existed. This commit fixes it up.

Back when the class was written, for the packaging code, it made sense

and that the vast majority of uses are with find_executables=False, it
makes more sense for that to be the default.

moz.configure only sets the color flags value for the target compiler.
If the host compiler is a different version and doesn't support color
flags, we may pass unrecognized command line options.

Until we have better distinction between host and target compilers
throughout the build system, just disable automatic color flags for
host invocations. We don't have too many host binaries, so this should
have negligible impact.

Gregory Szorc 4732e7cb34 Bug 1171610 - Automatically enable color in compiler output; r=glandium
GCC and Clang will colorize compiler output automatically if stdout is a
TTY. Unfortunately, when the build backend is invoked via `mach`,
stdout is not a TTY.

6e9a4c0b9cd8 (bug 1315785) changed mach so it exports an environment
variable indicating whether mach's original stdout is a TTY. This was
later used to add color flags to `cargo` invocations.

Building on that work, this patch adds color flags to compiler
invocations if the compiler supports color and a mach TTY is
detected. The result is that compiler output from `mach build`
will be colorized automatically if Clang or a modern version of
GCC is used.

The only issue I see with this is that Clang doesn't "unset" its color
sequences when printing a newline. As a result, mach's time line
prefixing can sometimes inherit "bold" or other stylings. AFAICT this is
only a minor cosmetic concern. GCC does not exhibit this issue.

Gregory Szorc 389dbcf95f Bug 1315785 - Invoke cargo with --color=always when original stdout is a TTY; r=glandium
Combined with the previous patch that sets MACH_STDOUT_ISATTY, the
practical effect of this patch is that cargo is invoked with
`--color=always` when mach was attached to a TTY and colorized output
is sent to the terminal.

Note: this doesn't work with Rust/Cargo 1.10 for reasons unknown to me.
It appears there was a bug with Rust/Cargo because `--color=never` still
sent colorized output on that version! Cargo/Rust 1.12.1 works fine.

Nathan Froyd e818915fae Bug 1304815 - rearrange Rust crate structure for newer Rust releases; r=ted.mielczarek
In our current Rust world, we have the following dependency structure:

  xul.so --------------------------+
                                   |
  xul-gtest.so -+--> xul.a --------+-> gkrust
                |
                +--> gkrust-gtest

This structure results in link errors with multiply-defined symbols
between gkrust-gtest and gkrust with newer Rust releases when linking
xul-gtest.so. So we have to do something different.

Our new structure is:

  xul.so --------------------------+
                                   |
  xul-gtest.so -+--> xul.a --------+-> gkrust --+-> gkrust-shared
                | |
                +--> gkrust-gtest --------------+

and we enforce that a given shared library can only have at most one
Rust library that it depends on. Said Rust library is assumed to
include all significant Rust dependencies of the dependent static
libraries as well. (In the above structure, gkrust is simply a wrapper
around gkrust-shared, so gkrust-gtest doesn't have to include gkrust as
a dependency.)

Currently make check loops over all directories and runs each test file in PYTHON_UNIT_TESTS
individually. This patch instead creates a single top-level check target that runs
|mach python-tests|. This should make automation more similar to running locally, be a bit
quicker and make it easier to pull python tests out of make check completely at a future date.

Nathan Froyd f7fb6722a6 Bug 1231764 - part 6 - build rust code via cargo; r=chmanchester
This patch is really two separate changes.

The first change is that rust crates are large, standalone entities that
may contain multitudes of source files. It therefore doesn't make sense
to keep them in SOURCES, as we have been doing. Moving to use cargo
will require a higher-level approach, which suggests that we need a
different, higher-level representation for Rust sources in the build
system.

The representation here is to have the build system refer to things
defined in Cargo.toml files as the entities dealt with in the build
system, and let Cargo deal with the details of actually building things.
This approach means that adding a new crate to an existing library just
requires editing Rust and Cargo.toml files, rather than dealing with
moz.build, which seems more natural to Rust programmers. By having the
source files for libraries (and binaries in subsequent iterations of
this support) checked in to the tree, we can also take advantage of
Cargo.lock files.

The second is that we switch the core build system over to building via
cargo, rather than invoking rustc directly.

We also clean up a number of leftover things from the Old Way of doing
things. A number of tests are added to confirm that we'll only permit
crates to be built that have dependencies in-tree.

Through an oversight, we listed librul.a twice when linking libxul: once
as part of the "objects" we were linking, and once as a static library.
This duplication is unnecessary and would cause problems later when we
try to generate librul.a via cargo, as cargo will put it someplace
different from where we expect and the two names will conflict. Let's
have rules.mk be the single source of truth for how librul.a is named,
and then the code to link libxul can simply refer to that name.

Per froydnj in bug 1186064 comment #23, "it makes sense to proceed with removing
MSVC 2013 support." This commit does that.

We also go a step further and require VS2015 Update 2 instead of just
update 1. This temporarily brings us down to just 1 officially supported
Visual Studio version. However, VS2015u3 was just released and is
unofficially supported.

David Keeler 3fed4e5ecc bug 1272858 - use a name-agnostic method to find the built-in root PKCS#11 slot r=Cykesiopka
Previously this implementation would use the expected names of the built-in
module and slot to get a handle on them. This doesn't work on distributions that
use other names. The new implementation searches through the slots from the
default module list for one where PK11_HasRootCerts returns true (which
indicates that NSS considers that slot to contain the default built-in root
list).

Mike Hommey 8a3b88f341 Bug 1278415 - Also write a mozinfo for js standalone builds. r=gps
Historically, a mozinfo for js standalone build has not been necessary,
but with the move towards a) having things work with mach and b)
buildconfig using the MozbuildObject.from_environment in next patch,
mozinfo becomes necessary (it's required for
MozbuildObject.from_environment to find the directory is an objdir).

Interestingly, hazard builds do both a js standalone build and a desktop
Firefox build at the same time, both of which are done with MOZCONFIG
set in the environment... with the Firefox mozconfig. The result of now
writing a mozinfo for js standalone builds is that in that case, they
end up with a reference to the mozconfig, which the build system then
reads, and finds a MOZ_OBJDIR, which then doesn't match the js
standalone build objdir. So for those builds, reset MOZCONFIG.

Mike Hommey cae8c6bcee Bug 1264534 - Create system wrappers for all declared STL headers. r=froydnj
Until now, we had some STL headers listed in the system-headers list
such that they would get a system wrapper, but not all of them.

On the other hand, the STL wrappers do the same job as the system
wrappers (applying default visibility), on top of their own, so the
presence of the STL headers in system-headers wasn't making much of a
difference.

Except we have places in the tree where we can't build with STL wrappers
for a number of reasons. And in that case, we *do* need system wrappers
for the STL headers, but we didn't have system wrappers for all of them.

So instead of relying on the STL headers being listed both in
system-headers and stl-headers, concatenate both lists to create the
system wrappers.

Mike Hommey aadf5fb0df Bug 1278456 - Bump libstdc++ requirement to 3.4.16 (4.6.1). r=froydnj
Similarly to the considerations about glibc, the Linux compatibility matrix
(https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/Firefox/Linux_compatibility_matrix)
tells us no distro with Gtk+3 3.4 has a version of libstdc++ older than
4.6.

The data in the matrix doesn't go to that level of detail, but Ubuntu
12.04 LTS, being the only one with version 4.6 (others have at least
4.7), it's worth noting it has version 4.6.3. Which means we can safely
require libstdc++ symbols version 3.4.16 (which were added in 4.6.1).

This will allow us to remove a lot of the stdc++ compatibility hacks.

Mike Hommey a898d16968 Bug 1278456 - Bump glibc requirement to 2.12. r=froydnj
The requirement for glibc has been set to version 2.7 for a long while.

Spidermonkey uses the pthread_setname_np symbol, which is only available
since glibc 2.12. So far, we've been fortunate that the symbol doesn't
end up in libxul, or tests that link to js directly, because the symbol
is eliminated as being called by effectively dead code.

There are multiple reasons why this is going to change, one of which
being changes to the way things are linked, that will make the linker
not eliminate that code in some cases. Another is that eventually, the
separation of build systems between js and top-level is going to fade,
and the glibc checks, which apply to all gecko binaries, will also apply
to js binaries. They currently are not happening, and would fail because
of pthread_setname_np if they were.

Taking a step back, as of version 46, the mozilla.org builds require at
least Gtk+3 3.4. Which means the requirements for the underlying system
have received a dramatic bump, and it's time to revisit the requirements
for binary compatibility.

I went through all my notes from all the recent times binary compatibility
has been considered, and put together a compatibility matrix on MDN from
that data as well as more recent data that I could find here and there,
about the major non-rolling-release distros (RHEL, Fedora, SuSE, Debian,
Ubuntu)
https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/Firefox/Linux_compatibility_matrix

Considering the data there, none of the distros that have at least Gtk+3
3.4 have a glibc older than 2.13. The list of symbols that 2.13 provides
that 2.12 doesn't have is not large enough, though, to really care about
depending on 2.13.

The intent in bug 1271829 was to make all the XCFLAGS set in

other. Unfortunately, there is also an AC_SUBST variable named XCFLAGS,

Using a different local variable allows to still accumulate the values,
while keeping away from the XCFLAGS from autoconf.mk.

Mike Hommey 8855262939 Bug 1269171 - Change how mozalloc.h is hooked in STL wrappers. r=froydnj
Since the introduction of the STL wrappers, they have included
mozalloc.h, and multiple times, we've hit header reentrancy problems,
and worked around them as best as we could.

Taking a step back, all mozalloc.h does is:
- declare moz_* allocator functions.
- define inline implementations of various operator new/delete variants.

The first only requires the functions to be declared before they are used,
so mozalloc.h only needs to be included before anything that would use
those functions.

The second doesn't actually require a specific order, as long as the
declaration for those functions comes before their use, and they are
either declared in <new> or implicitly by the C++ compiler.

So all in all, it doesn't matter that mozalloc.h is included before the
wrapped STL headers. What matters is that it's included when STL headers
are included. So arrange things such that mozalloc.h is included after
the first wrapped STL header is fully preprocessed (and all its includes
have been included).

Mike Hommey 60564d7bff Bug 1269171 - Backout ccff1c4580ab (bug 1270832) because it doesn't actually work properly and blocks upcoming changes. r=froydnj
It turns out that, since we're including <new> before setting
_GLIBCXX_DEBUG, the debug parts of c++config.h are not activated, and
that has an impact of how much of the debug features of the STL are
activated.

In contrast, the upcoming changes to the STL wrappers are avoiding the
include of <new> before _GLIBCXX_DEBUG is set, which in turn breaks the
build because, as we link things that use STL wrappers with things that
don't, they end up with a different state of STL debugging, and have
mismatching symbols.

Firefox 49 dropped support for non-SSE2 platforms, so propagate

previous ones.

Nathan Froyd 82c6f5d7a7 Bug 1163224 - add build system support for multiple Rust crates; r=glandium
Our current build system support for Rust compiles any Rust crate into a
so-called staticlib, which is a static library (.a file) that includes
the Rust runtime. That staticlib is then linked into libxul. For
supporting multiple crates, this approach breaks down, as linking
multiple copies of the Rust runtime is going to fail.

For supporting multiple crates, the approach taken here is to compile
each crate into a so-called rlib, which is essentially a staticlib
without the Rust runtime linked in. The build system takes note of
every crate destined for linking with libxul (treating them like static
libraries generated from C/C++ files), and generates a super-crate,
whimsically named "rul", that is compiled as a staticlib (so as to
include the Rust runtime) and then linked into libxul. Thus only one
copy of the Rust runtime is included, and the Rust compiler can take
care of any inter-crate dependencies.

This patch currently only supports Rust code in shared libraries, not in
binaries.

Nathan Froyd 45af5cd66c Bug 1163224 - add build system support for multiple Rust crates; r=glandium

This patch currently only supports Rust code in shared libraries, not in
binaries. The handling for the rul crate is placed in the common
backend, with a special hook for derived backends to handle shared
library objects.

Gregory Szorc 8bec49cc68 Bug 1262569 - Do not print individual source targets being built; r=ted
Multiple people have complained that the build output of printing the
source files being built adds little value. I agree. The extra output
doesn't give really helpful progress info because sources can be built
in non-deterministic order. Furthermore, the extra output hides useful
output like compiler warnings.

This patch makes the default build system output even less verbose. We
no longer print the individual source targets when they are built. We do
still print the targets for binaries, so some sense of progress can be
inferred.

If people like verbosity, they can export the undocumented
BUILD_VERBOSE_LOG environment variable can be set to restore the old
behavior.

Ted Mielczarek 58e2e722d0 bug 1239083 - use moz.build files to build ICU. r=glandium, waldo
Also fixes bug 926980 - load ICU data from an archive file.

Stop invoking ICU's autoconf build system. Instead, have hand-authored
moz.build files under config/external/icu to build what we need. In addition,
we'll commit a pre-built copy of the ICU data file (currently icudt56l.dat)
under config/external/icu/data to avoid having to build ICU host tools to
generate it. config/external/icu/data also contains some assembly files
which can generate an object file containing the ICU data file contents
so that the JS shell (or standalone JS builds) can be linked directly to
the data without having to deal with the external data file. This requires
yasm or GNU as.

Various bits of packaging have been updated to account for the ICU data file.
XPCOM initialization now sets the ICU data directory so ICU can locate its
data file.

The update-icu.sh script has been modified to read the list of C/C++ source
files out of the ICU Makefiles and update `sources.mozbuild` files under
config/external/icu, as well as build a local copy of ICU using its
autoconf build system to generate the ICU data file to be committed in-tree.

that builds are parallelized, its meaningfulness is diminished.

David Keeler 2f0004e1be bug 1228175 - fix IsCertBuiltInRoot r=Cykesiopka,mgoodwin
When a built-in root certificate has its trust changed from the default value,
the platform has to essentially create a copy of it in the read/write
certificate database with the new trust settings. At that point, the desired
behavior is that the platform still considers that certificate a built-in root.
Before this patch, this would indeed happen for the duration of that run of the
platform, but as soon as it restarted, the certificate in question would only
appear to be from the read/write database, and thus was not considered a
built-in root. This patch changes the test of built-in-ness to explicitly
search the built-in certificate slot for the certificate in question. If found,
it is considered a built-in root.

Mike Hommey 0995f72a3a Bug 1245076 - Don't include mozalloc.h from the cstdlib wrapper. r=froydnj
Our STL wrappers do various different things, one of which is including
mozalloc.h for infallible operator new. mozalloc.h includes stdlib.h,
which, in libstdc++ >= 6 is now itself a wrapper around cstdlib, which
circles back to our STL wrapper.

But of the things our STL wrappers do, including mozalloc.h is not one
that is necessary for cstdlib. So skip including mozalloc.h in our
cstdlib wrapper.

Additionally, some C++ sources (in media/mtransport) are including
headers in an extern "C" block, which end up including stdlib.h, which
ends up including cstdlib because really, this is all C++, and our
wrapper pre-includes <new> for mozalloc.h, which fails because templates
don't work inside extern "C". So, don't pre-include <new> when we're not
including mozalloc.h.

Python's unittest separates errors and failures, where the former is
uncaught exceptions and the latter uncaught assertions. We were only
printing the former, making the mozunit runner output useless to debug
failures due to assertions in the code being tested.

I would usually edit the test to temporarily switch to unittest.main().
Enough is enough, handle failures properly.

At the same time, instead of printing all the errors one after the other
at the end, print them right after the TEST-UNEXPECTED-FAIL message.

Mike Hommey a2d014b606 Bug 1245422 - Remove MOZ_OPTIMIZE_FLAGS override when building with DMD enabled on Windows. r=mshal
-Zi is already set through MOZ_DEBUG_FLAGS, which is set from
--enable-debug-symbols, which is the default, and if someone goes all
the way to explicitly disable them, we might as well not silently
override their decision.

-Od disables optimization, and the given reason was for sane stack
traces, but the fact is we're currently building debug builds, which
have been optimized by default for a while, and are the only ones with
DMD enabled by default, without overriding with -Od and are apparently
happy with it.

Mike Hommey ba138b2936 Bug 1245422 - Remove the -FR C*FLAGS on Windows builds. r=mshal
The flag is used to create .sbr files, which bscmake subsequently uses to
create .bsc files. These files and related tools are, aiui, the ancestors
of Intellisense.

The -FR C*FLAGS are added to the build if MOZ_BROWSE_INFO or MOZ_BSCFILE
are set in the recursive make backend. While the former has an AC_SUBST,
the latter does not, so in practice, only the former can be set by
supported methods, and would need to be set in a mozconfig. At that
rate, people who do want those flags can add them in the C*FLAGS on
their own.

Developers are probably better served by the VisualStudio backend
anyways.

Mike Hommey 5abcde418d Bug 1245013 - Move CMFLAGS/CMMFLAGS from config.mk to configure. r=mshal
We don't really care to set those in js/src/configure because the JS
engine doesn't use ObjC. We also don't care to preserve the += behavior
because there were no AC_SUBST in the first place, so it's unlikely
anyone has an override in their mozconfig and expects it to work.

Mike Hommey efa26893a5 Bug 1242074 - Avoid going back and forth between FasterMake and RecursiveMake; r=gps
FasterMake needs some RecursiveMake install manifests to have been
processed before doing its work, so we can actually end up processing
them twice because of the going back and forth from FasterMake in the

Gregory Szorc b9191564fc Bug 1242074 - Reorder pattern rules to placate GNU Make 3.81; r=glandium
Recent changes in bug 1239217 added the faster backend to the default
build mechanism for artifact builds. This seems to have uncovered a
difference in behavior between GNU Make 3.81 and newer. Starting with
GNU Make 3.82, pattern rules are selected according to shortest stem.
Before, they are used in definition order.

So, we change the order of the pattern rules so the longest prefixes are
first. This should result in the same behavior on various GNU Make
implementations.

Mike Hommey 6098e02a36 Bug 1239217 - Add the FasterMake+RecursiveMake hybrid backend. r=gps 2016-01-22 15:43:26 +09:00
Mike Hommey e50a6cfd7b Bug 1239217 - Make the RecursiveMake build system create backend files generically. r=gps
The current rule is only for "backend.RecursiveMakeBackend", but, with
the current default of generating both the RecursiveMake and FasterMake
backends, the command creates/refreshes both backends. This is, in fact,
how the FasterMake backend is refreshed in most cases.

Moreover, with an hybrid backends, the generated file is not
"backend.RecursiveMakeBackend" anymore, so we need a more generic way to
handle this.

Furthermore, it's not necessarily desirable for all backends to have a
dependency file to handle the dependencies to refresh the backend, so
generate a plain list instead. This has the side effect of making `mach
build-backend --diff` more readable for changes to that file.

Finally, make the backend.* files created like any other backend file,
such that its diff appears in the `mach build-backend --diff` output.

Mike Hommey f549721406 Bug 1239217 - Stop making the FasterMake build system refresh the backend on its own. r=gps
The FasterMake build system is meant to be invoked through `mach build
faster`, which does it already, or, in the near future, as part of an
hybrid build system, which will deal with it as well. People doing
`make -C objdir/faster` won't have the backend automatically refreshed,
but that's not a supported way to use it anyways.

Mike Hommey 5624c77753 Bug 1241416 - Create a tier for things happening before export. r=gps
While it would be possible to move those things in the export tier, it
is still interesting to have reporting for them separately, especially
considering I expect things to gradually move from the other tiers to
this new one.

While not entirely obvious, the recurse_pre-export target doesn't imply
actual recursion as long as the RecursiveMake backend doesn't emit
traversal information for it, so nothing will actually happen on this
target, but the interesting part is that it runs, per the generic
config/recurse.mk rules for tiers, between BUILDSTATUS TIER_START and
BUILDSTATUS TIER_FINISH, so that all its dependencies are accounted
as being part of the pre-export tier.

Mike Hommey 92596da030 Bug 1240657 - Fix FasterMake race condition leading to missing "manifest interfaces.manifest" entries. r=gps
Turns out the claim in bug 1234439 that the FasterMake backend knows
about all the chrome manifest entries is wrong, and there's still one
that is added "manually" with buildlist.py, and during mach build
faster, that can happen before or after the corresponding chrome
manifests are written out by install manifest processing.

While the real fix here would be to make the build system totally
aware of those "manifest interfaces.manifest" entries, for now, it's
simpler to add dependencies to work around the race condition.

Currently, one needs to define DEFFILE or LD_VERSION_SCRIPT appropriately,

awkward aggregations.

Currently, only css files added through jar manifests are treated this way.
There is really no reason for the discrepancy, but there are actually no css
files added directly through moz.build, so this was never a problem.

On the other hand, it makes things simpler in a world where jar manifests are
treated as if they were entirely described in moz.build (which is where the
FasterMake backend is heading).

Using TEST_DIRS is nothing more than a shortcut for

if CONFIG['ENABLE_TESTS']:
    DIRS += [...]

As such, we might as well remove it being a separate variable, and use some
Context magic to just fill DIRS when ENABLE_TESTS is set.

The security/manager/ssl/tests/unit/moz.build change ensures that the order
of DIRS before the change is kept, not because it matters, but because it
allows to confirm that nothing else is modified by this change.

Mike Hommey 2eabcb84c2 Bug 1234439 - Use new install manifests feature for chrome manifests in the FasterMake backend. r=gps
Bug 1191230 added override lines with # characters to chrome manifests
for Windows.

So far, chrome manifests were handled with buildlist.py like in the
RecursiveMake backend, fed with Make variables. Without proper quoting,
those Make variables are just truncated by Make on the first # character,
and this results in mach build faster failing because of that.

However, the reason why chrome manifests were handled with buildlist.py
originally is that not all chrome manifest entries were known to the
FasterMake backend, but they now all are.

So instead of relying on Make variables and buildlist.py, we can now
rely on the newly added install manifests feature allowing to create files
with a given content.

We have many unit tests in the tree for some small parts of the build system
pipeline, but we don't have anything that resembles an end to end test, and we
kind of rely on the resulting Firefox not being broken by our changes.

With the Faster make backend growing, I want to ensure it produces the same
thing as the recursive make backend, at least for the parts it supports.

This adds some kind of test that allows to check that.

Ted Mielczarek 879065de9d bug 1223530 - Move MOZ_WINCONSOLE to configure. r=glandium
This patch moves the logic for selecting MOZ_WINCONSOLE out of individual
Makefile.in files and into configure. It also changes config.mk to only
pass -SUBSYSTEM:CONSOLE if MOZ_WINCONSOLE=1. The MSDN docs state that
in the absence of -SUBSYSTEM, the linker will select the proper subsystem
based on whether the program contains [w]main or [w]WinMain, so let it
do that.

One program (windbgdlg) needed a tweak to add a wmain for when MOZ_WINCONSOLE
is defined.

This patch leaves one instance in security/sandbox/win/wow_helper/Makefile.in,
that Makefile has its own separate bug.

Bug 206029 was working around the Flash player installer modifying Firefox's

Nick Alexander c8ee8a09cf Bug 1108782 - Part 1: straighten out Java classpaths. r=glandium
This commit is us getting out of our own way. We were specifying
-classpath twice, once in $(JAVAC) and once in java-build.mk. Only
the latter of these is active. This a problem for ANDROID_EXTRA_JARS
-- those JARs should be on the classpath and input to $(DX) -- and
JARs that should be on the classpath but *not* input to $(DX). This
commit removes the global flags to $(JAVAC) and adds
JAVA_{BOOT}CLASSPATH_JARS. This required some hijinkery moving
wildcards to moz.build files, but everything seems to work.

As well as clarifying some parts of the build, part 2 uses this work
to modify the classpath.

Jakob Olesen abc917a355 Bug 1205081 - Imprecise results from check_vanilla_allocations.py. r=njn
Use |nm -A| instead of |nm -l| to avoid depending on imprecise debug
information in optimized builds. (And to get the 100x faster
performance.)

Fix a problem with the filename regex so we can also detect symbol
references in from source files with a hyphen in their name.

When bad allocation references are detected, display results from |nm -l|
so we still get the useful line number information.

Nick Alexander 543a450286 Bug 1195388 - Part 1: Make ANDROID_APK_{NAME,PACKAGE} moz.build variables. r=gps
This paves the way for defining additional Android packages in
moz.build, which is a step toward moving the special
mobile/android/base/Makefile.in aapt invocations into the generic
java-build.mk framework.

The new variables are both passthru variables for now: in the future,
we'll roll them into some aggregate Android APK definition.

It's worth noting that references to the variables in Makefile.in
files are only defined after including rules.mk (and thereby
backend.mk). This only required a few changes in the tree but it
confused me for some time.

Nathan Froyd cc763887fa Bug 1186444 - part 1 - move uses of MODULE_OPTIMIZE_FLAGS to moz.build's CFLAGS; r=mshal
Now that we have moz.build, we can be guaranteed that any flags we add
in moz.build will be added after everything else has been setup. So any
uses of MODULE_OPTIMIZE_FLAGS can be moved to moz.build's
CFLAGS/CXXFLAGS without any unusual repercussions. We do have to verify
that MOZ_OPTIMIZE is in effect, though.

Nick Alexander 61a6ae674e Bug 1160563 - Part 2: Make ANDROID_ASSETS_DIRS a moz.build variable. r=gps
We have had singular ANDROID_ASSETS_DIR in Makefile.in for a while.
Fennec itself does not use the existing Makefile.in Android code, for
complicated historical reasons.

This makes the existing variable moz.build-only; generalizes the
existing variable to an ordered list; and adds the equivalent use of
the new list to the Fennec build, with a simple example asset.

This patch also updates the packager to include assets packed into the
gecko.ap_. Without the packager change, the assets/ directory in the
ap_ gets left out of the final apk. This whole approach is totally
non-standard but is more or less required to support our single-locale
repack scheme.

Ralph Giles 2ea918802d Bug 1161339 - Add rust support to moz.build. r=ted
Add .rs as a recognized file extension in SOURCES.

Propagate that through to the Makefile backend and add a dependency
generated and an explicit rule to call $(RUSTC) to compile them.

rustc builds static libraries, not obj files. At least, if one
asks it to output an obj file, I'm not clear how to get all the
compiler-specific runtime libraries the code will expect to link
to. Therefore we generate a static library for each rust source
file (which must be a complete crate for the time being) and link
that. Because of the extension it ends up on the LIBS line in the
the corresponding .desc file.

Note that the static library does still depend on some system
libraries, e.g. -ldl -lpthread -lm on linux. Gecko already
links to all of those, so we don't keep track of it here.

Should we need to add explicit linkage for other targets,
rustc does print a list to stderr which can be parsed.

Without this, invoking Make in a sub-directory will fail with an error
that libs:: cannot find target `target'.

Without this patch, the Fennec Gradle and IDE build integration fails
compiling its custom targets in mobile/android/base and
mobile/android/base/locales.

Gregory Szorc 6d01f694ab Bug 1132771 - Support and test for reading without a config object; r=glandium
We want the ability to read data from any moz.build file without needing
a full build configuration (running configure). This will enable tools
to consume metadata by merely having a copy of the source code and
nothing more.

This commit creates the EmptyConfig object. It is a config object that -
as its name implies - is empty. It will be used for reading moz.build
files in "no config" mode.

Many moz.build files make assumptions that variables in CONFIG are
defined and that they are strings. We create the EmptyValue type that
behaves like an empty unicode string. Since moz.build files also do some
type checking, we carve an exemption for EmptyValue, just like we do for
None.

We add a test to verify that reading moz.build files in "no config" mode
works. This required some minor changes to existing moz.build files to
make them work in the new execution mode.

moz.build files should execute in filesystem traversal mode. Add a test
that verifies this is true.

This test performs a brute force filesystem scan to find relevant
moz.build files. This can be a little slow. That's unfortunate. But it's
a price we need to pay in order to ensure metadata extraction mode
continues to work.

Mike Hommey bdc97c1dad Fixup for bug 1114669 on a CLOSED TREE. r=gps
xpt files don't have a dependency on backend files to avoid rebuilding all
of them when adding or removing new files. On incremental builds, some kind
of dependencies are required to ensure the xpt files are refreshed when
adding or removing new idls.
2015-02-13 11:15:15 +09:00
Mike Hommey 2dc29d7492 Bug 1114669 - Use a generated list of idl deps for xpt generation. r=gps
Generating the list of idl deps to generate an xpt from its dependency list
makes us give all _previous_ dependencies, inherited from the .deps makefiles.
This leads to removed files being listed on xpidl-process.py command line, and
the command subsequently failing.

Instead, use generated lists of idl dependencies. At the same time, lighten the
generated Makefile further by not emitting xpt dependencies on their containing
directory, and instead generating it from the $xpt_files list.

This brings down the Makefile size from 100k to 38k.

Joshua Cranmer 605ddffb0b Bug 1099430, part 二: Define WIN_TOP_SRC using MOZILLA_DIR, r=glandium.
win_srcdir is used as the Windows path for the srcdir, and so it needs to use
comm-central's topsrcdir to work properly. In contrast, WIN_TOP_SRC is really
only used to define BUILD_TOOLS, which refers to files in mozilla-central/build,
and so that can and should remain the mozilla-central topsrcdir.

Joshua Cranmer 358bd037da Bug 1099430, part 一: Define MOZILLA_DIR early in the base makefiles, r=glandium.
This change allows us to use use MOZILLA_DIR even for changes in config.mk. The
corollary is that comm-central needs to define MOZILLA_DIR before calling into
baseconfig.mk, which it already does.

The change to the test Makefile is needed since it decides to skip including
config.mk, and hence baseconfig.mk, where it would need to grab the MOZILLA_DIR
declaration.

Mike Hommey 47c853314f Bug 1077148 part 4 - Add and use new moz.build templates for Gecko programs and libraries. r=gps
There are, sadly, many combinations of linkage in use throughout the tree.
The main differentiator, though, is between program/libraries related to
Gecko or not. Kind of. Some need mozglue, some don't. Some need dependent
linkage, some standalone.

Anyways, these new templates remove the need to manually define the
right dependencies against xpcomglue, nspr, mozalloc and mozglue
in most cases.

Places that build programs and were resetting MOZ_GLUE_PROGRAM_LDFLAGS
or that build libraries and were resetting MOZ_GLUE_LDFLAGS can now
just not use those Gecko-specific templates.

Since essentially everything is linked to libmozglue and libmozglue takes
precedence in symbol resolution in our dynamic linker, there is no need
to wrap most symbols. PR_GetEnv/PR_SetEnv still needs wrapping because
there's no other way to actually wrap the calls from NSPR itself and NSS,
as well as the symbols wrapped because our dynamic linker can't find them
in system libraries on some devices because they're weak.

Mike Hommey 75a8d98fa3 Bug 1077228 - Include the right autoconf.mk in GLOBAL_DEPS. r=mshal
Ever since bug 969164, the js build system, when building gecko (not when
building standalone) uses a autoconf-js.mk file for its config.

One of the suboptimal ways we have to retrigger builds when the build
configuration changes (changes to e.g. configure.in can do that) is to
make most things depend on autoconf.mk. Which unfortunately doesn't
account for the fact the js/src subdirectory uses a different file.

In practice, this means that some classes of changes to the js build
system, not accompanied with toplevel build system changes may no
trigger the corresponding rebuilds in the js subtree on incremental
builds.

Mike Hommey 8c10235da0 Bug 1077151 - Always use expandlibs descriptors when they exist. r=mshal
Currently, when there is both an expandlibs descriptor and an actual static
library, expandlibs picks the static library. This has the side effect that
if there are object files in the static library that aren't directly used,
they're dropped when linking, even when they export symbols that would be
exported in the final linked binary.

In most cases in the code base, files are not dropped that way. The most
notable counter-example is xpcomglue, where actually not dropping files
leads to link failure because of missing symbols those files reference
(yes, that would tend to say the glue is broken in some way).

On the opposite side, there is mozglue, which does have both a descriptor
and a static library (the latter being necessary for the SDK), and that
linking as a static library drops files that shouldn't be dropped (like
jemalloc). We're currently relying on -Wl,--whole-archive for those files
not to be dropped, but that won't really be possible without much hassle
in a world where mozglue dependencies live in moz.build land.

Switching expandlibs to use descriptors when they exist, even when there
is a static library (so, the opposite of the current behavior) allows to
drop -Wl,--whole-archive and prepare for a better future. However, as
mentioned, xpcomglue does still require to be linked through the static
library, so we need to make it a static library only.

To achieve that, we make NO_EXPAND_LIBS now actually mean no expandlibs
and use that to build the various different xpcomglues.

Mike Hommey 203b345279 Bug 1059255 - Stop building stdc++compat as a real library. r=mshal
Incidentally, this makes the build fail because stdc++compat.o then appears
twice on the libxul linkage command line. This, in turn, is because
widget/xremoteclient creates both a program and an intermediate library for
libxul. The Program() template adds stdc++compat to the directory data,
which ends up being added to libxul as well. The same kind of issue arises
when linking the gtest-enabled libxul.

While eventually we'll be able to avoid those problems, it's not the case
yet, so work around the issue by making expand-libs skip .desc files that
appear multiple times.

OS_LIBS for libraries that are not part of the gecko tree, EXTRA_LIBS for
libraries, such as NSPR, that are in the tree, but are not handled by
moz.build just yet. Those EXTRA_LIBS may also come from a system library.
However, in cases where the expanded variables are always empty for the
in-tree case, OS_LIBS is used (as for, e.g. MOZ_ZLIB_LIBS). OS_LDFLAGS is
used exclusively for non-library linker flags.

Always pass EXTRA_LIBS before OS_LIBS on linker command lines.

Forbid EXTRA_DSO_LDOPTS, SHARED_LIBRARY_LIBS and LIBS in Makefiles.

These headers were added with the initial support for hidden visibility
in bug 273336. At that time this code probably lived in libxpcom and needed to
be callable outside of that, but that's not true anymore. At this point not
linking this code into libxul seems like madness, so we
might as well stop calling them system headers so we stop exporting them
from libxul.

Nick Alexander 73597cec4f Bug 979388 - Make aapt invocation rebuild R.java. r=glandium
This commit adds an empty recipe to dependencies of .aapt.deps, which
forces the appropriate gecko-R.jar rebuild. This is because Make treats
targets with no recipe at all differently than targets with an empty
recipe, in a way that defeats our dependencies.

What appeared to be happening is the following:

Touch a resource. On the next build, .aapt.deps is stale, so aapt is
invoked, which generates R.java, and we touch .aapt.deps.

Now R.java depends on .aapt.deps, but this does not appear to force Make
to consider targets that depend on R.java to be stale. A target that
depends on R.java (such as gecko-R.jar) itself compares timestamps and
finds that gecko-R.jar is newer than R.java (from the previous build),
and this comparison appears to happen before aapt is invoked. So even
though .aapt.deps is seen to be stale, and by transitivity R.java is
stale, this does not mark gecko-R.jar as stale. The timestamp check
between R.java and gecko-R.jar appears to happen *before* aapt is
invoked.

On the second build following the update, the R.java generated in the
previous build is newer than gecko-R.jar, triggering the observed
rebuild of gecko-R.jar.
