clang static analysis reports this problem
rnbd-clt.c:1212:11: warning: Branch condition evaluates to a
garbage value
else if (!first)
^~~~~~
This is triggered in the find_and_get_or_create_sess() call
because the variable first is not initialized and the
earlier check is specifically for
if (sess == ERR_PTR(-ENOMEM))
This is false positive.
But the if-check can be reduced by initializing first to
false and then returning if the call to find_or_creat_sess()
does not set it to true. When it remains false, either
sess will be valid or not. The not case is caught by
find_and_get_or_create_sess()'s caller rnbd_clt_map_device()
sess = find_and_get_or_create_sess(...);
if (IS_ERR(sess))
return ERR_CAST(sess);
Since find_and_get_or_create_sess() initializes first to false
setting it in find_or_create_sess() is not needed.

We changed the rnbd_srv_sess_dev_force_close to use try-lock
because rnbd_srv_sess_dev_force_close and process_msg_close
can generate a deadlock.
Now rnbd_srv_sess_dev_force_close would do nothing
if it fails to get the lock. So removing the force_close
file should be moved to after the lock. Or the force_close
file is removed but the others are not removed.

They are defined with the same value and similar meaning, let's remove
one of them, then we can remove {WAIT,NOWAIT}.
Also change the type of 'wait' from 'int' to 'enum wait_type' to make
it clear.

This will enable changing the virtual boundary of null blk devices. For
now, null blk devices didn't have any restriction on the scatter/gather
elements received from the block layer. Add a module parameter and a
configfs option that will control the virtual boundary. This will
enable testing the efficiency of the block layer bounce buffer in case
a suitable application will send discontiguous IO to the given device.
Initial testing with patched FIO showed the following results (64 jobs,
128 iodepth, 1 nullb device):

swim3 only uses the virtual address of a bio to stash it into the data
transfer using virt_to_bus. But the ppc32 virt_to_bus just uses the
physical address with an offset. Replace virt_to_bus with a local hack
that performs the equivalent transformation and stop asking for block
layer bounce buffering.

Always use the track buffer that is already used for addresses outside
the 16MB address capability of the floppy controller. This allows to
remove a lot of code that relies on kernel virtual addresses. With
this gone there is just a single place left that looks at the bio,
which can be converted to memcpy_{from,to}_page, thus removing the need
for the extra block-layer bounce buffering for highmem pages.

block: only update parent bi_status when bio fail
Memory backed or zoned null block devices may generate actual request
timeout errors due to the submission path being blocked on memory
allocation or zone locking. Unlike fake timeouts or injected timeouts,
the request submission path will call blk_mq_complete_request() or
blk_mq_end_request() for these real timeout errors, causing a double
completion and use after free situation as the block layer timeout
handler executes blk_mq_rq_timed_out() and __blk_mq_free_request() in
blk_mq_check_expired(). This problem often triggers a NULL pointer
dereference such as:
BUG: kernel NULL pointer dereference, address: 0000000000000050

This problem very often triggers when running the full btrfs xfstests
on a memory-backed zoned null block device in a VM with limited amount
of memory.
Avoid this by executing blk_mq_complete_request() in null_timeout_rq()
only for commands that are marked for a fake timeout completion using
the fake_timeout boolean in struct null_cmd. For timeout errors injected
through debugfs, the timeout handler will execute
blk_mq_complete_request()i as before. This is safe as the submission
path does not execute complete requests in this case.
In null_timeout_rq(), also make sure to set the command error field to
BLK_STS_TIMEOUT and to propagate this error through to the request
completion.

commit 0d8359620d ("zram: support page writeback") introduced two
problems. It overwrites writeback_store's return value as kstrtol's
return value, which makes return value zero so user could see zero as
return value of write syscall even though it wrote data successfully.
It also breaks index value in the loop in that it doesn't increase the
index any longer. It means it can write only first starting block index
so user couldn't write all idle pages in the zram so lose memory saving
chance.
This patch fixes those issues.

writeback_store's return value is overwritten by submit_bio_wait's return
value. Thus, writeback_store will return zero since there was no IO
error. In the end, write syscall from userspace will see the zero as
return value, which could make the process stall to keep trying the write
until it will succeed.

There exists multiple path may do zram compaction concurrently.
1. auto-compaction triggered during memory reclaim
2. userspace utils write zram<id>/compaction node
So, multiple threads may call zs_shrinker_scan/zs_compact concurrently.
But pages_compacted is a per zsmalloc pool variable and modification
of the variable is not serialized(through under class->lock).
There are two issues here:
1. the pages_compacted may not equal to total number of pages
freed(due to concurrently add).
2. zs_shrinker_scan may not return the correct number of pages
freed(issued by current shrinker).
The fix is simple:
1. account the number of pages freed in zs_compact locally.
2. use actomic variable pages_compacted to accumulate total number.

module parameter 'virtblk_queue_depth' was firstly introduced for
testing/benchmarking purposes described in commit fc4324b459
("virtio-blk: base queue-depth on virtqueue ringsize or module param").
And currently 'virtblk_queue_depth' is used as a saved value for the
first probed device.
Since we have different virtio-blk devices which have different
capabilities, it requires that we support per-device queue depth instead
of per-module. So defaultly use vq free elements if module parameter
'virtblk_queue_depth' is not set.

There exists a race where we can be attempting to create a new nbd
configuration while a previous configuration is going down, both
configured with DESTROY_ON_DISCONNECT. Normally devices all have a
reference of 1, as they won't be cleaned up until the module is torn
down. However with DESTROY_ON_DISCONNECT we'll make sure that there is
only 1 reference (generally) on the device for the config itself, and
then once the config is dropped, the device is torn down.
The race that exists looks like this
TASK1 TASK2
nbd_genl_connect()
idr_find()
refcount_inc_not_zero(nbd)
* count is 2 here ^^
nbd_config_put()
nbd_put(nbd) (count is 1)
setup new config
check DESTROY_ON_DISCONNECT
put_dev = true
if (put_dev) nbd_put(nbd)
* free'd here ^^
In nbd_genl_connect() we assume that the nbd ref count will be 2,
however clearly that won't be true if the nbd device had been setup as
DESTROY_ON_DISCONNECT with its prior configuration. Fix this by getting
rid of the runtime flag to check if we need to mess with the nbd device
refcount, and use the device NBD_DESTROY_ON_DISCONNECT flag to check if
we need to adjust the ref counts. This was reported by syzkaller with

There's an I/O error on fsync() in a detached loop device
if it has been previously attached.
The issue is write cache is enabled in the attach path in
loop_configure() but it isn't disabled in the detach path;
thus it remains enabled in the block device regardless of
whether it is attached or not.
Now fsync() can get an I/O request that will just be failed
later in loop_queue_rq() as device's state is not 'Lo_bound'.
So, disable write cache in the detach path.
Do so based on the queue flag, not the loop device flag for
read-only (used to enable) as the queue flag can be changed
via sysfs even on read-only loop devices (e.g., losetup -r.)
Test-case:
# DEV=/dev/loop7
# IMG=/tmp/image
# truncate --size 1M $IMG
# losetup $DEV $IMG
# losetup -d $DEV
Before:
# strace -e fsync parted -s $DEV print 2>&1 | grep fsync
fsync(3) = -1 EIO (Input/output error)

The goto label fail_queue is needed to cleanup the queue allocation
when devm_platform_ioremap_resource() or alloc_disk() fails, either of
these two functions are not dependent on the queue variable which is
allocated prior to these calls.
Allocate the queue variable after successful alloc_disk(). Return
error directly when devm_platform_ioremap_resource() or alloc_disk()
fail. Remove fail_queue label and a call to the blk_cleanup_queue().
Direct return from these two functions allows us to remove the local
variable err and allocating queue after alloc_disk() allows us to
remove the local variable queue so we use disk->queue directly.

The function uses a goto-based loop, which may lead to an earlier error
getting discarded by a later iteration. Exit this ad-hoc loop when an
error was encountered.
The out-of-memory error path additionally fails to fill a structure
field looked at by xen_blkbk_unmap_prepare() before inspecting the
handle which does get properly set (to BLKBACK_INVALID_HANDLE).
Since the earlier exiting from the ad-hoc loop requires the same field
filling (invalidation) as that on the out-of-memory path, fold both
paths. While doing so, drop the pr_alert(), as extra log messages aren't
going to help the situation (the kernel will log oom conditions already
anyway).

Don't make problems worse, the more that handling elsewhere (together

odd way of dealing with errors.

This issue was originally fixed in 09954bad4 ("floppy: refactor open()
flags handling").
The fix as a side-effect, however, introduce issue for open(O_ACCMODE)
that is being used for ioctl-only open. I wrote a fix for that, but
instead of it being merged, full revert of 09954bad4 was performed,
re-introducing the O_NDELAY / O_NONBLOCK issue, and it strikes again.
This is a forward-port of the original fix to current codebase; the
original submission had the changelog below:
====
Commit 09954bad4 ("floppy: refactor open() flags handling"), as a
side-effect, causes open(/dev/fdX, O_ACCMODE) to fail. It turns out that
this is being used setfdprm userspace for ioctl-only open().
Reintroduce back the original behavior wrt !(FMODE_READ|FMODE_WRITE)
modes, while still keeping the original O_NDELAY bug fixed.

Currently, loop device has only one global lock: loop_ctl_mutex.
This becomes hot in scenarios where many loop devices are used.
Scale it by introducing per-device lock: lo_mutex that protects
modifications of all fields in struct loop_device.
Keep loop_ctl_mutex to protect global data: loop_index_idr, loop_lookup,
loop_add.
The new lock ordering requirement is that loop_ctl_mutex must be taken
before lo_mutex.

This is inline with the specification described in blkif.h:
* discard-granularity: should be set to the physical block size if
node is not present.
* discard-alignment, discard-secure: should be set to 0 if node not
present.
This was detected as QEMU would only create the discard-granularity
node but not discard-alignment, and thus the setup done in
blkfront_setup_discard would fail.
Fix blkfront_setup_discard to not fail on missing nodes, and also fix
blkif_set_queue_limits to set the discard granularity to the physical

When setting up a device, we can krealloc the config->socks array to add
new sockets to the configuration. However if we happen to get a IO
request in at this point even though we aren't setup we could hit a UAF,
as we deref config->socks without any locking, assuming that the
configuration was setup already and that ->socks is safe to access it as
we have a reference on the configuration.
But there's nothing really preventing IO from occurring at this point of
the device setup, we don't want to incur the overhead of a lock to
access ->socks when it will never change while the device is running.
To fix this UAF scenario simply freeze the queue if we are adding
sockets. This will protect us from this particular case without adding
any additional overhead for the normal running case.

Previously the rnbd client requested the rtrs to allocate rnbd_iu
just after the rtrs_iu. So the rnbd client passes the size of
rnbd_iu for rtrs_clt_open() and rtrs creates an array of
rnbd_iu and rtrs_iu.
For IO handling, rnbd_iu exists after the request because we pass
the size of rnbd_iu when setting the tag-set. Therefore we do not
use the rnbd_iu allocated by rtrs for IO handling.
We only use the rnbd_iu allocated by rtrs when doing session
initialization. Almost all rnbd_iu allocated by rtrs are wasted.
By this patch the rnbd client does not request rnbd_iu allocation
to rtrs but allocate it for itself when doing session initialization.
Also remove unused rtrs_permit_to_pdu from rtrs.

The BMAX_SEGMENT static array for scatterlist is embedded in
rnbd_iu structure to avoid memory allocation in hot IO path.
In many cases, we do need only several sg entries because many IOs
have only several segments.
This patch change rnbd_iu to check the number of segments in the request
and allocate sglist dynamically.
For io path, use sg_alloc_table_chained to allocate sg list faster.
First it makes two sg entries after pdu of request.
The sg_alloc_table_chained uses the pre-allocated sg entries
if the number of segments of the request is less than two.
So it reduces the number of memory allocation.

The rnbd-client always sets the write-back cache and fua attributes
of the rnbd device queue regardless of the target device on the server.
That generates IO hang issue when the target device does not
support both of write-back cacne and fua.
This patch adds more fields for the cache policy and fua into the
device opening message. The rnbd-server sends the information
if the target device supports the write-back cache and fua
and rnbd-client recevives it and set the device queue accordingly.

From the beginning, the zram block device always enabled CRYPTO_LZO,
since lzo-rle is hardcoded as the fallback compression algorithm. As a
consequence, on systems where another compression algorithm is chosen
(e.g. CRYPTO_ZSTD), the lzo kernel module becomes unused, while still
having to be built/loaded.
This patch removes the hardcoded lzo-rle dependency and allows the user
to select the default compression algorithm for zram at build time. The
previous behaviour is kept, as the default algorithm is still lzo-rle.

When xen_blkif_disconnect() is called, the kernel thread behind the
block interface is stopped by calling kthread_stop(ring->xenblkd).
The ring->xenblkd thread pointer being non-NULL determines if the
thread has been already stopped.
Normally, the thread's function xen_blkif_schedule() sets the
ring->xenblkd to NULL, when the thread's main loop ends.
However, when the thread has not been started yet (i.e.
wake_up_process() has not been called on it), the xen_blkif_schedule()
function would not be called yet.
In such case the kthread_stop() call returns -EINTR and the
ring->xenblkd remains dangling.
When this happens, any consecutive call to xen_blkif_disconnect (for
example in frontend_changed() callback) leads to a kernel crash in
kthread_stop() (e.g. NULL pointer dereference in exit_creds()).
This is XSA-350.

null_handle_discard() is called from both null_handle_rq() and
null_handle_bio(). As these functions are only passed a nullb_cmd
structure, this forces pointer dereferences to identiify the discard
operation code and to access the sector range to be discarded.
Simplify all this by changing the interface of the functions
null_handle_discard() and null_handle_memory_backed() to pass along
the operation code, operation start sector and number of sectors. With
this change null_handle_discard() can be called directly from
null_handle_memory_backed().

When open zone resource management is enabled, that is, when a null_blk
zoned device is created with zone_max_open different than 0, implicitly
or explicitly opening a zone may require implicitly closing a zone
that is already implicitly open. This operation is done using the
function null_close_first_imp_zone(), which search for an implicitly
open zone to close starting from the first sequential zone. This
implementation is simple but may result in the same being constantly
implicitly closed and then implicitly reopened on write, namely, the
lowest numbered zone that is being written.
Avoid this by starting the search for an implicitly open zone starting
from the zone following the last zone that was implicitly closed. The
function null_close_first_imp_zone() is renamed
null_close_imp_open_zone().

With memory backing disabled, using a single spinlock for protecting
zone information and zone resource management prevents the parallel
execution on multiple queue of IO requests to different zones.
Furthermore, regardless of the use of memory backing, if a null_blk
device is created without limits on the number of open and active zones,
accounting for zone resource management is not necessary.
>From these observations, zone locking is changed as follows to improve
performance:
1) the zone_lock spinlock is renamed zone_res_lock and used only if
zone resource management is necessary, that is, if either
zone_max_open or zone_max_active are not 0. This is indicated using
the new boolean need_zone_res_mgmt in the nullb_device structure.
null_zone_write() is modified to reduce the amount of code executed
with the zone_res_lock spinlock held.
2) With memory backing disabled, per zone locking is changed to a
spinlock per zone.
3) Introduce the structure nullb_zone to replace the use of
struct blk_zone for zone information. This new structure includes a
union of a spinlock and a mutex for zone locking. The spinlock is
used when memory backing is disabled and the mutex is used with
memory backing.
With these changes, fio performance with zonemode=zbd for 4K random
read and random write on a dual socket (24 cores per socket) machine
using the none schedulder is as follows:
before patch:
write (psync x 96 jobs) = 465 KIOPS
read (libaio@qd=8 x 96 jobs) = 1361 KIOPS
after patch:
write (psync x 96 jobs) = 456 KIOPS
read (libaio@qd=8 x 96 jobs) = 4096 KIOPS
Write performance remains mostly unchanged but read performance is three
times higher. Performance when using the mq-deadline scheduler is not
changed by this patch as mq-deadline becomes the bottleneck for a
multi-queue device.

The Atari floppy driver usually autodetects the media when used with the
ormal /dev/fd? devices, which also are the only nodes created by udev.
But it also supports various aliases that force a given media format.
That is currently supported using the blk_register_region framework
which finds the floppy gendisk even for a 'mismatched' dev_t. The
problem with this (besides the code complexity) is that it creates
multiple struct block_device instances for the whole device of a
single gendisk, which can lead to interesting issues in code not
aware of that fact.
To fix this just create a separate gendisk for each of the aliases
if they are accessed.

Commit 716ad0986c ("loop: Switch to set_capacity_revalidate_and_notify")
causes an occasional drop of loop device uevent, which are no longer
triggered in loop_set_size() but in a different part of code.
Bug is reproducible with LTP test uevent01 [1]:
i=0; while true; do
i=$((i+1)); echo "== $i =="
lsmod |grep -q loop && rmmod -f loop
./uevent01 || break
done
Put back triggering through code called in loop_set_size().
Fix required to add yet another parameter to

Commit aa1c09cb65 ("null_blk: Fix locking in zoned mode") changed
zone locking to using the potentially sleeping wait_on_bit_io()
function. This is acceptable when memory backing is enabled as the
device queue is in that case marked as blocking, but this triggers a
scheduling while in atomic context with memory backing disabled.
Fix this by relying solely on the device zone spinlock for zone
information protection without temporarily releasing this lock around
null_process_cmd() execution in null_zone_write(). This is OK to do
since when memory backing is disabled, command processing does not
block and the memory backing lock nullb->lock is unused. This solution
avoids the overhead of having to mark a zoned null_blk device queue as
blocking when memory backing is unused.
This patch also adds comments to the zone locking code to explain the
unusual locking scheme.

IRQ is not supposed to be changed at runtime, so there is

When the zoned mode is enabled in null_blk, Serializing read, write
and zone management operations for each zone is necessary to protect
device level information for managing zone resources (zone open and
closed counters) as well as each zone condition and write pointer
position. Commit 35bc10b2ea ("null_blk: synchronization fix for
zoned device") introduced a spinlock to implement this serialization.
However, when memory backing is also enabled, GFP_NOIO memory
allocations are executed under the spinlock, resulting in might_sleep()
warnings. Furthermore, the zone_lock spinlock is locked/unlocked using
spin_lock_irq/spin_unlock_irq, similarly to the memory backing code with
the nullb->lock spinlock. This nested use of irq locks wrecks the irq
enabled/disabled state.
Fix all this by introducing a bitmap for per-zone lock, with locking
implemented using wait_on_bit_lock_io() and clear_and_wake_up_bit().
This locking mechanism allows keeping a zone locked while executing
null_process_cmd(), serializing all operations to the zone while
allowing to sleep during memory backing allocation with GFP_NOIO.
Device level zone resource management information is protected using
a spinlock which is not held while executing null_process_cmd();

In _drbd_send_page() a page is checked by following code before sending
it by kernel_sendpage(),
(page_count(page) < 1) || PageSlab(page)
If the check is true, this page won't be send by kernel_sendpage() and
handled by sock_no_sendpage().
This kind of check is exactly what macro sendpage_ok() does, which is
introduced into include/linux/net.h to solve a similar send page issue
in nvme-tcp code.
This patch uses macro sendpage_ok() to replace the open coded checks to
page type and refcount in _drbd_send_page(), as a code cleanup.

Add support for user space to set a max open zone and a max active zone
limit via configfs. By default, the default values are 0 == no limit.
Call the block layer API functions used for exposing the configured
limits to sysfs.
Add accounting in null_blk_zoned so that these new limits are respected.
Performing an operation that would exceed these limits results in a
standard I/O error.
A max open zone limit exists in the ZBC standard.
While null_blk_zoned is used to test the Zoned Block Device model in
Linux, when it comes to differences between ZBC and ZNS, null_blk_zoned
mostly follows ZBC.
Therefore, implement the manage open zone resources function from ZBC,
but additionally add support for max active zones.
This enables user space not only to test against a device with an open
zone limit, but also to test against a device with an active zone limit.

The BDI_CAP_STABLE_WRITES is one of the few bits of information in the
backing_dev_info shared between the block drivers and the writeback code.
To help untangling the dependency replace it with a queue flag and a
superblock flag derived from it. This also helps with the case of e.g.
a file system requiring stable writes due to its own checksumming, but
not forcing it on other users of the block device like the swap code.
One downside is that we an't support the stable_pages_required bdi

decided if ->rw_page can be used on a block device. Just check up for
the method instead. The only complication is that zram needs a second
set of block_device_operations as it can switch between modes that
actually support ->rw_page and those who don't.

Drivers shouldn't really mess with the readahead size, as that is a VM
concept. Instead set it based on the optimal I/O size by lifting the
algorithm from the md driver when registering the disk. Also set
bdi->io_pages there as well by applying the same scheme based on
max_sectors. To ensure the limits work well for stacking drivers a
new helper is added to update the readahead limits from the block
limits, which is also called from disk_stack_limits.

can be created and deleted) by a UID 0 process even after it drops all

as long as UID 0 is mapped into that user namespace.
Be consistent with other virtual block devices (loop, nbd, dm, md, etc)

revalidate_disk is a relative awkward helper for driver use, as it first
calls an optional driver method and then updates the block device size,
while most callers either don't need the method call at all, or want to
keep state between the caller and the called method.
Add a revalidate_disk_size helper that just performs the update of the
block device size from the gendisk one, and switch all drivers that do
not implement ->revalidate_disk to use the new helper instead of

Two different callers use two different mutexes for updating the
block device size, which obviously doesn't help to actually protect
against concurrent updates from the different callers. In addition
one of the locks, bd_mutex is rather prone to deadlocks with other
parts of the block stack that use it for high level synchronization.
Switch to using a new spinlock protecting just the size updates, as
that is all we need, and make sure everyone does the update through
the proper helper.
This fixes a bug reported with the nvme revalidating disks during a
hot removal operation, which can currently deadlock on bd_mutex.

If we configured io timeout of nbd0 to 100s. Later after we
finished using it, we configured nbd0 again and set the io
timeout to 0. We expect it would timeout after 30 seconds
and keep retry. But in fact we could not change the timeout
when we set it to 0. the timeout is still the original 100s.
So change the timeout to default 30s when we set it to zero.
It also behaves same as commit 2da22da573 ("nbd: fix zero
cmd timeout handling v2").
It becomes more important if we were reconfigure a nbd device
and the io timeout it set to zero. Because it could take 30s
to detect the new socket and thus io could be completed more
quickly compared to 100s.

1f23816b8e ("virtio_blk: add discard and write zeroes support") starts
to support multi-range discard for virtio-blk. However, the virtio-blk
disk may report max discard segment as 1, at least that is exactly what
qemu is doing.
So far, block layer switches to normal request merge if max discard segment
limit is 1, and multiple bios can be merged to single segment. This way may
cause memory corruption in virtblk_setup_discard_write_zeroes().
Fix the issue by handling single max discard segment in straightforward
way.
