Gautham R Shenoy 51badebdcf powerpc/pseries: Serialize cpu hotplug operations during deactivate Vs deallocate
Currently the cpu-allocation/deallocation process comprises of two steps:
- Set the indicators and to update the device tree with DLPAR node
  information.

- Online/offline the allocated/deallocated CPU.

This is achieved by writing to the sysfs tunables "probe" during allocation
and "release" during deallocation.

At the sametime, the userspace can independently online/offline the CPUs of
the system using the sysfs tunable "online".

It is quite possible that when a userspace tool offlines a CPU
for the purpose of deallocation and is in the process of updating the device
tree, some other userspace tool could bring the CPU back online by writing to
the "online" sysfs tunable thereby causing the deallocate process to fail.

The solution to this is to serialize writes to the "probe/release" sysfs
tunable with the writes to the "online" sysfs tunable.

This patch employs a mutex to provide this serialization, which is a no-op on
all architectures except PPC_PSERIES

Nathan Fontenot 12633e803a sysfs/cpu: Add probe/release files
Version 3 of this patch is updated with documentation added to
Documentation/ABI. There are no changes to any of the C code from v2
of the patch.

In order to support kernel DLPAR of CPU resources we need to provide an
interface to add (probe) and remove (release) the resource from the system.
This patch Creates new generic probe and release sysfs files to facilitate
cpu probe/release. The probe/release interface provides for allowing each
arch to supply their own routines for implementing the backend of adding
and removing cpus to/from the system.

This also creates the powerpc specific stubs to handle the arch callouts
from writes to the sysfs files.

The creation and use of these files is regulated by the
CONFIG_ARCH_CPU_PROBE_RELEASE option so that only architectures that need the
capability will have the files created.

Alan Stern 63c9480170 PM / Runtime: Use deferred_resume flag in pm_request_resume
This patch (as1307) adds a small optimization to
__pm_request_resume(). If the device is currently being suspended,
there's no need to queue a work routine to resume it. Setting the
deferred_resume flag will suffice. (There's also a minor improvement
to the function's code layout: An unnecessary "else" is removed.)

Also, the patch clarifies the usage of the deferred_resume flag. It
is meaningful only while a suspend is in progress, so it should be
cleared just before a suspend starts, not just after one ends.

Alan Stern 862f89b3d4 PM: fix irq enable/disable in runtime PM code
This patch (as1305) fixes a bug in the irq-enable settings and removes
some related overhead in the runtime PM code.

In __pm_runtime_resume(), within the scope of the original
spin_lock_irq(), we know that irqs are disabled. There's no
reason to go through a pair of enable/disable cycles when
acquiring and releasing the parent's lock.

In __pm_runtime_set_status(), irqs are already disabled when

o kdump functionality reserves a per cpu area at boot time and exports the
physical address of that area to user space through sys interface. This
area stores some dump related information like cpu register states etc
  at the time of crash.

o We were assuming that per cpu area always come from linearly mapped meory

With percpu_alloc=page, per cpu area can come from vmalloc region also and

o This patch implments a new function to convert per cpu address to

Before the patch, crash_notes addresses looked as follows.

cpu0 60fffff49800

cpu0 13eb44000
cpu1 13eb43000
cpu2 13eb42000

the check was added for another driver to already claim the same device
on the same bus. But the returned error code was wrong: to modprobe, the
-EEXIST means that _this_ driver is already installed. It therefore

shmem = NR_ACTIVE_ANON + NR_INACTIVE_ANON - NR_ANON_PAGES

however the expression does not consider isolated and mlocked pages.

Kay Sievers 2b2af54a5b Driver Core: devtmpfs - kernel-maintained tmpfs-based /dev
Devtmpfs lets the kernel create a tmpfs instance called devtmpfs
very early at kernel initialization, before any driver-core device
is registered. Every device with a major/minor will provide a
device node in devtmpfs.

Devtmpfs can be changed and altered by userspace at any time,
and in any way needed - just like today's udev-mounted tmpfs.
Unmodified udev versions will run just fine on top of it, and will
recognize an already existing kernel-created device node and use it.
The default node permissions are root:root 0600. Proper permissions
and user/group ownership, meaningful symlinks, all other policy still
needs to be applied by userspace.

If a node is created by devtmps, devtmpfs will remove the device node
when the device goes away. If the device node was created by
userspace, or the devtmpfs created node was replaced by userspace, it
will no longer be removed by devtmpfs.

If it is requested to auto-mount it, it makes init=/bin/sh work
without any further userspace support. /dev will be fully populated
and dynamic, and always reflect the current device state of the kernel.
With the commonly used dynamic device numbers, it solves the problem
where static devices nodes may point to the wrong devices.

It is intended to make the initial bootup logic simpler and more robust,
by de-coupling the creation of the inital environment, to reliably run
userspace processes, from a complex userspace bootstrap logic to provide
a working /dev.

Jean Delvare 4622709445 Driver core: Add support for compatibility classes
When turning class devices into bus devices, we may need to
temporarily add links in sysfs so that user-space applications
are not confused. This is done by adding the following API:

* Functions to register and unregister compatibility classes.
These appear in sysfs at the same location as regular classes, but
instead of class devices, they contain links to bus devices.
* Functions to create and delete such links. Additionally, the caller
can optionally pass a target device to which a "device" link should
point (typically that would be the device's parent), to fully emulate
  the original class device.

The i2c subsystem will be the first user of this API, as i2c adapters
are being converted from class devices to bus devices.

Alan Stern 2023c610dc Driver core: add new device to bus's list before probing
This patch (as1271) affects when new devices get linked into their
bus's list of devices. Currently this happens after probing, and it
doesn't happen at all if probing fails. Clearly this is wrong,
because at that point quite a few symbolic links have already been
created in sysfs. We are committed to adding the device, so it should
be linked into the bus's list regardless.

In addition, this needs to happen before the uevent announcing the new
device gets issued. Otherwise user programs might try to access the
device before it has been added to the bus.

To fix both these problems, the patch moves the call to
klist_add_tail() forward from bus_attach_device() to bus_add_device().
Since bus_attach_device() now does nothing but probe for drivers, it
has been renamed to bus_probe_device(). And lastly, the kerneldoc is
updated.

Catalin Marinas 0f2f2221b4 Free struct device in fw_dev_release()
The f_dev in _request_firmware() is allocated via the fw_setup_device()
and fw_register_device() calls and its class set to firmware_class (the
class release function is fw_dev_release).

Commit 6acf70f078 replaced the kfree(dev) in fw_dev_release() with a
put_device() call but my understanding is that the release function is
called via put_device -> kobject_put -> kref_put -> koject_release etc.
and it should call kfree since it's the last to see this device
structure alive.

Because of that, the _request_firmware() function on its -ENOENT error
path only calls device_unregister(f_dev) which would eventually call
fw_dev_release() but there is no kfree (the subsequent put_device call
would just make the kref negative).

Alan Stern d161630297 PM core: rename suspend and resume functions
This patch (as1241) renames a bunch of functions in the PM core.
Rather than go through a boring list of name changes, suffice it to
say that in the end we have a bunch of pairs of functions:

	device_resume_noirq	dpm_resume_noirq
	device_resume dpm_resume
	device_complete dpm_complete
	device_suspend_noirq	dpm_suspend_noirq
	device_suspend dpm_suspend
	device_prepare dpm_prepare

in which device_X does the X operation on a single device and dpm_X
invokes device_X for all devices in the dpm_list.

In addition, the old dpm_power_up and device_resume_noirq have been
combined into a single function (dpm_resume_noirq).

Lastly, dpm_suspend_start and dpm_resume_end are the renamed versions
of the former top-level device_suspend and device_resume routines.

Rename the functions performing "_noirq" dev_pm_ops
operations from device_power_down() and device_power_up()

The new function names are chosen to show that the functions
are responsible for calling the _noirq() versions to finalize
the suspend/resume operation. The current function names do
not perform power down/up anymore so the names may be misleading.

Global function renames:
- device_power_down() -> device_suspend_noirq()
- device_power_up() -> device_resume_noirq()

Rafael J. Wysocki 32bdfac546 PM: Do not hold dpm_list_mtx while disabling/enabling nonboot CPUs
We shouldn't hold dpm_list_mtx while executing
[disable|enable]_nonboot_cpus(), because theoretically this may lead
to a deadlock as shown by the following example (provided by Johannes
Berg):

CPU 3 CPU 2 CPU 1
                                      suspend/hibernate
            something:
            rtnl_lock()               device_pm_lock()
                                       -> mutex_lock(&dpm_list_mtx)

            mutex_lock(&dpm_list_mtx)

linkwatch_work
 -> rtnl_lock()
                                      disable_nonboot_cpus()
                                       -> flush CPU 3 workqueue

Fortunately, device drivers are supposed to stop any activities that
might lead to the registration of new device objects way before
disable_nonboot_cpus() is called, so it shouldn't be necessary to
hold dpm_list_mtx over the entire late part of device suspend and
early part of device resume.

Thus, during the late suspend and the early resume of devices acquire
dpm_list_mtx only when dpm_list is going to be traversed and release
it right after that.

Greg Kroah-Hartman e67c85626c Revert driver core: move platform_data into platform_device
This reverts commit 006f4571a15fae3a0575f2a0f9e9b63b3d1012f8:

This patch moves platform_data from struct device into
struct platform_device, based on the two ideas:

	1. Now all platform_driver is registered by platform_driver_register,
which makes probe()/release()/... of platform_driver passed parameter
of platform_device *, so platform driver can get platform_data from
	   platform_device;

	2. Other kind of devices do not need to use platform_data, we can
decrease size of device if moving it to platform_device.

Taking into consideration of thousands of files to be fixed and they
can't be finished in one night(maybe it will take a long time), so we
keep platform_data in device to allow two kind of cases coexist until
all platform devices pass its platfrom data from
	platform_device->platform_data.

All patches to do this kind of conversion are welcome.

As we don't really want to do it, it was a bad idea.

all platform devices pass its specific data from platfom_device
and all platform drivers use platform specific data passed by
platform_device->platform_data. This kind of conversion will
need a long time, for thousands of files is affected.

To make the conversion easily, we allow platform specific data
passed by struct device or struct platform_device and platform
driver may use it from struct device or struct platform_device.

As we really don't want to do this at all.

Arjan van de Ven d4d5291c8c driver synchronization: make scsi_wait_scan more advanced
There is currently only one way for userspace to say "wait for my storage
device to get ready for the modules I just loaded": to load the
scsi_wait_scan module. Expectations of userspace are that once this
module is loaded, all the (storage) devices for which the drivers
were loaded before the module load are present.

Now, there are some issues with the implementation, and the async
stuff got caught in the middle of this: The existing code only
waits for the scsy async probing to finish, but it did not take
into account at all that probing might not have begun yet.
(Russell ran into this problem on his computer and the fix works for him)

This patch fixes this more thoroughly than the previous "fix", which
had some bad side effects (namely, for kernel code that wanted to wait for
the scsi scan it would also do an async sync, which would deadlock if you did
it from async context already.. there's a report about that on lkml):
The patch makes the module first wait for all device driver probes, and then it
will wait for the scsi parallel scan to finish.

Magnus Damm 13977091a9 Driver Core: early platform driver
V3 of the early platform driver implementation.

Platform drivers are great for embedded platforms because we can separate
driver configuration from the actual driver. So base addresses,
interrupts and other configuration can be kept with the processor or board
code, and the platform driver can be reused by many different platforms.

For early devices we have nothing today. For instance, to configure early
timers and early serial ports we cannot use platform devices. This
because the setup order during boot. Timers are needed before the
platform driver core code is available. The same goes for early printk
support. Early in this case means before initcalls.

These early drivers today have their configuration either hard coded or
they receive it using some special configuration method. This is working
quite well, but if we want to support both regular kernel modules and
early devices then we need to have two ways of configuring the same
driver. A single way would be better.

The early platform driver patch is basically a set of functions that allow
drivers to register themselves and architecture code to locate them and
probe. Registration happens through early_param(). The time for the
probe is decided by the architecture code.

See Documentation/driver-model/platform.txt for more details.

Rafael J. Wysocki 2ed8d2b3a8 PM: Rework handling of interrupts during suspend-resume
Use the functions introduced in by the previous patch,
suspend_device_irqs(), resume_device_irqs() and check_wakeup_irqs(),
to rework the handling of interrupts during suspend (hibernation) and
resume. Namely, interrupts will only be disabled on the CPU right
before suspending sysdevs, while device drivers will be prevented
from receiving interrupts, with the help of the new helper function,
before their "late" suspend callbacks run (and analogously during
resume).

In addition, since the device interrups are now disabled before the
CPU has turned all interrupts off and the CPU will ACK the interrupts
setting the IRQ_PENDING bit for them, check in sysdev_suspend() if
any wake-up interrupts are pending and abort suspend if that's the
case.

Ming Lei f67f129e51 Driver core: implement uevent suppress in kobject
This patch implements uevent suppress in kobject and removes it
from struct device, based on the following ideas:

1,Uevent sending should be one attribute of kobject, so suppressing it
in kobject layer is more natural than in device layer. By this way,
we can do it for other objects embedded with kobject.

2,It may save several bytes for each instance of struct device.(On my
omap3(32bit ARM) based box, can save 8bytes per device object)

This patch also introduces dev_set|get_uevent_suppress() helpers to
set and query uevent_suppress attribute in case to help kobject
as private part of struct device in future.

Ming Lei 006f4571a1 driver core: move platform_data into platform_device
This patch moves platform_data from struct device into
struct platform_device, based on the two ideas:

1. Now all platform_driver is registered by platform_driver_register,
which makes probe()/release()/... of platform_driver passed parameter
of platform_device *, so platform driver can get platform_data from
   platform_device;

2. Other kind of devices do not need to use platform_data, we can
decrease size of device if moving it to platform_device.

Taking into consideration of thousands of files to be fixed and they
can't be finished in one night(maybe it will take a long time), so we
keep platform_data in device to allow two kind of cases coexist until
all platform devices pass its platfrom data from
platform_device->platform_data.

All patches to do this kind of conversion are welcome.

Eric Miao 57fee4a58f platform: introduce module id table for platform devices
Now platform_device is being widely used on SoC processors where the
peripherals are attached to the system bus, which is simple enough.

However, silicon IPs for these SoCs are usually shared heavily across
a family of processors, even products from different companies. This
makes the original simple driver name based matching insufficient, or
simply not straight-forward.

Introduce a module id table for platform devices, and makes it clear
that a platform driver is able to support some shared IP and handle
slight differences across different platforms (by 'driver_data').
Module alias is handled automatically when a MODULE_DEVICE_TABLE()
is defined.

To not disturb the current platform drivers too much, the matched id
entry is recorded and can be retrieved by platform_get_device_id().

Ming Lei 49b420a13f driver core: check bus->match without holding device lock
This patch moves bus->match out from driver_probe_device and
does not hold device lock to check the match between a device
and a driver.

The idea has been verified by the commit 6cd4958609,
which leads to a faster boot. But the commit 6cd4958609 has
the following drawbacks: 1),only does the quick check in
the path of __driver_attach->driver_probe_device, not in other
paths; 2),for a matched device and driver, check the same match
twice. It is a waste of cpu ,especially for some drivers with long
device id table (eg. usb-storage driver).

This patch adds a helper of driver_match_device to check the match
in all paths, and testes the match only once.

Roel Kluin 4750498099 mm: get_nid_for_pfn() returns int
get_nid_for_pfn() returns int

Presumably the (nid < 0) case has never happened.

We do know that it is happening on one system while creating a symlink for
a memory section so it should also happen on the same system if
unregister_mem_sect_under_nodes() were called to remove the same symlink.

The test was actually added in response to a problem with an earlier
version reported by Yasunori Goto where one or more of the leading pages
of a memory section on the 2nd node of one of his systems was
uninitialized because I believe they coincided with a memory hole.

That earlier version did not ignore uninitialized pages and determined
the nid by considering only the 1st page of each memory section. This
caused the symlink to the 1st memory section on the 2nd node to be
incorrectly created in /sys/devices/system/node/node0 instead of
/sys/devices/system/node/node1. The problem was fixed by adding the
test to skip over uninitialized pages.

I suspect we have not seen any reports of the non-removal
of a symlink due to the incorrect declaration of the nid
variable in unregister_mem_sect_under_nodes() because
  - systems where a memory section could have an uninitialized
range of leading pages are probably rare.
  - memory remove is probably not done very frequently on the
systems that are capable of demonstrating the problem.
  - lingering symlink(s) that should have been removed may
    have simply gone unnoticed.

Roland Dreier 7143f7a1a3 driver core: Convert '/' to '!' in dev_set_name()
Commit 3ada8b7e ("block: struct device - replace bus_id with dev_name(),
dev_set_name()") deleted the code in register_disk() that changed a '/'
to a '!' in the device name when registering a disk, but dev_set_name()
does not perform this conversion.

This leads to amusing problems with disks that have '/' in their names:
for example a failure to boot with the root partition on a cciss device,
even though the kernel says it knows about the root device:

VFS: Cannot open root device "cciss/c0d0p6" or unknown-block(0,0)
Please append a correct "root=" boot option; here are the available partitions:
    6800 71652960 cciss/c0d0 driver: cciss
      6802 1 cciss/c0d0p2
      6805 2931831 cciss/c0d0p5
      6806 34354908 cciss/c0d0p6
    6810 71652960 cciss/c0d1 driver: cciss

Fix this by adding code to change '/' to '!' in dev_set_name() to handle
this until dev_set_name() is converted to use kobject_set_name().

David Miller b13d3720ec topology: Fix sparc64 build.
Due to changeset ba84be2338 ("remove
linux/hardirq.h from asm-generic/local.h") the sparc64 build started
failing on drivers/base/topology.c:

  drivers/base/topology.c: In function ‘show_physical_package_id’:
drivers/base/topology.c:103: error: implicit declaration of function ‘cpu_data’
drivers/base/topology.c:103: error: request for member ‘proc_id’ in something not a structure or union
  drivers/base/topology.c: In function ‘show_core_id’:
drivers/base/topology.c:106: error: request for member ‘core_id’ in something not a structure or union

Adding the obvious fix of including asm/cpudata.h into asm/topology.h on
sparc64 doesn't fix it, in fact it makes things worse because of the
header file dependency chain:

	linux/gfp.h --> linux/mmzone.h --> linux/topology.h -->
	asm/topology.h --> asm/cpudata.h --> linux/percpu.h -->
	linux/slab.h

which results in:

  include/linux/slub_def.h: In function ‘kmalloc_large’:
include/linux/slub_def.h:209: error: implicit declaration of function ‘__get_free_pages’
include/linux/slub_def.h:209: error: ‘__GFP_COMP’ undeclared (first use in this function)
include/linux/slub_def.h:209: error: (Each undeclared identifier is reported only once
include/linux/slub_def.h:209: error: for each function it appears in.)
include/linux/slub_def.h:209: warning: cast to pointer from integer of different size

The simplest thing to do is to add yet another one-off hack like parts
of the guilty changeset did, by putting an explicit linux/hardirq.h
include into drivers/base/topology.c

Gary Hade c04fc586c1 mm: show node to memory section relationship with symlinks in sysfs
Show node to memory section relationship with symlinks in sysfs

Add /sys/devices/system/node/nodeX/memoryY symlinks for all
the memory sections located on nodeX. For example:
/sys/devices/system/node/node1/memory135 -> ../../memory/memory135
indicates that memory section 135 resides on node1.

Also revises documentation to cover this change as well as updating
Documentation/ABI/testing/sysfs-devices-memory to include descriptions
of memory hotremove files 'phys_device', 'phys_index', and 'state'
that were previously not described there.

In addition to it always being a good policy to provide users with
the maximum possible amount of physical location information for
resources that can be hot-added and/or hot-removed, the following
are some (but likely not all) of the user benefits provided by
this change.
Immediate:
  - Provides information needed to determine the specific node
on which a defective DIMM is located. This will reduce system
downtime when the node or defective DIMM is swapped out.
  - Prevents unintended onlining of a memory section that was
previously offlined due to a defective DIMM. This could happen
during node hot-add when the user or node hot-add assist script
onlines _all_ offlined sections due to user or script inability
to identify the specific memory sections located on the hot-added
node. The consequences of reintroducing the defective memory
    could be ugly.
  - Provides information needed to vary the amount and distribution
of memory on specific nodes for testing or debugging purposes.
Future:
  - Will provide information needed to identify the memory
sections that need to be offlined prior to physical removal
    of a specific node.

Symlink creation during boot was tested on 2-node x86_64, 2-node
ppc64, and 2-node ia64 systems. Symlink creation during physical
memory hot-add tested on a 2-node x86_64 system.

Rafael J. Wysocki adf094931f PM: Simplify the new suspend/hibernation framework for devices
PM: Simplify the new suspend/hibernation framework for devices

Following the discussion at the Kernel Summit, simplify the new
device PM framework by merging 'struct pm_ops' and
'struct pm_ext_ops' and removing pointers to 'struct pm_ext_ops'
from 'struct platform_driver' and 'struct pci_driver'.

After this change, the suspend/hibernation callbacks will only
reside in 'struct device_driver' as well as at the bus type/
device class/device type level. Accordingly, PCI and platform
device drivers are now expected to put their suspend/hibernation
callbacks into the 'struct device_driver' embedded in
'struct pci_driver' or 'struct platform_driver', respectively.

Mike Travis e057d7aea9 cpumask: add sysfs displays for configured and disabled cpu maps
Impact: add new sysfs files.

Add sysfs files "kernel_max" and "offline" to display the max CPU index
allowed (NR_CPUS-1), and the map of cpus that are offline.

Cpus can be offlined via HOTPLUG, disabled by the BIOS ACPI tables, or
if they exceed the number of cpus allowed by the NR_CPUS config option,
or the "maxcpus=NUM" kernel start parameter.

The "possible_cpus=NUM" parameter can also extend the number of possible
cpus allowed, in which case the cpus not present at startup will be
in the offline state. (These cpus can be HOTPLUGGED ON after system
startup [pending a follow-on patch to provide the capability via the
/sys/devices/sys/cpu/cpuN/online mechanism to bring them online.])

By design, the "offlined cpus > possible cpus" display will always
use the following formats:

  * all possible cpus online: "x$" or "x-y$"
  * some possible cpus offline: ".*,x$" or ".*,x-y$"

where:
x == number of possible cpus (nr_cpu_ids); and
  y == number of cpus >= NR_CPUS or maxcpus (if y > x).

One use of this feature is for distros to select (or configure) the
appropriate kernel to install for the resident system.

Notes:
  * cpus offlined <= possible cpus will be printed for all architectures.
  * cpus offlined > possible cpus will only be printed for arches that
set 'total_cpus' [X86 only in this patch].

Rusty Russell 29c0177e6a cpumask: change cpumask_scnprintf, cpumask_parse_user, cpulist_parse, and cpulist_scnprintf to take pointers.

Most cpumask functions started with cpus_: these have been replaced by

Rik van Riel 4f98a2fee8 vmscan: split LRU lists into anon & file sets
Split the LRU lists in two, one set for pages that are backed by real file
systems ("file") and one for pages that are backed by memory and swap
("anon"). The latter includes tmpfs.

The advantage of doing this is that the VM will not have to scan over lots
of anonymous pages (which we generally do not want to swap out), just to
find the page cache pages that it should evict.

This patch has the infrastructure and a basic policy to balance how much
we scan the anon lists and how much we scan the file lists. The big
policy changes are in separate patches.

parisc's print_fn_descriptor_symbol() is currently broken there (it needs
to dereference the function pointer similar to ia64 and power). This
patch shouldn't make anything worse, but it means we need to fix
dereference_function_descriptor() instead of print_fn_descriptor_symbol()

Eric W. Biederman 030c1d2bfc kobject: Fix kobject_rename and !CONFIG_SYSFS
When looking at kobject_rename I found two bugs with
that exist when sysfs support is disabled in the kernel.

kobject_rename does not change the name on the kobject when
sysfs support is not compiled in.

kobject_rename without locking attempts to check the
validity of a rename operation, which the kobject layer
simply does not have the infrastructure to do.

This patch documents the previously unstated requirement of
kobject_rename that is the responsibility of the caller to
provide mutual exclusion and to be certain that the new_name
for the kobject is valid.

This patch modifies sysfs_rename_dir in !CONFIG_SYSFS case
to call kobject_set_name to actually change the kobject_name.

This patch removes the bogus and misleading check in kobject_rename
that attempts to see if a rename is valid. The check is bogus
because we do not have the proper locking. The check is misleading
because it looks like we can and do perform checking at the kobject
level that we don't.

Arjan van de Ven 6cd4958609 device model: Do a quickcheck for driver binding before doing an expensive check
This patch adds a quick check for the driver<->device match before
taking the locks and doin gthe expensive checks. Taking the lock hurts
in asynchronous boot context where the device lock gets hit; one of the
init functions takes the lock and goes to do an expensive hardware init;
the other init functions walk the same PCI list and get stuck on the
lock as a result.

For the common case, we can know there's no chance whatsoever of a match
if the device isn't in the drivers ID table... so this patch does that
check as a best-effort-avoid-the-lock approach.

Bootcharts for before and after can be seen at
http://www.fenrus.org/before.svg
http://www.fenrus.org/after.svg

Note the long time "agp_ali_init" takes in the first graph; my laptop
doesn't even have an ALI chip in it! (the bootgraphs look a bit
dissimilar, but that's the point, the first one has a bunch of arbitrary
delays in it that cause it to look very different)

This reduces my kernel boot time by about 20%

Rene Herman 00412be1d7 isa: set 24-bit dma_mask for ISA devices
dma_alloc_coherent() on x86 currently takes a passed in NULL device
pointer to mean that it should allocate an ISA compatible (24-bit) buffer
which is a bit of a hack.

The ALSA ISA drivers are the main consumers of this but have a struct
device in fact readily available.

For the legacy drivers, this sets the device dma_mask in preparation for
using the actual device with the DMA API so as to eventually not need the
NULL hack in dma_alloc_coherent().

This does not fix a current bug -- 2.6.26-rc1 stumbled over the NULL hack
in dma_alloc_coherent() but this has already been fixed in commit
4a367f3a9d by Takashi Iwai.

Badari Pulavarty 5c755e9fd8 memory-hotplug: add sysfs removable attribute for hotplug memory remove
Memory may be hot-removed on a per-memory-block basis, particularly on
POWER where the SPARSEMEM section size often matches the memory-block
size. A user-level agent must be able to identify which sections of
memory are likely to be removable before attempting the potentially
expensive operation. This patch adds a file called "removable" to the
memory directory in sysfs to help such an agent. In this patch, a memory
block is considered removable if;

o It contains only MOVABLE pageblocks
o It contains only pageblocks with free pages regardless of pageblock type

On the other hand, a memory block starting with a PageReserved() page will
never be considered removable. Without this patch, the user-agent is
forced to choose a memory block to remove randomly.

Sample output of the sysfs files:

Andi Kleen 9800794ac1 sysdev: Add utility functions for simple int/ulong variable sysdev attributes
This adds a new sysdev_ext_attribute that stores a pointer to the variable
it manages and some utility functions/macro to easily use them.

Previously all users wrote custom macros to generate show/store
functions for each variable, with this it is possible to avoid
that in many cases.

Andi Kleen 4a0b2b4dbe sysdev: Pass the attribute to the low level sysdev show/store function
This allow to dynamically generate attributes and share show/store
functions between attributes. Right now most attributes are generated
by special macros and lots of duplicated code. With the attribute
passed it's instead possible to attach some data to the attribute
and then use that in shared low level functions to do different things.

I need this for the dynamically generated bank attributes in the x86
machine check code, but it'll allow some further cleanups.

I converted all users in tree to the new show/store prototype. It's a single
huge patch to avoid unbisectable sections.

something we want sysfs to print a scary warning for, since the

Adrian Bunk d9b19199e4 always enable FW_LOADER unless EMBEDDED=y
James Bottomley recently discovered that we have
{request,release}_firmware() dummies for the case of the actual
functions not being available and has a fix for the bug that was
actually causing build errors for built-in users with
CONFIG_FW_LOADER=m.

But now missing selects on FW_LOADER are no longer visible at
compile-time at all and can become runtime problems.

FW_LOADER is infrastructure with relatively small codesize we can safely
enable for everyone, and only for people who really need small kernels
(and can be expected to know what they are doing) it matters being able
to disable it.

This patch therefore always sets FW_LOADER=y and allows users only to
disable it with EMBEDDED=y.

As a bonus, we can then get rid of all "select FW_LOADER" plus the due
to it required "depends on HOTPLUG" which removes some complexity from
our Kconfig files.

Ben Dooks 838ea8e8db sysdev: fix debugging statements in registration code.
The systdev_class_register() and sysdev_register() functions have
pr_debug() statements which are enabled when the user selects the
driver core debug. Both of these routines do not produce the
correct output, as they make assumptions about data which has not
been initialised.

In sysdev_class_register() the code uses the kobject_name(&cls->kset.kobj)
at the start of the function, but this is not setup until later in the
same call. Change this to use cls->name which is passed in from the caller.

The sysdev_register() function tries to get the name of the sysdev by
kobject_name(&sysdev->kobj), but that isn't setup until later in the same
function so change this message to use the name of the sysdev's class and
add another message once the name is initialised.

Dan Williams e105b8bfc7 sysfs: add /sys/dev/{char,block} to lookup sysfs path by major:minor
Why?:
There are occasions where userspace would like to access sysfs
attributes for a device but it may not know how sysfs has named the
device or the path. For example what is the sysfs path for
/dev/disk/by-id/ata-ST3160827AS_5MT004CK? With this change a call to
stat(2) returns the major:minor then userspace can see that
/sys/dev/block/8:32 links to /sys/block/sdc.

What are the alternatives?:
1/ Add an ioctl to return the path: Doable, but sysfs is meant to reduce
the need to proliferate ioctl interfaces into the kernel, so this
   seems counter productive.

2/ Use udev to create these symlinks: Also doable, but it adds a
udev dependency to utilities that might be running in a limited
   environment like an initramfs.

3/ Do a full-tree search of sysfs.

David Woodhouse 5658c76944 firmware: allow firmware files to be built into kernel image
Some drivers have their own hacks to bypass the kernel's firmware loader
and build their firmware into the kernel; this renders those unnecessary.

Other drivers don't use the firmware loader at all, because they always
want the firmware to be available. This allows them to start using the
firmware loader.

A third set of drivers already use the firmware loader, but can't be
used without help from userspace, which sometimes requires an initrd.
This allows them to work in a static kernel.

Mike Travis 23ca4bba3e x86: cleanup early per cpu variables/accesses v4
* Introduce a new PER_CPU macro called "EARLY_PER_CPU". This is
used by some per_cpu variables that are initialized and accessed
before there are per_cpu areas allocated.

["Early" in respect to per_cpu variables is "earlier than the per_cpu
    areas have been setup".]

This patchset adds these new macros:

	DEFINE_EARLY_PER_CPU(_type, _name, _initvalue)
	EXPORT_EARLY_PER_CPU_SYMBOL(_name)
	DECLARE_EARLY_PER_CPU(_type, _name)

	early_per_cpu_ptr(_name)
	early_per_cpu_map(_name, _idx)
	early_per_cpu(_name, _cpu)

The DEFINE macro defines the per_cpu variable as well as the early
map and pointer. It also initializes the per_cpu variable and map
elements to "_initvalue". The early_* macros provide access to
the initial map (usually setup during system init) and the early
pointer. This pointer is initialized to point to the early map
but is then NULL'ed when the actual per_cpu areas are setup. After
that the per_cpu variable is the correct access to the variable.

The early_per_cpu() macro is not very efficient but does show how to
access the variable if you have a function that can be called both
"early" and "late". It tests the early ptr to be NULL, and if not
then it's still valid. Otherwise, the per_cpu variable is used
    instead:

	#define early_per_cpu(_name, _cpu) 			\
		(early_per_cpu_ptr(_name) ? \
			early_per_cpu_ptr(_name)[_cpu] :	\
			per_cpu(_name, _cpu))

A better method is to actually check the pointer manually. In the
case below, numa_set_node can be called both "early" and "late":

void __cpuinit numa_set_node(int cpu, int node)
	{
	    int *cpu_to_node_map = early_per_cpu_ptr(x86_cpu_to_node_map);

	    if (cpu_to_node_map)
		    cpu_to_node_map[cpu] = node;
	    else
		    per_cpu(x86_cpu_to_node_map, cpu) = node;
	}

  * Add a flag "arch_provides_topology_pointers" that indicates pointers
to topology cpumask_t maps are available. Otherwise, use the function
returning the cpumask_t value. This is useful if cpumask_t set size
is very large to avoid copying data on to/off of the stack.

  * The coverage of CONFIG_DEBUG_PER_CPU_MAPS has been increased while
the non-debug case has been optimized a bit.

  * Remove an unreferenced compiler warning in drivers/base/topology.c

  * Clean up #ifdef in setup.c

* Introduce callback .sleep_wake() in struct pci_platform_pm_ops and
for the ACPI PCI 'driver' make it use acpi_pm_device_sleep_wake().

* Introduce callback .can_wakeup() in struct pci_platform_pm_ops and
for the ACPI 'driver' make it use acpi_bus_can_wakeup().

* Move the PME# handlig code out of pci_enable_wake() and split it
into two functions, pci_pme_capable() and pci_pme_active(),
allowing the caller to check if given device is capable of
generating PME# from given power state and to enable/disable the
  device's PME# functionality, respectively.

* Modify pci_enable_wake() to use the new ACPI callbacks and the new
  PME#-related functions.

* Drop the generic .platform_enable_wakeup() callback that is not
  used any more.

* Introduce device_set_wakeup_capable() that will set the
  power.can_wakeup flag of given device.

* Rework PCI device PM initialization so that, if given device is
capable of generating wake-up events, either natively through the
PME# mechanism, or with the help of the platform, its
power.can_wakeup flag is set and its power.should_wakeup flag is
  unset as appropriate.

* Make ACPI set the power.can_wakeup flag for devices found to be
  wake-up capable by it.

* Make the ACPI wake-up code enable/disable GPEs for devices that
have the wakeup.flags.prepared flag set (which means that their
  wake-up power has been enabled).

There is a bug in the output of /sys/devices/system/node/node[n]/meminfo

Looks like this occurred back in 2.6.20 when the code was changed

Ben Hutchings c50cbb05a0 cpu topology: always define CPU topology information
This can result in an empty topology directory in sysfs, and requires
in-kernel users to protect all uses with #ifdef - see
<http://marc.info/?l=linux-netdev&m=120639033904472&w=2>.

The documentation of CPU topology specifies what the defaults should be if
only partial information is available from the hardware. So we can
provide these defaults as a fallback.

This patch:

- Adds default definitions of the 4 topology macros to <linux/topology.h>
- Changes drivers/base/topology.c to use the topology macros unconditionally
and to cope with definitions that aren't lvalues
- Updates documentation accordingly

Rafael J. Wysocki d8f3de0d24 Suspend-related patches for 2.6.27
ACPI PM: Add possibility to change suspend sequence

There are some systems out there that don't work correctly with
our current suspend/hibernation code ordering. Provide a workaround
for these systems allowing them to pass 'acpi_sleep=old_ordering' in
the kernel command line so that it will use the pre-ACPI 2.0 ("old")
suspend code ordering.

Unfortunately, this requires us to add a platform hook to the
resuming of devices for recovering the platform in case one of the
device drivers' .suspend() routines returns error code. Namely,
ACPI 1.0 specifies that _PTS should be called before suspending
devices, but _WAK still should be called before resuming them in
order to undo the changes made by _PTS. However, if there is an
error during suspending devices, they are automatically resumed
without returning control to the PM core, so the _WAK has to be
called from within device_resume() in that cases.

The patch also reorders and refactors the ACPI suspend/hibernation
code to avoid duplication as far as reasonably possible.

Rafael J. Wysocki 1eede070a5 Introduce new top level suspend and hibernation callbacks
Introduce 'struct pm_ops' and 'struct pm_ext_ops' ('ext' meaning
'extended') representing suspend and hibernation operations for bus
types, device classes, device types and device drivers.

Modify the PM core to use 'struct pm_ops' and 'struct pm_ext_ops'
objects, if defined, instead of the ->suspend(), ->resume(),
->suspend_late(), and ->resume_early() callbacks (the old callbacks
will be considered as legacy and gradually phased out).

The main purpose of doing this is to separate suspend (aka S2RAM and
standby) callbacks from hibernation callbacks in such a way that the
new callbacks won't take arguments and the semantics of each of them
will be clearly specified. This has been requested for multiple
times by many people, including Linus himself, and the reason is that
within the current scheme if ->resume() is called, for example, it's
difficult to say why it's been called (ie. is it a resume from RAM or
from hibernation or a suspend/hibernation failure etc.?).

The second purpose is to make the suspend/hibernation callbacks more
flexible so that device drivers can handle more than they can within
the current scheme. For example, some drivers may need to prevent
new children of the device from being registered before their
->suspend() callbacks are executed or they may want to carry out some
operations requiring the availability of some other devices, not
directly bound via the parent-child relationship, in order to prepare
for the execution of ->suspend(), etc.

Ultimately, we'd like to stop using the freezing of tasks for suspend
and therefore the drivers' suspend/hibernation code will have to take
care of the handling of the user space during suspend/hibernation.
That, in turn, would be difficult within the current scheme, without
the new ->prepare() and ->complete() callbacks.

Miklos Szeredi fc3ba692a4 mm: Add NR_WRITEBACK_TEMP counter
Fuse will use temporary buffers to write back dirty data from memory mappings
(normal writes are done synchronously). This is needed, because there cannot
be any guarantee about the time in which a write will complete.

By using temporary buffers, from the MM's point if view the page is written
back immediately. If the writeout was due to memory pressure, this
effectively migrates data from a full zone to a less full zone.

This patch adds a new counter (NR_WRITEBACK_TEMP) for the number of pages used

device_pm_schedule_removal() and destroy_suspended_device() to allow
drivers to "safely" destroy a suspended device and we had adapted some
drivers to use them. Now that these functions are no longer necessary,
it seems reasonable to remove them and modify their users to use the
normal device unregistration instead.

Greg Kroah-Hartman 3f62e5700b Driver core: make device_is_registered() work for class devices
device_is_registered() can use the kobject value for this, so it will
now work with devices that are associated with only a class, not a bus
and a driver.

Alan Stern d288e47c47 PM: Make wakeup flags available whenever CONFIG_PM is set
The various wakeup flags and their accessor macros in struct
dev_pm_info should be available whenever CONFIG_PM is enabled, not
just when CONFIG_PM_SLEEP is on. Otherwise remote wakeup won't always
be configurable for runtime power management. This patch (as1056b)
fixes the oversight.

David Brownell adds:
More accurately, fixes the "regression" ... as noted sometime
	last summer, after 296699de6b
introduced CONFIG_SUSPEND. But that didn't make the regression
list for that kernel, ergo the delay in fixing it.
