' should be
used instead of directly initializing 'struct power_supply'. This allows
changing the ownership of power_supply structure from driver to the
power supply core in next patches.
When a driver does not use of_node or supplies then it should use NULL
as config. If driver uses of_node or supplies then it should allocate
config on stack and initialize it with proper values.

+++++: boundary of driver starting/stopping
boundary of IRQ storming

*****: boundary of EC command
boundary of EC query

Pull one more batch of power management and ACPI updates from Rafael Wysocki:
"These are mostly fixes on top of the previously merged recent PM and
ACPI material.
First, one commit that broke the ACPI LPSS (Low-Power Subsystem)
driver on a Dell box is reverted and there are two stable-candidate
fixes for that driver. Another fix cleans up two recently added ACPI
EC messages that look odd and the printk level of a noisy debug
message in the core ACPI resources handling code is reduced.
In addition to that we have two stable-candidate fixes for the s3c
cpufreq driver, two cpuidle powernv driver updates related to Device
Trees and a PNP subsystem cleanup that will allow us to get rid of
some old ugliness going forward. Also there is a new blacklist entry
for the ACPI backlight code.
Specifics:
- Revert a recent ACPI LPSS driver commit that prevented the touchpad
driver from loading on Dell XPS13 (Jarkko Nikula).
- Make the ACPI LPSS driver disable the I2C controllers and deassert
SPI host controllers resets at startup on Intel BayTrail and
Braswell SoCs in case they have been left in wrong states by the
platform firmware which then may casuse fatal controller driver
failures during resume from hibernation (Mika Westerberg).
- Make two recently added ACPI EC messages look better (Scot Doyle).
- Reduce the printk level of a recently added debug message related
to ACPI resources that may become noisy in some cases (Rafael J
Wysocki).
- Add a new ACPI backlight blacklist entry for Samsung Series 9
(900X3C/900X3D/900X3E/900X4C/900X4D) laptops where the native
backlight interface doesn't work while the ACPI based one does
(Jens Reyer).
- Make the PNP sybsystem's core code use __request_region() followed
by __release_region() instead of __check_region() which then will
allow us to get rid of the latter as it has no more users (Jakub
Sitnicki).
- Fix a build breakage and an issue with two __init functions that
may be called after initialization in the s3c cpufreq driver (Arnd
Bergmann).
- Make the powernv cpuidle driver read target_residency values for
idle states from a Device Tree (as we have the suitable DT bindings
for that now) and improve the parsing of the powermgmt DT node in
that driver (Preeti U Murthy)"

On some Braswell systems BIOS leaves resets for SPI host controllers
active. This prevents the SPI driver from transferring messages on wire.
Fix this in similar way that we do for I2C already by deasserting resets
for the SPI host controllers.

On Baytrail and Braswell the BIOS might leave the I2C host controllers
enabled, probably because it uses them for its own purposes. This is fine
in normal cases because the I2C driver will disable the hardware when it
is probed anyway.
However, in case of suspend to disk it is different story. If the driver
happens to be compiled as a module the boot kernel never loads the driver
thus leaving host controllers enabled upon loading the hibernation image.
The I2C host controller interrupt mask register has default value of 0x8ff,
in other words it has most of the interrupts unmasked. When combined with
the fact that the host controller is enabled, the driver immediately starts
getting interrupts even before its resume hook is called (once IO-APIC is
resumed). Since the driver is not prepared for this it will crash the
kernel due to NULL pointer derefence because dev->msgs is NULL.
Unfortunately we were not able to get full backtrace to from the console
which could be reproduced here.
In order to fix this even when the driver is compiled as module, we disable
the I2C host controllers in byt_i2c_setup() before devices are created.

Add video_disable_native_backlight quirk for SAMSUNG 900X3C/900X3D/

The native intel backlight controls do not work correctly on SAMSUNG

One machine has an completely dimmed (= black) display after boot at the
GDM login screen and brightness controls work only between 0 and 5%
(= no effect).
Another machine has the same brightness control issues if an external
HDMI monitor is or gets connected, although the initial brightness is
ok.
After login to Gnome both machines always work fine.

Revert commit b893e80e31 ("ACPI / LPSS: Remove non-existing clock control
from Intel Lynxpoint I2C") because it causes touchpad to not load on Dell
XPS13.
Regression is a clear indication that not only some early prototype version
of Lynxpoint I2C but also newer versions can be doing clock gating even
documentation does not state it.
Therefore it is best to revert since this clock gating haven't caused known
issues on those Lynxpoint version which don't do clock gating.

Pull ACPI and power management updates from Rafael Wysocki:
"We have a few new features this time, including a new SFI-based
cpufreq driver, a new devfreq driver for Tegra Activity Monitor, a new
devfreq class for providing its governors with raw utilization data
and a new ACPI driver for AMD SoCs.
Still, the majority of changes here are reworks of existing code to
make it more straightforward or to prepare it for implementing new
features on top of it. The primary example is the rework of ACPI
resources handling from Jiang Liu, Thomas Gleixner and Lv Zheng with
support for IOAPIC hotplug implemented on top of it, but there is
quite a number of changes of this kind in the cpufreq core, ACPICA,
ACPI EC driver, ACPI processor driver and the generic power domains

In commit 5de21bb998 ("ACPI / PM: Drop CONFIG_PM_RUNTIME from the
ACPI core"), all occurrences of CONFIG_PM_RUNTIME were replaced with
CONFIG_PM. This created the following structure of #ifdef blocks in
the code:
[...]
#ifdef CONFIG_PM
#ifdef CONFIG_PM
/* always on / undead */
#ifdef CONFIG_PM_SLEEP
[...]
#endif
#endif
[...]
#endif
This patch removes the inner "#ifdef CONFIG_PM" block as it will
always be enabled when the outer block is enabled. This inconsistency
was found using the undertaker-checkpatch tool.
