When dealing with verbose Makefile output, it's extremely confusing when
compiler invocation commands don't specify -o <output.o> as the last
argument. Normalize bpftool's Makefile to do just that, as most other
BPF-related Makefiles are already doing that.

Bpftool is dual-licensed under GPLv2 and BSD-2-Clause. In commit
907b223651 ("tools: bpftool: dual license all files") we made sure
that all its source files were indeed covered by the two licenses, and
that they had the correct SPDX tags.
However, bpftool's Makefile, the Makefile for its documentation, and the
.gitignore file were skipped at the time (their GPL-2.0-only tag was
added later). Let's update the tags.

We recently changed bpftool's Makefile to make it install libbpf's
headers locally instead of pulling them from the source directory of the
library. Although bpftool needs two versions of libbpf, a "regular" one
and a "bootstrap" version, we would only install headers for the regular
libbpf build. Given that this build always occurs before the bootstrap
build when building bpftool, this is enough to ensure that the bootstrap
bpftool will have access to the headers exported through the regular
libbpf build.
However, this did not account for the case when we only want the
bootstrap version of bpftool, through the "bootstrap" target. For
example, perf needs the bootstrap version only, to generate BPF
skeletons. In that case, when are the headers installed? For some time,
the issue has been masked, because we had a step (the installation of
headers internal to libbpf) which would depend on the regular build of
libbpf and hence trigger the export of the headers, just for the sake of
creating a directory. But this changed with commit 8b6c46241c
("bpftool: Remove Makefile dep. on $(LIBBPF) for
$(LIBBPF_INTERNAL_HDRS)"), where we cleaned up that stage and removed
the dependency on the regular libbpf build. As a result, when we only
want the bootstrap bpftool version, the regular libbpf is no longer
built. The bootstrap libbpf version is built, but headers are not
exported, and the bootstrap bpftool build fails because of the missing
headers.
To fix this, we also install the library headers for the bootstrap
version of libbpf, to use them for the bootstrap bpftool and for
generating the skeletons.

To prepare for impending deprecation of libbpf's
bpf_program__get_prog_info_linear, migrate uses of this function to use
bpf_obj_get_info_by_fd.
Since the profile_target_name and dump_prog_id_as_func_ptr helpers were
only looking at the first func_info, avoid grabbing the rest to save a
malloc. For do_dump, add a more full-featured helper, but avoid
free/realloc of buffer when possible for multi-prog dumps.

In order to show PIDs and names for processes holding references to BPF
programs, maps, links, or BTF objects, bpftool creates hash maps to
store all relevant information. This commit is part of a set that
transitions from the kernel's hash map implementation to the one coming
with libbpf.
The motivation is to make bpftool less dependent of kernel headers, to
ease the path to a potential out-of-tree mirror, like libbpf has.
This is the third and final step of the transition, in which we convert
the hash maps used for storing the information about the processes
holding references to BPF objects (programs, maps, links, BTF), and at
last we drop the inclusion of tools/include/linux/hashtable.h.
Note: Checkpatch complains about the use of __weak declarations, and the
missing empty lines after the bunch of empty function declarations when
compiling without the BPF skeletons (none of these were introduced in
this patch). We want to keep things as they are, and the reports should
be safe to ignore.

BTF objects to store references to programs and maps, and convert them
to the libbpf's implementation.

In order to show pinned paths for BPF programs, maps, or links when
listing them with the "-f" option, bpftool creates hash maps to store
all relevant paths under the bpffs. So far, it would rely on the
kernel implementation (from tools/include/linux/hashtable.h).
We can make bpftool rely on libbpf's implementation instead. The
motivation is to make bpftool less dependent of kernel headers, to ease
the path to a potential out-of-tree mirror, like libbpf has.
This commit is the first step of the conversion: the hash maps for
pinned paths for programs, maps, and links are converted to libbpf's
hashmap.{c,h}. Other hash maps used for the PIDs of process holding
references to BPF objects are left unchanged for now. On the build side,
this requires adding a dependency to a second header internal to libbpf,
and making it a dependency for the bootstrap bpftool version as well.
The rest of the changes are a rather straightforward conversion.

BPF programs, maps, and links, can all be listed with their pinned paths
by bpftool, when the "-f" option is provided. To do so, bpftool builds
hash maps containing all pinned paths for each kind of objects.
These three hash maps are always initialised in main.c, and exposed
through main.h. There appear to be no particular reason to do so: we can
just as well make them static to the files that need them (prog.c,
map.c, and link.c respectively), and initialise them only when we want
to show objects and the "-f" switch is provided.
This may prevent unnecessary memory allocations if the implementation of
the hash maps was to change in the future.

The dependency is only useful to make sure that the $(LIBBPF_HDRS_DIR)
directory is created before we try to install locally the required
libbpf internal header. Let's create this directory properly instead.
This is in preparation of making $(LIBBPF_INTERNAL_HDRS) a dependency to
the bootstrap bpftool version, in which case we want no dependency on
$(LIBBPF).

Bpftool creates a new JSON object for writing program metadata in plain
text mode, regardless of metadata being present or not. Then this writer
is freed if any metadata has been found and printed, but it leaks
otherwise. We cannot destroy the object unconditionally, because the
destructor prints an undesirable line break. Instead, make sure the
writer is created only after we have found program metadata to print.
Found with valgrind.

It can happen that some data sections (e.g., .rodata.cst16, containing
compiler populated string constants) won't have a corresponding BTF
DATASEC type. Now that libbpf supports .rodata.* and .data.* sections,
situation like that will cause invalid BPF skeleton to be generated that
won't compile successfully, as some parts of skeleton would assume
memory-mapped struct definitions for each special data section.
Fix this by generating empty struct definitions for such data sections.

Remove the assumption about only single instance of each of .rodata and
.data internal maps. Nothing changes for '.rodata' and '.data' maps, but new
'.rodata.something' map will get 'rodata_something' section in BPF
skeleton for them (as well as having struct bpf_map * field in maps
section with the same field name).

The header is no longer needed since the event_pipe implementation
was updated to rely on libbpf's perf_buffer. This makes bpftool free of
dependencies to perf files, and we can update the Makefile accordingly.

One of bpftool's object files depends on zlib. To make sure we do not
attempt to build that object when the library is not available, commit
d66fa3c70e ("tools: bpftool: add feature check for zlib") introduced a
feature check to detect whether zlib is present.
This check comes as a rule for which the target ("zdep") is a
nonexistent file (phony target), which means that the Makefile always
attempts to rebuild it. It is mostly harmless. However, one side effect
is that, on running again once bpftool is already built, make considers
that "something" (the recipe for zdep) was executed, and does not print
the usual message "make: Nothing to be done for 'all'", which is a
user-friendly indicator that the build went fine.

In bpftool's Makefile, libbpf has a FORCE dependency, to make sure we
rebuild it in case its source files changed. Let's instead make the
rebuild depend on the source files directly, through a call to the
"$(wildcard ...)" function. This avoids descending into libbpf's
directory if there is nothing to update.
Do the same for the bootstrap libbpf version.
This results in a slightly faster operation and less verbose output when
running make a second time in bpftool's directory.

Other ways to clean up the output could be to pass the "-s" option, or
to redirect the output to >/dev/null, when calling make recursively to
descend into libbpf's directory. However, this would suppress some
useful output if something goes wrong during the build. A better
alternative would be to pass "--no-print-directory" to the recursive
make, but that would still leave us with some noise for
"install_headers". Skipping the descent into libbpf's directory if no
source file has changed works best, and seems the most logical option
overall.

We recently updated bpftool's Makefile to make it install the headers
from libbpf, instead of pulling them directly from libbpf's directory.
There is also an additional header, internal to libbpf, that needs be
installed. The way that bpftool's Makefile installs that particular
header is currently correct, but would break if we were to modify
$(LIBBPF_INTERNAL_HDRS) to make it point to more than one header.
Use a static pattern rule instead, so that the Makefile can withstand
the addition of other headers to install.
The objective is simply to make the Makefile more robust. It should
_not_ be read as an invitation to import more internal headers from
libbpf into bpftool.

Patch set [1] introduced BTF_KIND_TAG to allow tagging
declarations for struct/union, struct/union field, var, func
and func arguments and these tags will be encoded into
dwarf. They are also encoded to btf by llvm for the bpf target.
After BTF_KIND_TAG is introduced, we intended to use it
for kernel __user attributes. But kernel __user is actually
a type attribute. Upstream and internal discussion showed
it is not a good idea to mix declaration attribute and
type attribute. So we proposed to introduce btf_type_tag
as a type attribute and existing btf_tag renamed to
btf_decl_tag ([2]).
This patch renamed BTF_KIND_TAG to BTF_KIND_DECL_TAG and some
other declarations with *_tag to *_decl_tag to make it clear
the tag is for declaration. In the future, BTF_KIND_TYPE_TAG
might be introduced per [3].

With "make install", bpftool installs its binary and its bash completion
file. Usually, this is what we want. But a few components in the kernel
repository (namely, BPF iterators and selftests) also install bpftool
locally before using it. In such a case, bash completion is not
necessary and is just a useless build artifact.
Let's add an "install-bin" target to bpftool, to offer a way to install
the binary only.

API headers from libbpf should not be accessed directly from the
library's source directory. Instead, they should be exported with "make
install_headers". Let's make sure that runqslower installs the
headers properly when building.
We use a libbpf_hdrs target to mark the logical dependency on libbpf's
headers export for a number of object files, even though the headers
should have been exported at this time (since bpftool needs them, and is
required to generate the skeleton or the vmlinux.h).
When descending from a parent Makefile, the specific output directories
for building the library and exporting the headers are configurable with
BPFOBJ_OUTPUT and BPF_DESTDIR, respectively. This is in addition to
OUTPUT, on top of which those variables are constructed by default.
Also adjust the Makefile for the BPF selftests. We pass a number of
variables to the "make" invocation, because we want to point runqslower
to the (target) libbpf shared with other tools, instead of building its
own version. In addition, runqslower relies on (target) bpftool, and we
also want to pass the proper variables to its Makefile so that bpftool
itself reuses the same libbpf.

Bpftool relies on libbpf, therefore it relies on a number of headers
from the library and must be linked against the library. The Makefile
for bpftool exposes these objects by adding tools/lib as an include
directory ("-I$(srctree)/tools/lib"). This is a working solution, but
this is not the cleanest one. The risk is to involuntarily include
objects that are not intended to be exposed by the libbpf.
The headers needed to compile bpftool should in fact be "installed" from
libbpf, with its "install_headers" Makefile target. In addition, there
is one header which is internal to the library and not supposed to be
used by external applications, but that bpftool uses anyway.
Adjust the Makefile in order to install the header files properly before
compiling bpftool. Also copy the additional internal header file
(nlattr.h), but call it out explicitly. Build (and install headers) in a
subdirectory under bpftool/ instead of tools/lib/bpf/. When descending
from a parent Makefile, this is configurable by setting the OUTPUT,
LIBBPF_OUTPUT and LIBBPF_DESTDIR variables.
Also adjust the Makefile for BPF selftests, so as to reuse the (host)
libbpf compiled earlier and to avoid compiling a separate version of the
library just for bpftool.

This commit allows specifying the base BTF for resolving btf id
lists/sets during link time in the resolve_btfids tool. The base BTF is
set to NULL if no path is passed. This allows resolving BTF ids for
module kernel objects.
Also, drop the --no-fail option, as it is only used in case .BTF_ids
section is not present, instead make no-fail the default mode. The long
option name is same as that of pahole.

Added bpftool support to dump BTF_KIND_TAG information.
The new bpftool will be used in later patches to dump
btf in the test bpf program object file.
Currently, the tags are not emitted with
bpftool btf dump file <path> format c
and they are silently ignored. The tag information is
mostly used in the kernel for verification purpose and the kernel
uses its own btf to check. With adding these tags
to vmlinux.h, tags will be encoded in program's btf but
they will not be used by the kernel, at least for now.
So let us delay adding these tags to format C header files
until there is a real need.

Turn previously auto-generated libbpf_version.h header into a normal
header file. This prevents various tricky Makefile integration issues,
simplifies the overall build process, but also allows to further extend
it with some more versioning-related APIs in the future.
To prevent accidental out-of-sync versions as defined by libbpf.map and
libbpf_version.h, Makefile checks their consistency at build time.
Simultaneously with this change bump libbpf.map to v0.6.
Also undo adding libbpf's output directory into include path for
kernel/bpf/preload, bpftool, and resolve_btfids, which is not necessary
because libbpf_version.h is just a normal header like any other.

Introduce a macro LIBBPF_DEPRECATED_SINCE(major, minor, message) to prepare
the deprecation of two API functions. This macro marks functions as deprecated
when libbpf's version reaches the values passed as an argument.
As part of this change libbpf_version.h header is added with recorded major
(LIBBPF_MAJOR_VERSION) and minor (LIBBPF_MINOR_VERSION) libbpf version macros.
They are now part of libbpf public API and can be relied upon by user code.
libbpf_version.h is installed system-wide along other libbpf public headers.
Due to this new build-time auto-generated header, in-kernel applications
relying on libbpf (resolve_btfids, bpftool, bpf_preload) are updated to
include libbpf's output directory as part of a list of include search paths.
Better fix would be to use libbpf's make_install target to install public API
headers, but that clean up is left out as a future improvement. The build
changes were tested by building kernel (with KBUILD_OUTPUT and O= specified
explicitly), bpftool, libbpf, selftests/bpf, and resolve_btfids builds. No
problems were detected.
Note that because of the constraints of the C preprocessor we have to write
a few lines of macro magic for each version used to prepare deprecation (0.6
for now).
Also, use LIBBPF_DEPRECATED_SINCE() to schedule deprecation of
btf__get_from_id() and btf__load(), which are replaced by
btf__load_from_kernel_by_id() and btf__load_into_kernel(), respectively,
starting from future libbpf v0.6. This is part of libbpf 1.0 effort ([0]).

This adds a skeleton method X__elf_bytes() which returns the binary data of
the compiled and embedded BPF object file. It additionally sets the size of
the return data to the provided size_t pointer argument.
The assignment to s->data is cast to void * to ensure no warning is issued if
compiled with a previous version of libbpf where the bpf_object_skeleton field
is void * instead of const void *

two new metrics, namely itlb_misses and dtlb_misses (misses for the
instruction/data translation lookaside buffer). Update the manual page

The -L|--use-loader option for using loader programs when loading, or
when generating a skeleton, did not have any documentation or bash
completion. Same thing goes for -B|--base-btf, used to pass a path to a
base BTF object for split BTF such as BTF for kernel modules.
This patch documents and adds bash completion for those options.

All bpftool commands support the options for JSON output and debug from
libbpf. In addition, some commands support additional options
corresponding to specific use cases.
The list of options described in the man pages for the different
commands are not always accurate. The messages for interactive help are
mostly limited to HELP_SPEC_OPTIONS, and are even less representative of
the actual set of options supported for the commands.
Let's update the lists:
- HELP_SPEC_OPTIONS is modified to contain the "default" options (JSON
and debug), and to be extensible (no ending curly bracket).
- All commands use HELP_SPEC_OPTIONS in their help message, and then
complete the list with their specific options.
- The lists of options in the man pages are updated.
- The formatting of the list for bpftool.rst is adjusted to match
formatting for the other man pages. This is for consistency, and also
because it will be helpful in a future patch to automatically check
that the files are synchronised.

attach types, or the "ringbuf" map. Also update the documentation, help
messages, and bash completion when relevant.

Bash completion for bpftool gets two minor improvements in this patch.
Move the detection of attach types for "bpftool cgroup attach" outside
of the "case/esac" bloc, where we cannot reuse our variable holding the
list of supported attach types as a pattern list. After the change, we
have only one list of cgroup attach types to update when new types are
added, instead of the former two lists.
Also rename the variables holding lists of names for program types, map
types, and attach types, to make them more unique. This can make it
slightly easier to point people to the relevant variables to update, but
the main objective here is to help run a script to check that bash
completion is up-to-date with bpftool's source code.

Split BTF objects are typically BTF objects for kernel modules, which
are incrementally built on top of kernel BTF instead of redefining all
kernel symbols they need. We can use bpftool with its -B command-line
option to dump split BTF objects. It works well when the handle provided
for the BTF object to dump is a "path" to the BTF object, typically
under /sys/kernel/btf, because bpftool internally calls
btf__parse_split() which can take a "base_btf" pointer and resolve the
BTF reconstruction (although in that case, the "-B" option is
unnecessary because bpftool performs autodetection).
However, it did not work so far when passing the BTF object through its
id, because bpftool would call btf__get_from_id() which did not provide
a way to pass a "base_btf" pointer.
In other words, the following works:
# bpftool btf dump file /sys/kernel/btf/i2c_smbus -B /sys/kernel/btf/vmlinux
But this was not possible:
# bpftool btf dump id 6 -B /sys/kernel/btf/vmlinux
The libbpf API has recently changed, and btf__get_from_id() has been
deprecated in favour of btf__load_from_kernel_by_id() and its version
with support for split BTF, btf__load_from_kernel_by_id_split(). Let's
update bpftool to make it able to dump the BTF object in the second case
as well.

Replace the calls to function btf__get_from_id(), which we plan to
deprecate before the library reaches v1.0, with calls to
btf__load_from_kernel_by_id() in tools/ (bpftool, perf, selftests).
Update the surrounding code accordingly (instead of passing a pointer to
the btf struct, get it as a return value from the function).

Kernel functions referenced by .BTF_ids may be changed from global to static
and get inlined or get renamed/removed, and thus disappears from BTF.
This causes kernel build failure when resolve_btfids do id patch for symbols
in .BTF_ids in vmlinux. Update resolve_btfids to emit warning messages and
patch zero id for missing symbols instead of aborting kernel build process.

The vmlinux ".BTF_ids" ELF section is declared in btf_ids.h to hold a list
of zero-filled BTF IDs, which is then patched at link-time with correct
values by resolv_btfids. The section is flagged as "allocable" to preclude
compression, but notably the section contents (BTF IDs) are untyped.
When patching the BTF IDs, resolve_btfids writes in host-native endianness
and relies on libelf for any required translation on reading and updating
vmlinux. However, since the type of the .BTF_ids section content defaults
to ELF_T_BYTE (i.e. unsigned char), no translation occurs. This results in
incorrect patched values when cross-compiling to non-native endianness,
and can manifest as kernel Oops and test failures which are difficult to
troubleshoot [1].
Explicitly set the type of patched data to ELF_T_WORD, the architecture-
neutral ELF type corresponding to the u32 BTF IDs. This enables libelf to
transparently perform any needed endian conversions.

When the bootstrap and final bpftool have different architectures, we
need to build two distinct disasm.o objects. Add a recipe for the
bootstrap disasm.o.
After commit d510296d33 ("bpftool: Use syscall/loader program in
"prog load" and "gen skeleton" command.") cross-building bpftool didn't
work anymore, because the bootstrap bpftool was linked using objects
from different architectures:

The final bpftool was built for e.g. arm64, while the bootstrap bpftool,
executed on the host, was built for x86. The problem here was that disasm.o
linked into the bootstrap bpftool was arm64 rather than x86. With the fix
we build two disasm.o, one for the target bpftool in arm64, and one for
the bootstrap bpftool in x86.

Follow libbpf's error handling conventions and pass through errors and errno
properly. Skeleton code always returned NULL on errors (not ERR_PTR(err)), so
there are no backwards compatibility concerns. But now we also set errno
properly, so it's possible to distinguish different reasons for failure, if
necessary.

Add -L flag to bpftool to use libbpf gen_trace facility and syscall/loader program
for skeleton generation and program loading.
"bpftool gen skeleton -L" command will generate a "light skeleton" or "loader skeleton"
that is similar to existing skeleton, but has one major difference:

The light skeleton does not use majority of libbpf infrastructure.
It doesn't need libelf. It doesn't parse .o file.
It only needs few sys_bpf wrappers. All of them are in bpf/bpf.h file.
In future libbpf/bpf.c can be inlined into bpf.h, so not even libbpf.a would be
needed to work with light skeleton.
"bpftool prog load -L file.o" command is introduced for debugging of syscall/loader
program generation. Just like the same command without -L it will try to load
the programs from file.o into the kernel. It won't even try to pin them.
"bpftool prog load -L -d file.o" command will provide additional debug messages
on how syscall/loader program was generated.
Also the execution of syscall/loader program will use bpf_trace_printk() for
each step of loading BTF, creating maps, and loading programs.

As discussed in [0], stop emitting static variables in BPF skeletons to avoid
issues with name-conflicting static variables across multiple
statically-linked BPF object files.
Users using static variables to pass data between BPF programs and user-space
should do a trivial one-time switch according to the following simple rules:
- read-only `static volatile const` variables should be converted to
`volatile const`;
- read/write `static volatile` variables should just drop `static volatile`
modifiers to become global variables/symbols. To better handle older Clang
versions, such newly converted global variables should be explicitly
initialized with a specific value or `= 0`/`= {}`, whichever is
appropriate.

For better future extensibility add per-file linker options. Currently
the set of available options is empty. This changes bpf_linker__add_file()
API, but it's not a breaking change as bpf_linker APIs hasn't been released
yet.

Dump succinct information for each member of DATASEC: its kinds and name. This
is extremely helpful to see at a quick glance what is inside each DATASEC of
a given BTF. Without this, one has to jump around BTF data to just find out
the name of a VAR or FUNC. DATASEC's var_secinfo member is special in that
regard because it doesn't itself contain the name of the member, delegating
that to the referenced VAR and FUNC kinds. Other kinds, like
STRUCT/UNION/FUNC/ENUM, encode member names directly and thus are clearly
identifiable in BTF dump.
The new output looks like this:

internals. Let us add an explicit type conversion (from "int" to "unsigned int")
for "len" in NLMSG_OK to silence this warning right now.

Reusing BPF_SK_SKB_STREAM_VERDICT is possible but its name is
confusing and more importantly we still want to distinguish them
from user-space. So we can just reuse the stream verdict code but
introduce a new type of eBPF program, skb_verdict. Users are not
allowed to attach stream_verdict and skb_verdict programs to the
same map.

Add `bpftool gen object <output-file> <input_file>...` command to statically
link multiple BPF ELF object files into a single output BPF ELF object file.
This patch also updates bash completions and man page. Man page gets a short
section on `gen object` command, but also updates the skeleton example to show
off workflow for BPF application with two .bpf.c files, compiled individually
with Clang, then resulting object files are linked together with `gen object`,
and then final object file is used to generate usable BPF skeleton. This
should help new users understand realistic workflow w.r.t. compiling
mutli-file BPF application.

Replace hashtab with task local storage in runqslower. This improves the
performance of these BPF programs. The following table summarizes average
runtime of these programs, in nanoseconds:
task-local hash-prealloc hash-no-prealloc
handle__sched_wakeup 125 340 3124
handle__sched_wakeup_new 2812 1510 2998
handle__sched_switch 151 208 991
Note that, task local storage gives better performance than hashtab for
handle__sched_wakeup and handle__sched_switch. On the other hand, for
handle__sched_wakeup_new, task local storage is slower than hashtab with
prealloc. This is because handle__sched_wakeup_new accesses the data for
the first time, so it has to allocate the data for task local storage.
Once the initial allocation is done, subsequent accesses, as those in
handle__sched_wakeup, are much faster with task local storage. If we
disable hashtab prealloc, task local storage is much faster for all 3
functions.

Older libelf.h and glibc elf.h might not yet define the ELF compression
types.
Checking and defining SHF_COMPRESSED fix the build error when compiling
with older toolchains. Also, the tool resolve_btfids is compiled with host
toolchain. The host toolchain is more likely to be older than the cross
compile toolchain.

We want this clean to be called from tree's root Makefile,
which defines same srctree variable and that will screw
the make setup.
We actually do not use srctree being passed from outside,
so we can solve this by setting current srctree value
directly.
Also changing the way how srctree is initialized as suggested
by Andrri.
Also root Makefile does not define the implicit RM variable,
so adding RM initialization.

and that one is silent if there's nothing to clean.

Setting up separate build directories for libbpf and libpsubcmd,
so it's separated from other objects and we don't get them mixed
in the future.
It also simplifies cleaning, which is now simple rm -rf.
Also there's no need for FEATURE-DUMP.libbpf and bpf_helper_defs.h
files in .gitignore anymore.

When dealing with BPF/BTF/pahole and DWARF v5 I wanted to build bpftool.
While looking into the source code I found duplicate assignments in misc tools
for the LLVM eco system, e.g. clang and llvm-objcopy.
Move the Clang, LLC and/or LLVM utils definitions to tools/scripts/Makefile.include
file and add missing includes where needed. Honestly, I was inspired by the commit
c8a950d0d3 ("tools: Factor HOSTCC, HOSTLD, HOSTAR definitions").
I tested with bpftool and perf on Debian/testing AMD64 and LLVM/Clang v11.1.0-rc1.

The issue was fixed in kernel headers in [1], but since compilation
of net.c picks up system headers the problem can recur.

The kernel image can contain multiple types (structs/unions)
with the same name. This causes distinct type hierarchies in
BTF data and makes resolve_btfids fail with error like:
BTFIDS vmlinux
FAILED unresolved symbol udp6_sock
as reported by Qais Yousef [1].
This change adds warning when multiple types of the same name
are detected:

We keep the lower ID for the given type instance and let the
build continue.

xdp_return_frame_bulk() needs to pass a xdp_buff
to __xdp_return().
strlcpy got converted to strscpy but here it makes no
functional difference, so just keep the right code.

In case of having so many PID results that they don't fit into a singe page
(4096) bytes, bpftool will erroneously conclude that it got corrupted data due
to 4096 not being a multiple of struct pid_iter_entry, so the last entry will
be partially truncated. Fix this by sizing the buffer to fit exactly N entries
with no truncation in the middle of record.

Commit 47c09d6a9f67("bpftool: Introduce "prog profile" command")
introduced "bpftool prog profile" command which can be used
to profile bpf program with metrics like # of instructions,
This patch added support for itlb_misses and dtlb_misses.
During an internal bpf program performance evaluation,
I found these two metrics are also very useful. The following
is an example output:

Commit ba2fd563b7 ("tools/bpftool: Support passing BPFTOOL_VERSION to
make") changed BPFTOOL_VERSION to a recursively expanded variable,
forcing it to be recomputed on every expansion of CFLAGS and
dramatically slowing down the bpftool build. Restore BPFTOOL_VERSION as
a simply expanded variable, guarded by an ifeq().

When cross building runqslower for an other architecture, the
intermediate bpftool used to generate a skeleton must be built using the
host toolchain. Pass HOSTCC and HOSTLD, defined in Makefile.include, to
the bpftool Makefile.

The bpftool build first creates an intermediate binary, executed on the
host, to generate skeletons required by the final build. When
cross-building bpftool for an architecture different from the host, the
intermediate binary should be built using the host compiler (gcc) and
the final bpftool using the cross compiler (e.g. aarch64-linux-gnu-gcc).
Generate the intermediate objects into the bootstrap/ directory using
the host toolchain.

Cleaning a partial build can fail if the output directory for libbpf
wasn't created:

tools/scripts/Makefile.include:17: *** output directory "/tmp/bpf/libbpf/" does not exist. Stop.

As a result make never gets around to clearing the leftover objects. Add
the libbpf output directory as clean dependency to ensure clean always
succeeds (similarly to the "descend" macro). The directory is later
removed by the clean recipe.

Display vmlinux BTF name and kernel module names when listing available BTFs
on the system.
In human-readable output mode, module BTFs are reported with "name
[module-name]", while vmlinux BTF will be reported as "name [vmlinux]".
Square brackets are added by bpftool and follow kernel convention when
displaying modules in human-readable text outputs.

In JSON mode, two fields (boolean "kernel" and string "name") are reported for
each BTF object. vmlinux BTF is reported with name "vmlinux" (kernel itself
returns and empty name for vmlinux BTF).

My earlier patch to reject non-zero arguments to flow dissector attach
broke attaching via bpftool. Instead of 0 it uses -1 for target_fd.
Fix this by passing a zero argument when attaching the flow dissector.

The bpf_caps array is shorter without CAP_BPF, avoid out of bounds reads
if this isn't defined. Working around this avoids -Wno-array-bounds with

Rejecting non-native endian BTF overlapped with the addition
of support for it.
The rest were more simple overlapping changes, except the
renesas ravb binding update, which had to follow a file

Two minor conflicts:
1) net/ipv4/route.c, adding a new local variable while
moving another local variable and removing it's
initial assignment.
2) drivers/net/dsa/microchip/ksz9477.c, overlapping changes.
One pretty prints the port mode differently, whilst another
changes the driver to try and obtain the port mode from
the port node rather than the switch node.

This change facilitates out-of-tree builds, packaging, and versioning for
test and debug purposes. Defining BPFTOOL_VERSION allows self-contained
builds within the tools tree, since it avoids use of the 'kernelversion'
target in the top-level makefile, which would otherwise pull in several
other includes from outside the tools tree.

Dump metadata in the 'bpftool prog' list if it's present.
For some formatting some BTF code is put directly in the
metadata dumping. Sanity checks on the map and the kind of the btf_type
to make sure we are actually dumping what we are expecting.
A helper jsonw_reset is added to json writer so we can reuse the same
json writer without having extraneous commas.
Sample output:

The "SEE ALSO" sections of bpftool's manual pages refer to bpf(2),
bpf-helpers(7), then all existing bpftool man pages (save the current
one).
This leads to nearly-identical lists being duplicated in all manual
pages. Ideally, when a new page is created, all lists should be updated
accordingly, but this has led to omissions and inconsistencies multiple
times in the past.
Let's take it out of the RST files and generate the "SEE ALSO" sections
automatically in the Makefile when generating the man pages. The lists
are not really useful in the RST anyway because all other pages are
available in the same directory.

There is no support for creating maps of types array-of-map or
hash-of-map in bpftool. This is because the kernel needs an inner_map_fd
to collect metadata on the inner maps to be supported by the new map,
but bpftool does not provide a way to pass this file descriptor.
Add a new optional "inner_map" keyword that can be used to pass a
reference to a map, retrieve a fd to that map, and pass it as the
inner_map_fd.
Add related documentation and bash completion. Note that we can
reference the inner map by its name, meaning we can have several times
the keyword "name" with different meanings (mandatory outer map name,
and possibly a name to use to find the inner_map_fd). The bash
completion will offer it just once, and will not suggest "name" on the
following command:
# bpftool map create /sys/fs/bpf/my_outer_map type hash_of_maps \
inner_map name my_inner_map [TAB]
Fixing that specific case seems too convoluted. Completion will work as
expected, however, if the outer map name comes first and the "inner_map
name ..." is passed second.

When dumping outer maps or prog_array maps, and on lookup failure,
bpftool simply skips the entry with no error message. This is because
the kernel returns non-zero when no value is found for the provided key,
which frequently happen for those maps if they have not been filled.
When such a case occurs, errno is set to ENOENT. It seems unlikely we
could receive other error codes at this stage (we successfully retrieved
map info just before), but to be on the safe side, let's skip the entry
only if errno was ENOENT, and not for the other errors.

The function used to dump a map entry in bpftool is a bit difficult to
follow, as a consequence to earlier refactorings. There is a variable
("num_elems") which does not appear to be necessary, and the error
handling would look cleaner if moved to its own function. Let's clean it
up. No functional change.

- v1 was erroneously removing the check on fd maps in an attempt to get
support for outer map dumps. This is already working. Instead, v2
focuses on cleaning up the dump_map_elem() function, to avoid
similar confusion in the future.

Nearly all man pages for bpftool have the same common set of option
flags (--help, --version, --json, --pretty, --debug). The description is
duplicated across all the pages, which is more difficult to maintain if
the description of an option changes. It may also be confusing to sort
out what options are not "common" and should not be copied when creating
new manual pages.
Let's move the description for those common options to a separate file,
which is included with a RST directive when generating the man pages.

Bpftool has a number of features that can be included or left aside
during compilation. This includes:
- Support for libbfd, providing the disassembler for JIT-compiled
programs.
- Support for BPF skeletons, used for profiling programs or iterating on
the PIDs of processes associated with BPF objects.
In order to make it easy for users to understand what features were
compiled for a given bpftool binary, print the status of the two
features above when showing the version number for bpftool ("bpftool -V"
or "bpftool version"). Document this in the main manual page. Example
invocations:

Some other parameters are optional at compilation
("DISASM_FOUR_ARGS_SIGNATURE", LIBCAP support) but they do not impact
significantly bpftool's behaviour from a user's point of view, so their
status is not reported.
Available commands and supported program types depend on the version
number, and are therefore not reported either. Note that they are
already available, albeit without JSON, via bpftool's help messages.

To build man pages for bpftool (and for eBPF helper functions), rst2man
can log different levels of information. Let's make it log all levels
to keep the RST files clean.
Doing so, rst2man complains about double colons, used for literal
blocks, that look like underlines for section titles. Let's add the
necessary blank lines.

The new resolve_btfids tool did not clean up the feature detection folder
on 'make clean', and also was not called properly from the clean rule in
tools/make/ folder on its 'make clean'. This lead to stale objects being
left around, which could cause feature detection to fail on subsequent
builds.

The system for "Auto-detecting system features" located under
tools/build/ are (currently) used by perf, libbpf and bpftool. It can
contain stalled feature detection files, which are not cleaned up by
libbpf and bpftool on make clean (side-note: perf tool is correct).
Fix this by making the users invoke the make clean target.
Some details about the changes. The libbpf Makefile already had a
clean-config target (which seems to be copy-pasted from perf), but this
target was not "connected" (a make dependency) to clean target. Choose
not to rename target as someone might be using it. Did change the output
from "CLEAN config" to "CLEAN feature-detect", to make it more clear
what happens.

Similar to bpf_local_storage for sockets, add local storage for inodes.
The life-cycle of storage is managed with the life-cycle of the inode.
i.e. the storage is destroyed along with the owning inode.
The BPF LSM allocates an __rcu pointer to the bpf_local_storage in the
security blob which are now stackable and can co-exist with other LSMs.

The link query for bpf iterators is implemented.
Besides being shown to the user what bpf iterator
the link represents, the target_name is also used
to filter out what additional information should be
printed out, e.g., whether map_id should be shown or not.

Most netlink-related functions were unique to bpftool usage, so I moved them
into net.c. Few functions are still used by both bpftool and libbpf itself
internally, so I've copy-pasted them (libbpf_nl_get_link,
libbpf_netlink_open). It's a bit of duplication of code, but better separation
of libbpf as a library with public API and bpftool, relying on unexposed
functions in libbpf.

Seems like C++17 standard mode doesn't recognize typeof() anymore. This can
be tested by compiling test_cpp test with -std=c++17 or -std=c++1z options.
The use of typeof in skeleton generated code is unnecessary, all types are
well-known at the time of code generation, so remove all typeof()'s to make
skeleton code more future-proof when interacting with C++ compilers.

For probing program and map types, bpftool loops on type values and uses
the relevant type name in prog_type_name[] or map_type_name[]. To ensure
the name exists, we exit from the loop if we go over the size of the
array.
However, this is not enough in the case where the arrays have "holes" in
them, program or map types for which they have no name, but not at the
end of the list. This is currently the case for BPF_PROG_TYPE_LSM, not
known to bpftool and which name is a null string. When probing for
features, bpftool attempts to strlen() that name and segfaults.
Let's fix it by skipping probes for "unknown" program and map types,
with an informational message giving the numeral value in that case.

The optional parameter "map MAP" can be added to "bpftool iter"
command to create a bpf iterator for map elements. For example,
bpftool iter pin ./prog.o /sys/fs/bpf/p1 map id 333
For map element bpf iterator "map MAP" parameter is required.
Otherwise, bpf link creation will return an error.
Quentin Monnet kindly provided bash-completion implementation
for new "map MAP" option.

The bpftool sources include code to walk file trees, but use multiple
frameworks to do so: nftw and fts. While nftw conforms to POSIX/SUSv3 and
is widely available, fts is not conformant and less common, especially on
non-glibc systems. The inconsistent framework usage hampers maintenance
and portability of bpftool, in particular for embedded systems.
Standardize code usage by rewriting one fts-based function to use nftw and
clean up some related function warnings by extending use of "const char *"
arguments. This change helps in building bpftool against musl for OpenWrt.
Also fix an unsafe call to dirname() by duplicating the string to pass,
since some implementations may directly alter it. The same approach is
used in libbpf.c.

A handful of samples and selftests fail to build on s390, because
after commit 0ebeea8ca8 ("bpf: Restrict bpf_probe_read{, str}()

Pulling header files directly out of the kernel sources for inclusion in
userspace programs is highly error prone, not least because it bypasses
the kbuild infrastructure entirely and so may end up referencing other
header files that have not been generated.
Subsequent patches will cause compiler.h to pull in the ungenerated
asm/rwonce.h file via filter.h, breaking the build for tools/bpf:

Reliably remove all the type modifiers from read-only (.rodata) global
variable definitions, including cases of inner field const modifiers and
arrays of const values.
Also modify one of selftests to ensure that const volatile struct doesn't
prevent user-space from modifying .rodata variable.

The resolve_btfids tool scans elf object for .BTF_ids section
and resolves its symbols with BTF ID values.
It will be used to during linking time to resolve arrays of BTF
ID values used in verifier, so these IDs do not need to be
resolved in runtime.
The expected layout of .BTF_ids section is described in main.c
header. Related kernel changes are coming in following changes.

Fix segfault from bpftool by adding emit_obj_refs_plain when skeleton
code is disabled.
Tested by deleting BUILD_BPF_SKELS in Makefile. We found this doing
backports for Cilium when a testing image pulled in latest bpf-next
bpftool, but kept using an older clang-7.

In some build contexts (e.g., Travis CI build for outdated kernel), vmlinux.h,
generated from available kernel, doesn't contain all the types necessary for
BPF program compilation. For such set up, the most maintainable way to deal
with this problem is to keep pre-generated (almost up-to-date) vmlinux.h
checked in and use it for compilation purposes. bpftool after that can deal
with kernel missing some of the features in runtime with no problems.
To that effect, allow to specify path to custom vmlinux.h to bpftool's
Makefile with VMLINUX_H variable.

Define prog_type_name in prog.c instead of main.h so it is only defined
once. This leads to a slight decrease in the binary size of bpftool.

case. Also add vmlinux.h generation and switch profiler.bpf.c to use it.
clang-bpf-global-var feature is extended and renamed to clang-bpf-co-re to
check for support of preserve_access_index attribute, which, together with BTF
for global variables, is the minimum requirement for modern BPF programs.

Build minimal "bootstrap mode" bpftool to enable skeleton (and, later,
vmlinux.h generation), instead of building almost complete, but slightly
different (w/o skeletons, etc) bpftool to bootstrap complete bpftool build.
Current approach doesn't scale well (engineering-wise) when adding more BPF
programs to bpftool and other complicated functionality, as it requires
constant adjusting of the code to work in both bootstrapped mode and normal
mode.
So it's better to build only minimal bpftool version that supports only BPF
skeleton code generation and BTF-to-C conversion. Thankfully, this is quite
easy to accomplish due to internal modularity of bpftool commands. This will
also allow to keep adding new functionality to bpftool in general, without the
need to care about bootstrap mode for those new parts of bpftool.

Move functions that parse map and prog by id/tag/name/etc outside of
map.c/prog.c, respectively. These functions are used outside of those files
and are generic enough to be in common. This also makes heavy-weight map.c and
prog.c more decoupled from the rest of bpftool files and facilitates more
lightweight bootstrap bpftool variant.

Currently, the codegen function might fail and return an error. But its
callers continue without checking its return value. Since codegen can
fail only in the unlikely case of the system running out of memory or
the static template being malformed, just exit(-1) directly from codegen
and make it void-returning.

When using make kselftest TARGETS=bpf, tools/bpf is built with
MAKEFLAGS=rR, which causes $(COMPILE.c) to be undefined, which in turn
causes the build to fail with
CC kselftest/bpf/tools/build/bpftool/map_perf_ring.o
/bin/sh: 1: -MMD: not found
Fix by using $(CC) $(CFLAGS) -c instead of $(COMPILE.c).

btf__parse_raw and btf__parse_elf return negative error numbers wrapped
in an ERR_PTR, so the extracted value needs to be negated before passing

Following the introduction of CAP_BPF, and the switch from CAP_SYS_ADMIN
to other capabilities for various BPF features, update the capability
checks (and potentially, drops) in bpftool for feature probes. Because
bpftool and/or the system might not know of CAP_BPF yet, some caution is
necessary:
- If compiled and run on a system with CAP_BPF, check CAP_BPF,
CAP_SYS_ADMIN, CAP_PERFMON, CAP_NET_ADMIN.
- Guard against CAP_BPF being undefined, to allow compiling bpftool from
latest sources on older systems. If the system where feature probes
are run does not know of CAP_BPF, stop checking after CAP_SYS_ADMIN,
as this should be the only capability required for all the BPF
probing.
- If compiled from latest sources on a system without CAP_BPF, but later
executed on a newer system with CAP_BPF knowledge, then we only test
CAP_SYS_ADMIN. Some probes may fail if the bpftool process has
CAP_SYS_ADMIN but misses the other capabilities. The alternative would
be to redefine the value for CAP_BPF in bpftool, but this does not
look clean, and the case sounds relatively rare anyway.
Note that libcap offers a cap_to_name() function to retrieve the name of
a given capability (e.g. "cap_sys_admin"). We do not use it because
deriving the names from the macros looks simpler than using
cap_to_name() (doing a strdup() on the string) + cap_free() + handling
the case of failed allocations, when we just want to use the name of the
capability in an error message.
The checks when compiling without libcap (i.e. root versus non-root) are
unchanged.
v2:
- Do not allocate cap_list dynamically.
- Drop BPF-related capabilities when running with "unprivileged", even
if we didn't have the full set in the first place (in v1, we would
skip dropping them in that case).
- Keep track of what capabilities we have, print the names of the
missing ones for privileged probing.
- Attempt to drop only the capabilities we actually have.
- Rename a couple variables.

This is a clean-up for the formatting of the do_help functions for
bpftool's subcommands. The following fixes are included:
- Do not use argv[-2] for "iter" help message, as the help is shown by
default if no "iter" action is selected, resulting in messages looking
like "./bpftool bpftool pin...".
- Do not print unused HELP_SPEC_PROGRAM in help message for "bpftool
link".
- Andrii used argument indexing to avoid having multiple occurrences of
bin_name and argv[-2] in the fprintf() for the help message, for
"bpftool gen" and "bpftool link". Let's reuse this for all other help
functions. We can remove up to thirty arguments for the "bpftool map"
help message.
- Harmonise all functions, e.g. use ending quotes-comma on a separate
line.

In Cilium we've recently switched to make use of bpf_jiffies64() for
parts of our tc and XDP datapath since bpf_ktime_get_ns() is more
expensive and high-precision is not needed for our timeouts we have
anyway. Our agent has a probe manager which picks up the json of
bpftool's feature probe and we also use the macro output in our C
programs e.g. to have workarounds when helpers are not available on
older kernels.
Extend the kernel config info dump to also include the kernel's
CONFIG_HZ, and rework the probe_kernel_image_config() for allowing a
macro dump such that CONFIG_HZ can be propagated to BPF C code as a
simple define if available via config. Latter allows to have _compile-
time_ resolution of jiffies <-> sec conversion in our code since all
are propagated as known constants.
Given we cannot generally assume availability of kconfig everywhere,
we also have a kernel hz probe [0] as a fallback. Potentially, bpftool
could have an integrated probe fallback as well, although to derive it,
we might need to place it under 'bpftool feature probe full' or similar
given it would slow down the probing process overall. Yet 'full' doesn't
fit either for us since we don't want to pollute the kernel log with
warning messages from bpf_probe_write_user() and bpf_trace_printk() on
agent startup; I've left it out for the time being.

Currently, only one command is supported
bpftool iter pin <bpf_prog.o> <path>
It will pin the trace/iter bpf program in
the object file <bpf_prog.o> to the <path>
where <path> should be on a bpffs mount.

The implementation for ipv6_route iterator is in one of subsequent
patches.
This patch also added BPF_LINK_TYPE_ITER to link query.
In the future, we may add additional parameters to pin command
by parameterizing the bpf iterator. For example, a map_id or pid
may be added to let bpf program only traverses a single map or task,
similar to kernel seq_file single_open().
We may also add introspection command for targets/iterators by
leveraging the bpf_iter itself.

The new libcap dependency is not used for an essential feature of
bpftool, and we could imagine building the tool without checks on
CAP_SYS_ADMIN by disabling probing features as an unprivileged users.
Make it so, in order to avoid a hard dependency on libcap, and to ease
packaging/embedding of bpftool.

There is demand for a way to identify what BPF helper functions are
available to unprivileged users. To do so, allow unprivileged users to
run "bpftool feature probe" to list BPF-related features. This will only
show features accessible to those users, and may not reflect the full
list of features available (to administrators) on the system.
To avoid the case where bpftool is inadvertently run as non-root and
would list only a subset of the features supported by the system when it
would be expected to list all of them, running as unprivileged is gated
behind the "unprivileged" keyword passed to the command line. When used
by a privileged user, this keyword allows to drop the CAP_SYS_ADMIN and
to list the features available to unprivileged users. Note that this
addsd a dependency on libpcap for compiling bpftool.
Note that there is no particular reason why the probes were restricted
to root, other than the fact I did not need them for unprivileged and
did not bother with the additional checks at the time probes were added.

The "full_mode" variable used for switching between full or partial
feature probing (i.e. with or without probing helpers that will log
warnings in kernel logs) was piped from the main do_probe() function
down to probe_helpers_for_progtype(), where it is needed.
Define it as a global variable: the calls will be more readable, and if
other similar flags were to be used in the future, we could use global
variables as well instead of extending again the list of arguments with
new flags.

Reorder include paths to ensure that runqslower sources are picking up
vmlinux.h, generated by runqslower's own Makefile. When runqslower is built
from selftests/bpf, due to current -I$(BPF_INCLUDE) -I$(OUTPUT) ordering, it
might pick up not-yet-complete vmlinux.h, generated by selftests Makefile,
which could lead to compilation errors like [0]. So ensure that -I$(OUTPUT)
goes first and rely on runqslower's Makefile own dependency chain to ensure
vmlinux.h is properly completed before source code relying on it is compiled.

In commit 65c9362859 ("bpftool: Add struct_ops support") a new
type of command named struct_ops has been added. This command requires
a kernel with CONFIG_DEBUG_INFO_BTF=y set and for retrieving BTF info
in bpftool, the helper get_btf_vmlinux() is used.
When running this command on kernel without BTF debug info, this will
lead to 'btf_vmlinux' variable being an invalid(error) pointer. And by
this, btf_free() causes a segfault when executing 'bpftool struct_ops'.
This commit adds pointer validation with IS_ERR not to free invalid
pointer, and this will fix the segfault issue.

This patch adds struct_ops support to the bpftool.
To recap a bit on the recent bpf_struct_ops feature on the kernel side:
It currently supports "struct tcp_congestion_ops" to be implemented
in bpf. At a high level, bpf_struct_ops is struct_ops map populated
with a number of bpf progs. bpf_struct_ops currently supports the
"struct tcp_congestion_ops". However, the bpf_struct_ops design is
generic enough that other kernel struct ops can be supported in
the future.
Although struct_ops is map+progs at a high lever, there are differences
in details. For example,
1) After registering a struct_ops, the struct_ops is held by the kernel
subsystem (e.g. tcp-cc). Thus, there is no need to pin a
struct_ops map or its progs in order to keep them around.
2) To iterate all struct_ops in a system, it iterates all maps
in type BPF_MAP_TYPE_STRUCT_OPS. BPF_MAP_TYPE_STRUCT_OPS is
the current usual filter. In the future, it may need to
filter by other struct_ops specific properties. e.g. filter by
tcp_congestion_ops or other kernel subsystem ops in the future.
3) struct_ops requires the running kernel having BTF info. That allows
more flexibility in handling other kernel structs. e.g. it can
always dump the latest bpf_map_info.
4) Also, "struct_ops" command is not intended to repeat all features
already provided by "map" or "prog". For example, if there really
is a need to pin the struct_ops map, the user can use the "map" cmd
to do that.
While the first attempt was to reuse parts from map/prog.c, it ended up
not a lot to share. The only obvious item is the map_parse_fds() but
that still requires modifications to accommodate struct_ops map specific
filtering (for the immediate and the future needs). Together with the
earlier mentioned differences, it is better to part away from map/prog.c.
The initial set of subcmds are, register, unregister, show, and dump.
For register, it registers all struct_ops maps that can be found in an
obj file. Option can be added in the future to specify a particular
struct_ops map. Also, the common bpf_tcp_cc is stateless (e.g.
bpf_cubic.c and bpf_dctcp.c). The "reuse map" feature is not
implemented in this patch and it can be considered later also.
For other subcmds, please see the man doc for details.

The kernel struct_ops obj has kernel's func ptrs implemented by bpf_progs.
The bpf prog_id is stored as the value of the func ptr for introspection
purpose. In the latter patch, a struct_ops dump subcmd will be added
to introspect these func ptrs. It is desired to print the actual bpf
prog_name instead of only printing the prog_id.
Since struct_ops is the only usecase storing prog_id in the func ptr,
this patch adds a prog_id_as_func_ptr bool (default is false) to
"struct btf_dumper" in order not to mis-interpret the ptr value
for the other existing use-cases.
While printing a func_ptr as a bpf prog_name,
this patch also prefix the bpf prog_name with the ptr's func_proto.
[ Note that it is the ptr's func_proto instead of the bpf prog's
func_proto ]
It reuses the current btf_dump_func() to obtain the ptr's func_proto
string.

A char[] is currently printed as an integer array.
This patch will print it as a string when
1) The array element type is an one byte int
2) The array element type has a BTF_INT_CHAR encoding or
the array element type's name is "char"
3) All characters is between (0x1f, 0x7f) and it is terminated
by a null character.

This patch prints the enum's name if there is one found in
the array of btf_enum.
The commit 9eea984979 ("bpf: fix BTF verification of enums")
has details about an enum could have any power-of-2 size (up to 8 bytes).
This patch also takes this chance to accommodate these non 4 byte
enums.

Commit fe4eb069ed ("bpftool: Use linux/types.h from source tree for
profiler build") added a build dependency on tools/testing/selftests/bpf
to tools/bpf/bpftool. This is suboptimal with respect to a possible
stand-alone build of bpftool.
Fix this by moving tools/testing/selftests/bpf/include/uapi/linux/types.h
to tools/include/uapi/linux/types.h.
This requires an adjustment in the include search path order for the
tests in tools/testing/selftests/bpf so that tools/include/linux/types.h
is selected when building host binaries and
tools/include/uapi/linux/types.h is selected when building bpf binaries.
Verified by compiling bpftool and the bpf selftests on x86_64 with this
change.

In commit 4a3d6c6a6e ("libbpf: Reduce log level for custom section
names"), log level for messages for libbpf_attach_type_by_name() and
libbpf_prog_type_by_name() was downgraded from "info" to "debug". The
latter function, in particular, is used by bpftool when attempting to
load programs, and this change caused bpftool to exit with no hint or
error message when it fails to detect the type of the program to load
(unless "-d" option was provided).
To help users understand why bpftool fails to load the program, let's do
a second run of the function with log level in "debug" mode in case of
failure.

Documentation and interactive help for bpftool have always explained
that the regular handles for programs (id|name|tag|pinned) and maps
(id|name|pinned) can be passed to the utility when attempting to pin
objects (bpftool prog pin PROG / bpftool map pin MAP).
THIS IS A LIE!! The tool actually accepts only ids, as the parsing is
done in do_pin_any() in common.c instead of reusing the parsing
functions that have long been generic for program and map handles.
Instead of fixing the doc, fix the code. It is trivial to reuse the
generic parsing, and to simplify do_pin_any() in the process.
Do not accept to pin multiple objects at the same time with
prog_parse_fds() or map_parse_fds() (this would require a more complex
syntax for passing multiple sysfs paths and validating that they
correspond to the number of e.g. programs we find for a given name or
tag).

bpftool-prog-profile requires clang to generate BTF for global variables.
When compared with older clang, skip this command. This is achieved by

When compiling bpftool on a system where the /usr/include/asm symlink
doesn't exist (e.g. on an Ubuntu system without gcc-multilib installed),
the build fails with:

This indicates that the build is using linux/types.h from system headers
instead of source tree headers.
To fix this, adjust the clang search path to include the necessary

skeleton/profiler.h to avoid clashing with the definition in
tools/testing/selftests/bpf/include/uapi/linux/types.h.

Libbpf compiles and runs subset of selftests on each PR in its Github mirror
repository. To allow still building up-to-date selftests against outdated
kernel images, add back BPF_F_CURRENT_CPU definitions back.
N.B. BCC's runqslower version ([0]) doesn't need BPF_F_CURRENT_CPU due to use of
locally checked in vmlinux.h, generated against kernel with 1aae4bdd78 ("bpf:
Switch BPF UAPI #define constants used from BPF program side to enums")
applied.

With fentry/fexit programs, it is possible to profile BPF program with
hardware counters. Introduce bpftool "prog profile", which measures key
metrics of a BPF program.
bpftool prog profile command creates per-cpu perf events. Then it attaches
fentry/fexit programs to the target BPF program. The fentry program saves
perf event value to a map. The fexit program reads the perf event again,
and calculates the difference, which is the instructions/cycles used by
the target program.
Example input and output:

This command measures cycles and instructions for BPF program with id
337 for 3 seconds. The program has triggered 4228 times. The rest of the
output is similar to perf-stat. In this example, the counters were only
counting ~84% of the time because of time multiplexing of perf counters.
Note that, this approach measures cycles and instructions in very small
increments. So the fentry/fexit programs introduce noticeable errors to
the measurement results.
The fentry/fexit programs are generated with BPF skeletons. Therefore, we
build bpftool twice. The first time _bpftool is built without skeletons.
Then, _bpftool is used to generate the skeletons. The second time, bpftool
is built with skeletons.

Add canonical #ifndef/#define/#endif guard for generated vmlinux.h header with
__VMLINUX_H__ symbol. __VMLINUX_H__ is also going to play double role of
identifying whether vmlinux.h is being used, versus, say, BCC or non-CO-RE
libbpf modes with dependency on kernel headers. This will make it possible to
write helper macro/functions, agnostic to exact BPF program set up.

Probes related to bpf_probe_write_user and bpf_trace_printk helpers emit
dmesg warnings which might be confusing for people running bpftool on
production environments. This change filters them out by default and
introduces the new positional argument "full" which enables all
available probes.

Turns out the xlated program instructions can also be missing if
kptr_restrict sysctl is set. This means that the previous fix to check the
jited_prog_insns pointer was insufficient; add another check of the
xlated_prog_insns pointer as well.
