6a8cbc41ba (developer: enable pedantic by default, 2021-09-03)
enables pedantic mode in as many compilers as possible to help gather
feedback on future tightening, so lets do so.
-Wpedantic is missing in some really old gcc 4 versions so lets restrict
it to gcc5 and clang4 (it does work in clang3 AFAIK, but it will be
unlikely that a developer will use such an old compiler anyway).
MinGW gcc is the only one which has -Wno-pedantic-ms-format, and while
that is available also in older compilers, the Windows SDK provides gcc10
so lets aim for that.
Note that in order to target the flag to only Windows, additional changes
were needed in config.mak.uname to propagate the OS detection which also
did some minor refactoring, but which is functionaly equivalent.

Change various places that hardcode the names of these two files to
refer to either $(GENERATED_H), or to a new generated-hdrs
target. That target is consistent with the *-objs targets I recently
added in 029bac01a8 (Makefile: add {program,xdiff,test,git,fuzz}-objs
& objects targets, 2021-02-23).
A subsequent commit will add a new generated hook-list.h. By doing
this refactoring we'll only need to add the new file to the
GENERATED_H variable, not EXCEPT_HDRS, the vcbuild/README etc.
Hardcoding command-list.h there seems to have been a case of
copy/paste programming in 976aaedca0 (msvc: add a Makefile target to
pre-generate the Visual Studio solution, 2019-07-29). The
config-list.h was added later in 709df95b78 (help: move
list_config_help to builtin/help, 2020-04-16).

It can be useful to tell who invoked Git - was it invoked manually by a
user via CLI or script? By an IDE? In some cases - like 'repo' tool -
we can influence the source code and set the GIT_TRACE2_PARENT_SID
environment variable from the caller process. In 'repo''s case, that
parent SID is manipulated to include the string "repo", which means we
can positively identify when Git was invoked by 'repo' tool. However,
identifying parents that way requires both that we know which tools
invoke Git and that we have the ability to modify the source code of
those tools. It cannot scale to keep up with the various IDEs and
wrappers which use Git, most of which we don't know about. Learning
which tools and wrappers invoke Git, and how, would give us insight to
decide where to improve Git's usability and performance.
Unfortunately, there's no cross-platform reliable way to gather the name
of the parent process. If procfs is present, we can use that; otherwise
we will need to discover the name another way. However, the process ID
should be sufficient to look up the process name on most platforms, so
that code may be shareable.
Git for Windows gathers similar information and logs it as a "data_json"
event. However, since "data_json" has a variable format, it is difficult
to parse effectively in some languages; instead, let's pursue a
dedicated "cmd_ancestry" event to record information about the ancestry
of the current process and a consistent, parseable way.
Git for Windows also gathers information about more than one generation
of parent. In Linux further ancestry info can be gathered with procfs,
but it's unwieldy to do so. In the interest of later moving Git for
Windows ancestry logging to the 'cmd_ancestry' event, and in the
interest of later adding more ancestry to the Linux implementation - or
of adding this functionality to other platforms which have an easier
time walking the process tree - let's make 'cmd_ancestry' accept an
array of parentage.

To pave the way for non-Windows platforms to define
trace2_collect_process_info(), reorganize the stub-or-definition schema
to something which doesn't directly reference Windows.
Platforms which want to collect parent process information in the
future should:
1. Add an implementation to compat/ (e.g. compat/somearch/procinfo.c)
2. Add that object to COMPAT_OBJS to config.mak.uname
(e.g. COMPAT_OBJS += compat/somearch/procinfo.o)
3. Define HAVE_PLATFORM_PROCINFO in config.mak.uname
In the Windows case, this definition lives in
compat/win32/trace2_win32_process_info.c, which is already conditionally
added to COMPAT_OBJS; so let's add HAVE_PLATFORM_PROCINFO to hint to the
build that compat/stub/procinfo.c should not be used.

Git for Windows' prefix is `/mingw64/` (or `/mingw32/` for 32-bit
versions), therefore the system config is located at the clunky location
`C:\Program Files\Git\mingw64\etc\gitconfig`.
This moves the system config into a more logical location: the `mingw64`
part of `C:\Program Files\Git\mingw64\etc\gitconfig` never made sense,
as it is a mere implementation detail. Let's skip the `mingw64` part and
move this to `C:\Program Files\Git\etc\gitconfig`.
Side note: in the rare (and not recommended) case a user chooses to
install 32-bit Git for Windows on a 64-bit system, the path will of
course be `C:\Program Files (x86)\Git\etc\gitconfig`.
Background: During the Git for Windows v1.x days, the system config was
located at `C:\Program Files (x86)\Git\etc\gitconfig`. With Git for
Windows v2.x, it moved to `C:\Program Files\Git\mingw64\gitconfig` (or
`C:\Program Files (x86)\Git\mingw32\gitconfig`). Rather than fixing it
back then, we tried to introduce a "Windows-wide" config, but that never
caught on.
Likewise, we move the system `gitattributes` into the same directory.
Obviously, we are cautious to do this only for the known install
locations `/mingw64` and `/mingw32`; If anybody wants to override that
while building their version of Git (e.g. via `make prefix=$HOME`), we
leave the default location of the system config and gitattributes alone.

We've had mixed reports on whether the latest release of macOS needs
this Makefile knob set. In most reported cases, there's antivirus
software running (which one might imagine could cause an open() call to
be delayed). However, one of the (off-list) reports I've gotten
indicated that it happened on an otherwise clean install of Big Sur.
Since the symptom is so bad (checkout randomly fails to write several
fails when the progress meter kicks in), and since the workaround is so
lightweight (if we don't see EINTR, it's just an extra conditional
check), let's just turn it on by default.

hasn't existed since 23c4bbe28e ("build: link with curl-defined
linker flags", 2018-11-03). Remove it, and a comment which referred to

addition of the comment.

ccd469450a (date.c: switch to reentrant {gm,local}time_r, 2019-11-28)
removes the only gmtime() call we had and moves to gmtime_r() which
doesn't have the same portability problems.
Remove the compat gmtime code since it is no longer needed, and confirm
by successfull running t4212 in FreeBSD 9.3 amd64 (the oldest I could
get a hold off).
Further work might be needed to ensure 32bit time_t systems (like FreeBSD
i386) will handle correctly the overflows tested in t4212, but that is
orthogonal to this change, and it doesn't change the current behaviour
as neither gmtime() or gmtime_r() will ever return NULL on those systems
because time_t is unsigned.

Recent update to Homebrew used by macOS folks breaks build by
moving gettext library and necessary headers.

Apparently a recent Homebrew update now installs `gettext` into the
subdirectory /usr/local/opt/gettext/[lib/include].
Sometimes the ci job succeeds:

And sometimes installing the package "gettext" with force-link fails:

Likewise, the `msgfmt` tool is no longer in the `PATH`.
While it is unclear which change is responsible for this breakage (that
most notably only occurs on CI build agents that updated very recently),
https://github.com/Homebrew/homebrew-core/pull/53489 has fixed it.
Nevertheless, let's work around this issue, as there are still quite a
few build agents out there that need some help in this regard: we
explicitly do not call `brew update` in our CI/PR builds anymore.

GNU/Hurd is another platform that behaves like this. Set it to
UnfortunatelyYes so that config directory files are correctly processed.
This fixes the corresponding 'proper error on directory "files"' test in
t1308-config-set.sh.

Starting in 3ac68a93fd, help.o began to depend on builtin/branch.o,
builtin/clean.o, and builtin/config.o. This meant that help.o was
unusable outside of the context of the main Git executable.
To make help.o usable by other commands again, move list_config_help()
into builtin/help.c (where it makes sense to assume other builtin libraries
are present).
When command-list.h is included but a member is not used, we start to
hear a compiler warning. Since the config list is generated in a fairly
different way than the command list, and since commands and config
options are semantically different, move the config list into its own
header and move the generator into its own script and build rule.
For reasons explained in 976aaedc (msvc: add a Makefile target to
pre-generate the Visual Studio solution, 2019-07-29), some build
artifacts we consider non-source files cannot be generated in the
Visual Studio environment, and we already have some Makefile tweaks
to help Visual Studio to use generated command-list.h header file.
Do the same to a new generated file, config-list.h, introduced by
this change.

Back in the DOS days, in the FAT file system, file names always
consisted of a base name of length 8 plus a file extension of length 3.
Shorter file names were simply padded with spaces to the full 8.3
format.
Later, the FAT file system was taught to support _also_ longer names,
with an 8.3 "short name" as primary file name. While at it, the same
facility allowed formerly illegal file names, such as `.git` (empty base
names were not allowed), which would have the "short name" `git~1`
associated with it.
For backwards-compatibility, NTFS supports alternative 8.3 short
filenames, too, even if starting with Windows Vista, they are only
generated on the system drive by default.
We addressed the problem that the `.git/` directory can _also_ be
accessed via `git~1/` (when short names are enabled) in 2b4c6efc82
(read-cache: optionally disallow NTFS .git variants, 2014-12-16), i.e.
since Git v1.9.5, by introducing the config setting `core.protectNTFS`
and enabling it by default on Windows.
In the meantime, Windows 10 introduced the "Windows Subsystem for Linux"
(short: WSL), i.e. a way to run Linux applications/distributions in a
thinly-isolated subsystem on Windows (giving rise to many a "2016 is the
Year of Linux on the Desktop" jokes). WSL is getting increasingly
popular, also due to the painless way Linux application can operate
directly ("natively") on files on Windows' file system: the Windows
drives are mounted automatically (e.g. `C:` as `/mnt/c/`).
Taken together, this means that we now have to enable the safe-guards of
Git v1.9.5 also in WSL: it is possible to access a `.git` directory
inside `/mnt/c/` via the 8.3 name `git~1` (unless short name generation
was disabled manually). Since regular Linux distributions run in WSL,
this means we have to enable `core.protectNTFS` at least on Linux, too.
To enable Services for Macintosh in Windows NT to store so-called
resource forks, NTFS introduced "Alternate Data Streams". Essentially,
these constitute additional metadata that are connected to (and copied
with) their associated files, and they are accessed via pseudo file
names of the form `filename:<stream-name>:<stream-type>`.
In a recent patch, we extended `core.protectNTFS` to also protect
against accesses via NTFS Alternate Data Streams, e.g. to prevent
contents of the `.git/` directory to be "tracked" via yet another
alternative file name.
While it is not possible (at least by default) to access files via NTFS
Alternate Data Streams from within WSL, the defaults on macOS when
mounting network shares via SMB _do_ allow accessing files and
directories in that way. Therefore, we need to enable `core.protectNTFS`
on macOS by default, too, and really, on any Operating System that can
mount network shares via SMB/CIFS.
A couple of approaches were considered for fixing this:
1. We could perform a dynamic NTFS check similar to the `core.symlinks`
check in `init`/`clone`: instead of trying to create a symbolic link
in the `.git/` directory, we could create a test file and try to
access `.git/config` via 8.3 name and/or Alternate Data Stream.
2. We could simply "flip the switch" on `core.protectNTFS`, to make it
"on by default".
The obvious downside of 1. is that it won't protect worktrees that were
clone with a vulnerable Git version already. We considered patching code
paths that check out files to check whether we're running on an NTFS
system dynamically and persist the result in the repository-local config
setting `core.protectNTFS`, but in the end decided that this solution
would be too fragile, and too involved.
The obvious downside of 2. is that everybody will have to "suffer" the
performance penalty incurred from calling `is_ntfs_dotgit()` on every
path, even in setups where.
After the recent work to accelerate `is_ntfs_dotgit()` in most cases,
it looks as if the time spent on validating ten million random
file names increases only negligibly (less than 20ms, well within the
standard deviation of ~50ms). Therefore the benefits outweigh the cost.
Another downside of this is that paths that might have been acceptable
previously now will be forbidden. Realistically, though, this is an
improvement because public Git hosters already would reject any `git
push` that contains such file names.
Note: There might be a similar problem mounting HFS+ on Linux. However,
this scenario has been considered unlikely and in light of the cost (in
the aforementioned benchmark, `core.protectHFS = true` increased the
time from ~440ms to ~610ms), it was decided _not_ to touch the default
of `core.protectHFS`.
This change addresses CVE-2019-1353.

In the CI builds, we bundle all generated files into a so-called
artifacts `.tar` file, so that the test phase can fan out into multiple
parallel builds.
This patch makes sure that all files are included in the `vcxproj`
target which are needed for that artifacts `.tar` file.

In b18ae14a8f (vcxproj: also link-or-copy builtins, 2019-07-29), we
started to copy or hard-link the built-ins as a post-build step of the
`git` project.
At the same time, we tried to copy or hard-link `git-remote-http.exe`,
but it is quite possible that it was not built at that time.
Let's move that latter task into a post-install step of the
`git-remote-http` project instead.

The default location for `.exe` files linked by Visual Studio depends on
the mode (debug vs release) and the architecture. Meaning: after a full
build, there is a `git.exe` in the top-level directory, but none of the
built-ins are linked..
When running a test script in Git Bash, it therefore would pick up the
wrong, say, `git-receive-pack.exe`: the one installed at the same time
as the Git Bash.
Absolutely not what we want. We want to have confidence that our test
covers the MSVC-built Git executables, and not some random stuff.

The entire idea of generating the VS solution makes only sense if we
generate it via Continuous Integration; otherwise potential users would
still have to download the entire Git for Windows SDK.
If we pre-generate the Visual Studio solution, Git can be built entirely
within Visual Studio, and the test scripts can be run in a regular Git
for Windows (e.g. the Portable Git flavor, which does not include a full
GCC toolchain and therefore weighs only about a tenth of Git for
Windows' SDK).
So let's just add a target in the Makefile that can be used to generate
said solution; The generated files will then be committed so that they
can be pushed to a branch ready to check out by Visual Studio users.
To make things even more useful, we also generate and commit other files
that are required to run the test suite, such as templates and
bin-wrappers: with this, developers can run the test suite in a regular
Git Bash after building the solution in Visual Studio.
Note: for this build target, we do not actually need to initialize the
`vcpkg` system, so we don't.

To reduce Git for Windows' attack surface, we started using the Address
Space Layout Randomization and Data Execution Prevention features in
ce6a158561 (mingw: enable DEP and ASLR, 2019-05-08).
To remove yet another attack vector, let's make use of gcc's stack
smashing protector that helps detect stack buffer overruns early.
Rather than using -fstack-protector, we use -fstack-protector-strong
because on Windows: The latter appears to strike a better balance
between the performance impact and the provided safety.
In a non-scientific test (time git log --grep=is -p), best of 5 timings
went from 23.009s to 22.997s, i.e. the performance impact was *well*
lost in the noise.

With this patch, Git can be built using the Microsoft toolchain, via:
make MSVC=1 [DEBUG=1]
Third party libraries are built from source using the open source
"vcpkg" tool set. See https://github.com/Microsoft/vcpkg
On a first build, the vcpkg tools and the third party libraries are
automatically downloaded and built. DLLs for the third party libraries
are copied to the top-level (and t/helper) directory to facilitate
debugging. See compat/vcbuild/README.
A series of .bat files are invoked by the Makefile to find the location
of the installed version of Visual Studio and the associated compiler
tools (essentially replicating the environment setup performed by a
"Developer Command Prompt"). This should find the most recent VS2015 or
VS2017 installation. Output from these scripts are used by the Makefile
to define compiler and linker pathnames and -I and -L arguments.
The build produces .pdb files for both debug and release builds.
Note: This commit was squashed from an organic series of commits
developed between 2016 and 2018 in Git for Windows' `master` branch.
This combined commit eliminates the obsolete commits related to fetching
NuGet packages for third party libraries. It is difficult to use NuGet
packages for C/C++ sources because they may be built by earlier versions
of the MSVC compiler and have CRT version and linking issues.
Additionally, the C/C++ NuGet packages that we were using tended to not
be updated concurrently with the sources. And in the case of cURL and
OpenSSL, this could expose us to security issues.

Git for Windows has special code to retrieve the command-line parameters
(and even the environment) in UTF-16 encoding, so that they can be
converted to UTF-8. This is necessary because Git for Windows wants to
use UTF-8 encoded strings throughout its code, and the main() function
does not get the parameters in that encoding.
To do that, we used the __wgetmainargs() function, which is not even a
Win32 API function, but provided by the MINGW "runtime" instead.
Obviously, this method would not work with any compiler other than GCC,
and in preparation for compiling with Visual C++, we would like to avoid
precisely that.
Lucky us, there is a much more elegant way: we can simply implement the
UTF-16 variant of `main()`: `wmain()`.
To make that work, we need to link with -municode. The command-line
parameters are passed to `wmain()` encoded in UTF-16, as desired, and
this method also works with GCC, and also with Visual C++ after
adjusting the MSVC linker flags to force it to use `wmain()`.

The msysGit project (i.e. Git for Windows 1.x' SDK) is safely dead for
*years* already. This is probably the reason why nobody caught this typo
until Carlo Arenas spotted a copy-edited version of it nearby.
It is probably about time to rip out the remainders of msysGit/MSys1
support, but that can safely wait a bit longer, and we can at least fix
the typo for now.

Enable DEP (Data Execution Prevention) and ASLR (Address Space Layout
Randomization) support. This applies to both 32bit and 64bit builds
and makes it substantially harder to exploit security holes in Git by
offering a much more unpredictable attack surface.
ASLR interferes with GDB's ability to set breakpoints. A similar issue
holds true when compiling with -O2 (in which case single-stepping is
messed up because GDB cannot map the code back to the original source
code properly). Therefore we simply enable ASLR only when an
optimization flag is present in the CFLAGS, using it as an indicator
that the developer does not want to debug in GDB anyway.

This is the first step for enabling ASLR (Address Space Layout
Randomization) support. We want to enable ASLR for better protection
against exploiting security holes in Git: it makes it harder to attack
software by making code addresses unpredictable.
The problem fixed by this commit is that `ld.exe` seems to be stripping
relocations which in turn will break ASLR support. We just make sure
it's not stripping the main executable entry.

On AIX, access(X_OK) may succeed when run as root even if the
execution isn't possible. This behavior is allowed by POSIX
which says:
... for a process with appropriate privileges, an implementation
may indicate success for X_OK even if execute permission is not
granted to any user.
It can lead hook programs to have their execution refused:
git commit -m content
fatal: cannot exec '.git/hooks/pre-commit': Permission denied
Add NEED_ACCESS_ROOT_HANDLER in order to use an access helper function.
It checks with stat if any executable flags is set when the current user
is root.

Build with gettext breaks on recent macOS w/ Homebrew when
/usr/local/bin is not on PATH, which has been corrected.

Due to reasons (some XCode versions seem to include gettext, some
don't?), Homebrew does not expose the libraries and headers in
/usr/local/ by default anymore.
Let's help find them again.
Note: for some reason, this is a change of behavior caused by the
upgrade to Mojave, identified in our Azure Pipeline; it seems that
Homebrew used to add the /usr/local/ directories to the include and link
search path before, but now it no longer does.

A path such as 'c:/somepath/submodule/../.git/modules/submodule' wasn't
resolved correctly any more, because the *nix variant of offset_1st_component
is used instead of the Win32 specific version.
Regression was introduced in commit 1cadad6f6 when mingw_offset_1st_component
was moved from mingw.c which is included by msvc.c to a separate file. Then,
the new file "compat/win32/path-utils.h" was only included for the __CYGWIN__
and __MINGW32__ cases in git-compat-util.h, the case for _MSC_VER was missing.

Recently the Git for Windows project started the upgrade process to
a MSYS2 runtime version based on Cygwin v3.x.
This has the very notable consequence that `$(uname -r)` no longer
reports a version starting with "2", but a version with "3".
That breaks our build, as df5218b4c3 (config.mak.uname: support MSys2,
2016-01-13) simply did not expect the version reported by `uname -r` to
depend on the underlying Cygwin version: it expected the reported
version to match the "2" in "MSYS2".
So let's invert that test case to test for *anything else* than a
version starting with "1" (for MSys). That should safeguard us for the
future, even if Cygwin ends up releasing versionsl like 314.272.65536.

Add platform-specific interface to log information about the current
process.
On Windows, this interface is used to indicate whether the git process
is running under a debugger and list names of the process ancestors.

In `git version --build-options`, we report also the CPU, but in Git for
Windows we actually cross-compile the 32-bit version in a 64-bit Git for
Windows, so we cannot rely on the auto-detected value.
In 3815f64b0d (mingw: fix CPU reporting in `git version
--build-options`, 2019-02-07), we fixed this by a Windows-only
workaround, making use of magic pre-processor constants, which works in
GCC, but most likely not all C compilers.
As pointed out by Eric Sunshine, there is a better way, anyway: to set
the Makefile variable HOST_CPU explicitly for cross-compiled Git. So
let's do that!

The default bash is now officially in /usr/coreutils/bin instead
of in /usr/local/bin. This version of bash is more stable and
recommended for all use as of the J06.22 and L18.02 operating
system revision levels. This new version provides more stability
of test results.

On various BSD's, fileno(fp) is implemented as a macro that directly
accesses the fields in the FILE * object, which breaks a function that
accepts a "void *fp" parameter and calls fileno(fp) and expect it to
work.
Work it around by adding a compile-time knob FILENO_IS_A_MACRO that
inserts a real helper function in the middle of the callchain.

line to help developers.

An upcoming commit will change the semantics of the SPARSE_FLAGS

support the MinGW platform, nobody on that platform can be relying
on this setting today. Remove this use of the SPARSE_FLAGS variable.

configure mechanisms, including the location of Perl and Python.
There was a problem at a specific set of operating system versions

A regression for cygwin users was introduced with commit 05b458c,
"real_path: resolve symlinks by hand".
In the the commit message we read:
The current implementation of real_path uses chdir() in order to resolve
symlinks. Unfortunately this isn't thread-safe as chdir() affects a
process as a whole...
The old (and non-thread-save) OS calls chdir()/pwd() had been
replaced by a string operation.
The cygwin layer "knows" that "C:\cygwin" is an absolute path,
but the new string operation does not.
"git clone <url> C:\cygwin\home\USER\repo" fails like this:
fatal: Invalid path '/home/USER/repo/C:\cygwin\home\USER\repo'
The solution is to implement has_dos_drive_prefix(), skip_dos_drive_prefix()
is_dir_sep(), offset_1st_component() and convert_slashes() for cygwin
in the same way as it is done in 'Git for Windows' in compat/mingw.[ch]
Extract the needed code into compat/win32/path-utils.[ch] and use it
for cygwin as well.

MirBSD likely also affected but this was only tested with OpenBSD and
therefore this specific change only affects that platform
the optional 'configure' sets this automatically (tested with 6.1 to 6.4)
but considering this is a legacy feature it is likely that it affected
all old versions and is probably what most users had been using as a
workaround

The way -lcurl library gets linked has been simplified by taking
advantage of the fact that we can just ask curl-config command how.

Adjusting the build process to rely more on curl-config to populate
linker flags instead of manually populating flags based off detected
features.
Originally, a configure-invoked build would check for SSL-support in the
target curl library. If enabled, NEEDS_SSL_WITH_CURL would be set and
used in the Makefile to append additional libraries to link against. As
for systems building solely with make, the defines NEEDS_IDN_WITH_CURL
and NEEDS_SSL_WITH_CURL could be set to indirectly enable respective
linker flags. Since both configure.ac and Makefile already rely on
curl-config utility to provide curl-related build information, adjusting
the respective assets to populate required linker flags using the
utility (unless explicitly configured).

We no longer use any of MSVCRT's stat-functions, so there's no need to
stick to a CRT-compatible 'struct stat' either.
Define and use our own POSIX-2013-compatible 'struct stat' with nanosecond-
precision file times.
Note: This can cause performance issues when using Git variants with
different file time resolutions, as the timestamps are stored in the Git
index: after updating the index with a Git variant that uses
second-precision file times, a nanosecond-aware Git will think that
pretty much every single file listed in the index is out of date.

Quite some time ago, a last plea to the XP users out there who want to
see Windows XP support in Git for Windows, asking them to get engaged
and help, vanished into the depths of the universe.
We tried for a long time to play nice with the last remaining XP users
who somehow manage to build Git from source, but a recent update of
mingw-w64 (7.0.0.5233.e0c09544 -> 7.0.0.5245.edf66197) finally dropped
the last sign of XP support, and Git for Windows' SDK is no longer able
to build core Git's `master` branch as a consequence. (Git for Windows'
`master` branch already bumped the minimum Windows version to Vista a
while ago, so it is fine.)
It is time to require Windows Vista or later to build Git from source.
This, incidentally, lets us use quite a few nice new APIs.
It also means that we no longer need the inet_pton() and inet_ntop()
emulation, which is nice.

OLD_ICONV has long been needed by FreeBSD so config.mak.uname defines
it unconditionally. However, recent versions do not need it, and its
presence results in compilation warnings. Resolve this issue by defining
OLD_ICONV only for older FreeBSD versions.
Specifically, revision r281550[1], which is part of FreeBSD 11, removed
the need for OLD_ICONV, and r282275[2] back-ported that change to 10.2.
Versions prior to 10.2 do need it.

"git gc" in a large repository takes a lot of time as it considers
to repack all objects into one pack by default. The command has
been taught to pretend as if the largest existing packfile is
marked with ".keep" so that it is left untouched while objects in
other packs and loose ones are repacked.

t7700: have closing quote of a test at the beginning of line
pack-objects could be a big memory hog especially on large repos,
everybody knows that. The suggestion to stick a .keep file on the
giant base pack to avoid this problem is also known for a long time.
Recent patches add an option to do just this, but it has to be either
configured or activated manually. This patch lets `git gc --auto`
activate this mode automatically when it thinks `repack -ad` will use
a lot of memory and start affecting the system due to swapping or
flushing OS cache.
gc --auto decides to do this based on an estimation of pack-objects
memory usage, which is quite accurate at least for the heap part, and
whether that fits in half of system memory (the assumption here is for
desktop environment where there are many other applications running).
This mechanism only kicks in if gc.bigBasePackThreshold is not configured.
If it is, it is assumed that the user already knows what they want.

This change also allows us to stop overriding argv[0] with the absolute
path of the executable, allowing us to preserve e.g. the case of the
executable's file name.

Enable Git to resolve its own binary location using a variety of
OS-specific and generic methods, including:
- procfs via "/proc/self/exe" (Linux)
- _NSGetExecutablePath (Darwin)
- KERN_PROC_PATHNAME sysctl on BSDs.
- argv0, if absolute (all, including Windows).
This is used to enable RUNTIME_PREFIX support for non-Windows systems,
notably Linux and Darwin. When configured with RUNTIME_PREFIX, Git will
do a best-effort resolution of its executable path and automatically use
this as its "exec_path" for relative helper and data lookups, unless
explicitly overridden.
Small incidental formatting cleanup of "exec_cmd.c".

Since commit f66450ae9 ("cygwin: Remove the Win32 l/stat() implementation",
2013-06-22), the cygwin build has not used the WIN32 API/header files.
This means that the '-isystem /usr/include/w32api' option to sparse is
no longer necessary (to allow sparse to find the WIN32 header files).
In addition, the '-Wno-one-bit-signed-bitfield' option can be removed,
since the warning suppressed by that option was only provoked by a WIN32
header file.

Keep a copy of the `packed-refs` file contents in memory for as long
as a `packed_ref_cache` object is in use:
* If the system allows it, keep the `packed-refs` file mmapped.
* If not (either because the system doesn't support `mmap()` at all,
or because a file that is currently mmapped cannot be replaced via
`rename()`), then make a copy of the file's contents in
heap-allocated space, and keep that around instead.
We base the choice of behavior on a new build-time switch,
`MMAP_PREVENTS_DELETE`. By default, this switch is set for Windows
variants.
After this commit, `MMAP_NONE` and `MMAP_TEMPORARY` are still handled
identically. But the next commit will introduce a difference.
This whole change is still pointless, because we only read the
`packed-refs` file contents immediately after instantiating the
`packed_ref_cache`. But that will soon change.

On Cygwin, similar to Windows, "git push //server/share/repository"
ought to mean a repository on a network share that can be accessed
locally, but this did not work correctly due to stripping the double
slashes at the beginning.
This may need to be heavily tested before it gets unleashed to the
wild, as the change is at a fairly low-level code and would affect
not just the code to decide if the push destination is local. There
may be unexpected fallouts in the path normalization.

cygwin can use an UNC path like //server/share/repo
$ cd //server/share/dir
$ mkdir test

$ git init --bare
However, when we try to push from a local Git repository to this repo,
there is a problem: Git converts the leading "//" into a single "/".
As cygwin handles an UNC path so well, Git can support them better:
- Introduce cygwin_offset_1st_component() which keeps the leading "//",
similar to what Git for Windows does.
- Move CYGWIN out of the POSIX in the tests for path normalization in t0060

We often try to open a file for reading whose existence is
optional, and silently ignore errors from open/fopen; report such
errors if they are not due to missing files.

git_fopen: fix a sparse 'not declared' warning
Amend my change earlier in this series ("grep: add support for the
PCRE v1 JIT API", 2017-04-11) to un-break the build on PCRE v1
versions later than 8.31 compiled without --enable-jit.
As explained in that change and a later compatibility change in this
series ("grep: un-break building with PCRE < 8.32", 2017-05-10) the
pcre_jit_exec() function is a faster path to execute the JIT.
Unfortunately there's no compatibility stub for that function compiled
into the library if pcre_config(PCRE_CONFIG_JIT, &ret) would return 0,
and no macro that can be used to check for it, so the only portable
option to support builds without --enable-jit is via a new
NO_LIBPCRE1_JIT=UnfortunatelyYes Makefile option[1].
Another option would be to make the JIT opt-in via
USE_LIBPCRE1_JIT=YesPlease, after all it's not a default option of
PCRE v1.
I think it makes more sense to make it opt-out since even though it's
not a default option, most packagers of PCRE seem to turn it on by
default, with the notable exception of the MinGW package.
Make the MinGW platform work by default by changing the build defaults
to turn on NO_LIBPCRE1_JIT=UnfortunatelyYes. It is the only platform
that turns on USE_LIBPCRE=YesPlease by default, see commit
df5218b4c3 ("config.mak.uname: support MSys2", 2016-01-13) for that
change.

This variable is added [1] with the assumption that on a sane system,
fopen(<dir>, "r") should return NULL. Linux and FreeBSD do not meet this
expectation while at least Windows and AIX do. Let's make sure they
behave the same way.
I only tested one version on Linux (4.7.0 with glibc 2.22) and
FreeBSD (11.0) but since GNU/kFreeBSD is fbsd kernel with gnu userspace,
I'm pretty sure it shares the same problem.

Set the NO_REGEX=NeedsStartEnd Makefile flag by default on AIX.
Since commit 2f8952250a ("regex: add regexec_buf() that can work on a
non NUL-terminated string", 2016-09-21) git has errored out at
compile-time if the regular expression library doesn't support
REG_STARTEND.
While looking through Google search results for the use of NO_REGEX I
found a Chef recipe that set this on AIX[1], looking through the
documentation for the latest version of AIX (7.2, released October
2015) shows that its regexec() doesn't have REG_STARTEND.
